Unless a customer is downright belligerent, you need to smile and do as they ask. If you can't do that, you have no business in customer service. I ran into two people back to back today that had NO business in customer service.

"Normally I don't purposely choose the ugliest/smallest/oldest one either because I want them to have the best food experience so they'd come back, right? "

Calling baked goods ugly makes me laugh If you dont see what the huge difference is over a tiny bit of icing, then next time I suggest just giving the lady what she asks for with a smile. In lifes grand scheme is some ladies baked goods preference really worth giving yourself a stress headache?I try to conserve my energy for the big stresses in life.I think people stay a lot happier and content this way.JMHO Kat

I am sure your employer would be interested to know that you consider a customer "rude" for choosing the items she wants! The money she spends pays your wages. Perhaps next time she will choose another bakery ...

^^^^^I think she meant "pretended to be dead". Although she might've also meant dressing up as the personification of "death" ... ya know ... black robe and all.

I'm glad I don't work in retail. If I have to deal with customers ... at least they will be the professional types, not your average joe and jane blow off the streets buying $2.00 items.

I try my best to be polite to anyone in customer service. I have worked it and I know how difficult it can be to deal with the public. Now I only have to please my patients, their families, my charge nurse, and my tummy. Strike that last one,I was thinking about a snack.

I too work serving baked goods. I have had customers become angry that you did not pick out two muffins that matched in color. ie one was a little browner then the other.

Someone said that the OP should be happy that she didn't come over the counter and scalp her.. I had to stand down a customer who cane waving threatened to come over the counter to beat my young staff. The guy was angry because he had to wait his turn for his order to come up on the screen to be filled.

When you work in the service industry people will treat you like you are dirt and what is funny is when they leave the people in line behind them will laugh and comment on what jerk they are as they are leaving.

Wow...this is amazing...I just hope that some of you that posted in here don't have bosses reading it, they wouldn't allow you back thru the doors.... ....customer service is the easiest thing in the world to do...just think about how YOU want to be treated. I mean....can you imagine the embarassment of going home and having to admit that you got let go...because you couldn't get a customer the custards she wanted???????? You have a hell of an opportunity here ....to serve your public and ALL you have to do is to get her two rolls...why not make it the absolute finest "her picking up pastries" experience of her entire life! Where she wants to come back and have YOU wait on her again! You don't know what may of happened to her that day. She may of got some horribly devastating news and these custards are going to be her final pleasures..who knows....all you have to do is to make sure that dealing with YOU, was the high point of her day!Think about it, we ARE talking about YOU!...How can anyone NOT have a pleasant experience with you??..Now, it's your job to make certain THEY all know this too! If a customer isn't talking well of you...you aint about to make any more money than what you are making now!

Older people do seem to be pickier. Maybe they have more time to worry about the small things. Maybe coming into my store and buying something is the highlight of their day.
I get paid by the hour, I'll do pretty much anything they want. I do have a little trick I use when waiting on rude customers. I tell them to fvck off in my head all the while keeping a huge smile on my face. The ruder they are the worse the thoughts in my head get. Usually makes me start laughing.
I have tried to be especially nice to the most horrible customers, sometimes they end up being my nicest customers. Just needed a little attention/interaction with someone.
Never feels good to be treated rudely. Just remember they're the ones with a problem.

Just remember, it's not about you...it's about her.
Perhaps she suffers from Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. Who knows?

forget what your boss expects from you, you are being paid to give her the danish she is paying for. you shouldnt need to be told by your boss how to give customer service correctly, if you do then you need some customer training.

as for your question would we be like that women?
me personally, i have spent many years working in customer service, and given my best to my customers since im getting paid to. now if i was to buy a custard danish or two, since i have to watch everything i eat as i put weight on just looking at cakes, if i was to buy a cake it would be a treat to myself. now i would be like a child treating myself with a cake. i would go in the store and be looking at all the cakes with a big smile on my face, slavering at the mouth like id not eaten for months, then choose the cakes that are waving at me (metaphorecaly sp?) now when i ask for those cakes, if someone even dared ruin my moment by telling me they are all the same, when to me, they are not all the same, you better hope all i am is rude.

what may look the same to you, may not look the same to the person that is buying them.

I had an experience yesterday that I think needs discussing. A customer had dropped a cake in my showcase, it fell upside down, and splattered everywhere, then they left it and walked away. If they had told me, I would have been upset, but simply smiled and said thanks for letting me know, now I can clean it up. Is there something I can offer you instead? When I found it by accident , needless to say, I was livid, as were my co-workers, even a few customers walking by or looking at things beside th mess. I guess I am wondering, when as a society, did we as customers, feel that we have the right, to treat people like this? In the last few years, I am getting accustomed to, but not liking how rude some people are being? Parents standing by while their kid says.... gimme a cookie.... and no please or thanks. Adult and children ruining things, not just my bakery items, and walking away without a word to store staff?Do they think because we are being paid to be in public service of any sort, that it is our job to clean up after them? Put your garbage away, don't leave it on the table for others, if you don't want something, don't just put it anywhere you are at the moment, it's not fun for me to walk into the grocery aise, and find one of my whipped cream items sitting on the shelf,or tucked into one of the freezers. These are usually the kind of people who treat everyone like that, everywhere they shop. As someone who sees this all the time, I am friendly and polite with everyone , because I see the opposite all the time. And it is true, a lot of staff ARE rude to customers, so I just smile and say hello, how are you doing today? It usually takes them aback, or they appreciate the kindness. So all the people out there, either as a customer or staff dealing with the public, please be a little more considerate of others, remember the Golden Rule. And remember this..... I am NOT your mother, and not getting paid to clean up after you!

Welcome to my world, bornnice - since working in retail I've learned that a lot of people can't shop without making a mess and the only time they act like humans instead of monkeys is when an employee is watching over them like they're 2 year olds that have to be supervised

I have a friend that does that sort of think picks from different areas shes phobic and also has other issues also because of horrible things that happened to her. Knowing that I would be very patient and kind because I had weird things happen in my life also and am very far from normal...BUTT. If it were someone I knew that was a real ---hole I'd probably jam both custards in my mouth and let them drip down all over my shirt while making King Kong sounds.....Just another side effect of my brain damage..

I remember back in the day when the customer was always right. She should be able to buy the items SHE wants, not the items you want her to have.

Maybe she likes her icing as thick as her make-up!

All kidding aside, I think Paumanok and Henry L. Moon said it best! It's your job - do it the best you can. Make it your goal to be the best damn pastry-getter in the world!

As an aside, I was a drive-up teller at a bank for about 2.5 years. OMG! Just try telling someone their account is overdrawn! I cannot think of one incident when it was anyone's fault but the account holder's. I could write a book about my experiences dealing with people and their money - it truly surpasses anything I have ever done before or since. I made it my goal to make EVERY customer smile. I came pretty durn close. In fact, there were many who, when pulling into the drive and seeing me at the window, put a smile on their face before they got there!

The one mantra that always saved me: "Don't let any person have that much power over you that they can ruin your entire day in just a few minutes."

as a restaurant server, I know just what you mean. BUT, I always smile. And remember, they must have a lonely life to be so petty and rude. Just get her the ones she wants, smile and thank her. She may turn into one of your favorite guests later (I have had that happen before).

the original poster should have smile quietly to the customer then whisperd discreetly " Im not supposed to do this but please tell me which type she desires and And I'll make sure in the future I put the best ones to one side for you!
and quietly marvel at your Maccevelian skills with the customers.

I treat people the same way that they treat me,be it personel or work related.Working as a bus driver the number of ppl that over talk and ask questions whilst im serving a passenger with a query or change,is unbelievable and basically say to them;
"excuse me,im serving someone here do you mind waiting your turn and stop being so rude",embarrasses them to no end. Also when i run late particualary when its raining and they winge i tell them im not running late im on a wet weather timetable. That shuts em up.Also saying this with a smile.
