^ A truer word rarely spoken...
Dairy cattle produce the poorest quality leathers, the cheap stuff.. Then you move onto the bargain leathers.. Argo sofas and such like, these come from beef cattle... Then we move onto the luxury leathers.. Do you have a decent quality leather sofa? Have a look at it closely.. Can you see any scars on the hide? What are the odds of an animal bred and kept for it's meat.. Usually in barbed wire enclosures.. Achieving killing age completely scar free? These leathers tend to come from cattle bred specifically for their hides, they are usually kept 'housed' all their lives and never see grass, the food they receive is usually very basic, because they don't need the muscle bulk a beef animal does.. The meat is the by product and goes into pet foods and such like..

Then we move onto coats.. Have you got a nice leather jacket.. Is it lovely and soft? Driving gloves perhaps? Soft as you can get ?

Leather production also has its own cruelty issues. For example soft leather does not come from old cows but from calves, and the softest leather of all comes from unborn calves whose mothers have been slaughtered.

Any better than wearing fur from a non meat producing animal?

I still say I would wear fur if I could guarantee it was sourced humanely.. The thing is no-one would care if I had, they would see real fur and assume it was obtained more cruelly than their 3 for a tenner Tesco chickens...

I believe our farming and slaughterhouses could improve greatly let alone fur production...

Oh and I applaud Nigella for her take on the subject too...

I would prefer not to wear any animal products and yes fake it rather than have it killed for me to benefit.
It is not easy to buy shoes though without leather that are not trainers or that are comfortable ..... but not impossible.
As a vegetarian I am subscribing to no animal products but food producers are canny and animal products are in the most odd foods imaginable. It is not easy to avoid but then you get into the swing of the terminology used for animal products in food and life becomes easier in terms of shopping. I now just avoid packaged things and tend to stick to fresh food only. Make my own stocks and cook from scratch with non of the crappy sauce mixes that are advertised as being free of animal products.

It is a personal preference however and my view is just that ........ my view and my conscience. I would not inflict that on anyone else.
I think animals could be kept more humanely and slaughtered in more pleasant surroundings, but at the end of the day I believe most animals know when they are going to be killed and they get stressed and scared. It is not for me to benefit from this practice. I think it is disgusting but as I said it is my view and it is shared by others but there are those who love meat. So everyone to their own.

If you think its only the fur trade that is cruel,i suggest you watch a documentary called "earthlings".
It can be found on the net easily and exposes a lot more than the fur trade.

Here is a link to the whole film, worth the watch and will settle a few arguments on here i think.

got a fur lined blanket and a fur lined gown for historical re-enactment, it is great and does keep me warm. However the fur is on the inside and not on the outside for "show"

If people do not like furs, then fair enough, all the fur I use is recycled from charity shops that are now too frightened of the fluffy wuffy animal rights brigade attacking their shops, yet the same people would have no problem in having rats killed... guess some furry animals are more deserving than others ?

Veggies have a point, anyone who eats meat should not be that worried...

but can't see the point of wearing fur on the outside of a coat, that is only to pose with and badly at that :(

I would never wear fur.

I think the people who do these acts are pure evil.

However hard these programmes are to watch I think there should be much more broadcasted to highlight how horrendus the situation is, otherwise it is unlikely it will ever be stopped.
