| Men over 45 and facial hair Posted: 12/30/2008 8:57:21 PM | | I prefer no facial hair. It makes men look older. (which is ok in your 20's-30's) I feel like I am going out with santa claus. It's just a personal preference as far as attraction. However if a man has a great personality I am willing to over look some facial hair. I probably have things that some men do/don't find attractive. It's in the eye of the beholden.... | |

| Men over 45 and facial hair Posted: 12/30/2008 9:33:40 PM | | I think its a matter of what works and what dosn't. I've mostly been told I look better with a mustache, goatee or both. So that's what I do. Not going to touch the other comments for now as for their utility. | |

| Men over 45 and facial hair Posted: 12/30/2008 11:24:49 PM | I think that hairstyle has a great deal to do with the mores and fashions of the era in which we were adolescents. I did a study for a statistics class one time on male/vs/female preferances in hair length-- with age of the men and women being a factor. Men and Women in MY age band preferred long hair -- the younger generations were statistically significant in NOT preferring it. Might have a lot to do with first experiences, too-- I like mustaches -- a lot -- and am okay on beards. Grooming being the determining factor. I think it's a guy in ZZTop with the super long skanky looking beard -- UGH --. I also remember dating this gorgeous man with shiny black hair and well groomed dashing lookng beard -- and then one day he showed up with it SHAVED -- face, that is-- and he went from a dashing man about town appearance to a rather bland and round faced look. Seems his job required a smooth look.... also seems that about that time was when I found out he was married -- so I didn't have to get too fussy about facial hair, with or without.
Oh, yeah-- and I think that a great deal of what folks might call negative communication online is purely that there is a great deal of difference in how we communicated in pure writing (online) vs. in person. The same thing said in person -with the accompanying body language and intonations -- won't mean the same if it is just written straight out. It's safest to just assume the persons mean it positively.

| Men over 45 and facial hair Posted: 12/31/2008 6:14:18 AM | I likes the furry fellows :) My head'll still turn faster when someone's sporting a moustache. Beards are ok, too. Mind, as the above poster said, you can keep ZZTop - they're over the top and then some. Not crazy about long hair, though. That just says to me that the wearer is still stuck in the 60s.
That said, I've never been crazy about goatees and I'm not loving the current trend that has so many guys sporting them. I also don't like the scruffy look - shave or grow a beard, willya? Beards arent' scratchy but stubble sure as heck is - ouch.

| Men over 45 and facial hair Posted: 12/31/2008 9:36:57 AM | | Not me--I'm clean-shaven. My salt-and-pepper beard is mostly salt at this point, so I don't really wish to be reminded how old I am every time I look in the mirror. Oh, sure, there are products like "Just for Men-Beards", but, also, my beard is a scraggly mess that itches, so my face just feels better shaven. | |

| Men over 45 and facial hair Posted: 12/31/2008 4:43:08 PM | Facial hair covers up other imperfections. Plus, after a few divorces and dating middle aged freaks, they may be scared to put a razor that close to their necks . . . | |
|
| Men over 45 and facial hair Posted: 12/31/2008 5:05:37 PM | | I am 45 and always loved to be clean shaved, just like a new haircut. It just makes me feel better about myself and I hope the ladies like my clean cut appearance too. | |

| Men over 45 and facial hair Posted: 1/1/2009 3:39:55 PM | I started shaving at 13. I hated it then, and I still do. Plus, after about 2 hours the clean shave is gone and my face feels like coarse sandpaper anyway, so whats the use? That is my largest reason for having a beard. For the biggest part of my adult life I have worn a beard. Sometimes several inches long, but mostly neat and trim. For those who know me, they say I look much better with a beard than without. Clean shaven, I still have a baby face.
So, if ya don't dig men with a beard, thats ok. Please understand I prefer my women cleanly shaven also.

| Men over 45 and facial hair Posted: 1/1/2009 6:34:04 PM | I am 60 and clean shaven. I grew a moustache when i was in army officer cadet school, as the whole 27 course members did. I ended up with a waxed handle-bar, but my hair was so curly, the moustache followed suite. When I finished with the Army (or was it vice-versa???) I extended it to a full beard and started to grow my hair out, having survived the 60s with short hair and the 7s was fast approaching. The long hair was quickly dumped, my hair is so fine, it just wouldn't co-operate, but the beard stayed for a few years. I cut it off when I started a club/hotel manager's course, you couldn't work in the food industry with facial hair in those days.
I was at work in the mid 80s and showed a picture of me commanding a centurion tank, complete with red moustache. My workmates encouraged me to start it off again and I did, but it didn't last long, it was peppered with grey and my face was a bit fuller as I was almost 40, so I gave it the flick.
I now feel that the older and definetly the fatter guys get, the sillier they look with facial hair, but thats just my opinion.
As to ladies, I don't mind grey hair, but if given the choice prefer them to wear it real short, althought there is one lady in my home town who has steel grey hair in a huge plait, she is mega hot! But unfortunately (for me) she is very happily married. Don't get near me when shes around, I might start humping your leg!
As to ladies body hair, I likkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkke it natural, the more the merrier!
One thing I really can't abide with and am completely unable to take a person seriously for is the dreaded comb over, forget about it!!!!

| Men over 45 and facial hair Posted: 1/1/2009 7:20:30 PM | Just wanted to weigh in on this one. I wear a beard when it is cold outside, I wear other various styles because I look like a Q-ball when I shave my head in the summer, which I do every year. I have a full beard now, but it is coming off when it warms up along with my scalp hair. Have to keep something on my face, though. I think I look goofy otherwise, not that I don't look goofy now, but practicality rules, especially with -30 wind chills. | |

I love a soft beard or that "5 o'clock shadow"! I think it all depends on how it looks on a man. If kept trimmed and groomed, it can look pretty hot! Facial hair to me is simply part of what goes with the man that makes him attractive to us. He has it, he doesn't. Not a big deal to me either way.
I too am attracted to the more rugged look of a mustache and beard or goatee that is neat, not shaggy. Some men have too big of an upper lip to NOT have a mustache.(like my brother) (you know it bro)

| Men over 45 and facial hair Posted: 1/1/2009 11:05:04 PM | | My late husband had a huge, honkin' moustache. I loved it....it tickled my fancy AND my upper lip. | |

| Men over 45 and facial hair Posted: 1/2/2009 11:25:10 AM | So many threads on here about hair....upper, lower, all the fun bits in between...long hair, short hair, no hair. ..pluck it, tweeze it, shave it, wax it, sugar it all off.
For me the eyes have it and if those eyes top a ZZ Top beard or smooth cheeks it all works for me. I'm rather partial to facial hair but the lack there of can't be a deal breaker even if someone starts shaving at their collar bones and stops at their shoulders though should you be one of those men who are blessed with chest and back hair wouldn't it be more comfortable to just accept it? I like bald or shaved heads too but lawsy it seems like an awful lot of pointless busy work to shave everything above your t-shirt collar. Just sayin'.
My only problem with moustaches is that 5 or 6 days after they've been trimmed. Ouch.

| Men over 45 and facial hair Posted: 1/3/2009 10:12:32 AM | Hmm, so many men over 45. Well at 48, I've had a full beard for 20+ years, do I guess that means that I was one of the ones that had beards under 45. Now that I am single and looking, I decided to try shaving once again. It doesn't take long to remember why I hated it. The scratchy feel after a day and the skin irritation are almost enough to make me grow it back. I'll give it a try for a while, but who knows.
I thought by removing it, I might shave a few years off my appearance. I've been trying to keep it trimmed and short but the gray was enough to age me more than I wanted. Hopefully I'll get some feedback on whether it is worth it to keep shaving, or just let it grow back.

| Men over 45 and facial hair Posted: 1/3/2009 10:34:27 AM | I've had facial hair since I went to college back in the late 60's early 70's. I always kept it neat and trimmed even back then. I originally grew it because shaving was irratating my skin due to excema that I had back then. Well I outgrew the allergy and now find that I just hate shaving and my ex who I was married to for almost 34 years liked it so it was a no brainer for me. I still have to shave to keep it neat because I have more hair now. It somehow migrated to my face from the top of my head! Now I don't do combovers but must admit that a hat comes in handy in the cold and the sun!
So there you have it! That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Facial hair is seasonal for me. Always has been. This is facial hair season.
Ditto for me. I started turning gray when I was 10, shaving when I was 12. Had to shave when I was in the Army, but when I got out, every winter I quit shaving and every summer I shave it off. Fortunately my beard looks pretty good compared to some others and I like making kids' eyes pop out around Christmas-time. I know it makes me look 20 years older, but so what?
|
| Men over 45 and facial hair Posted: 1/3/2009 6:11:05 PM | I wish I could grow a beard! If I don't shave for a few days my face looks like a bad patchwork quilt!

| Men over 45 and facial hair Posted: 1/3/2009 7:41:01 PM | | For the most part, I think most men that sport a beard are hiding a good looking face and it also makes them look older. Now that's not to say it about all men that wear beards. | |

| Men over 45 and facial hair Posted: 1/4/2009 2:25:59 PM | Interesting post and responses. I have had a mustache for over 30 years. No idea why I grew it-nor why I have kept it all these years. I guess it is just a part of me.
No one has ever suggested I lose it. That is until recently, when my adult daughter said it would make me look younger without it. Is that a reason to shave it off?
Anyone remember Art Linkletter's show segment "Kids say The Darndest Things"? Heck, if that were the case, I would have lost it 20 years ago when I thought looks mattered. LOL

| Men over 45 and facial hair Posted: 1/4/2009 5:45:08 PM | whats wrong with facial hair. i take pride in my goatee, and have had it since i was 17. every girl i ever was involved with loved it and thought i was handsome. personally i think i look like crap without it and would never shave it off for a women.beauty runs deeper than facial hair baby | |

| Men over 45 and facial hair Posted: 1/4/2009 6:16:37 PM | | Hate shaving! A close trim is easier and quicker. It eliminates the five o'clock shadow and will even forgive a skipped day or two. No razor cuts or no beard stubble in the sink and on the countertop from electric shavers. What's not to love about beards. Then there's the swollen tender pink face look that plagues anyone for weeks who starts shaving again after a long hiatus . That alone is enough disincentive to restart. But I wouldn't hesitate if it pleased someone I wanted to please. | |
