Men with their facial hair are sometimes like women with their long hair.
They think it's all good....and it isn't.
It's personal preference...what people like...and not everyone looks good
with facial hair or long hair...and not everyone maintains it like they should.
I did find it amusing that somehow women who do like beards are
more sensual or some such stuff.

Way back in the early 80's when I was roughneckin' over on the other side of the hill I got in the habit of shaving in the summer and letting it grow out in the winter. Much cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter that way. Working outdoors in a high plains desert year round, you tend to take the temps into consideration. Of course, the beard/moustache had to be kept trimmed so the oxygen masks would work properly.

I got out of that line of work in 84, but I still shave in the summer and let grow in the winter. The only difference is that now I shave the entire cranium instead of just the facial hairs.

I started out with a mustache in my early 20s only because I found that I finally could grow one, then I tried a beard, couldn't get past the itchy stage, playing around with my razor, I discovered the fu-manchu. stayed with a mustache or a fu for many years. In my 40s I tried a beard again, couldn't get past the itchy stage, so I discovered the goatee, stayed with the fu or a goatee ever since and suceeded with a beard in the winter for the last few years.
The reason I grow facial hair is........I look like a kid with nothing and No. 1..........

I really hate shaving...lol

Being age group specific, think of what was popular in the 60's & 70's when we were coming of age. Beards & mustaches! Younger men don't wear them so often because it was never popular for their age group. I started wearing a mustache at 14 & wearing a beard since I graduated high school. It was cool then. Not so sure now, but it's a part of who I am now. I think men who start wearing them later in life have a variety of reasons, but ultimately, we like the way it looks.

Agree that men w/facial hair are like women with their long hair from the 60's and 70's...won't let it go, still think it's cool and attractive. Not to to everyone. And I totally disagree that women who like facial hair are more sensual...men who think this are justifying their having facial hair and are totally missing something...but, hey, their loss...

i prefer clean-shaven - it's difficult to find in this age group.

however, i'm beginning to think i need to update my profile to at least include *some* of what i would prefer in a mate - including that.

My tastes have changed as I've gotten older. . I like the beard, mustache . . goatee?? Don't know about that. . . would have to depend more on the type of man who wore it. Stubble on one or other?? Would depend on the man. (ya know*, hey there)

I came to this dance waaay late...

I have a beard for one reason, and one reason only: I look much better with it than without it. I can present sworn affidavits to this affect from people who know me. And no, I'm not posting a pic without so anyone can compare. you'll just have to trust me on this one.

I've had a beard since I was twenty. I came in from a job having had to bug out quickly with no time to shave and went directly to see the g/f at the time. The g/f's step mom****d her head to one side and said"You know, you'd probably look pretty good with a beard." Her being a very attractive "older" woman, and me being chock-a-block full of 20 year old hormones, how could I do less? My g/f soon to be fiancee was *very* pleased. Now, I wasn't particularly displeased with my looks, such as they were, before the hair, but I got a *lot* more female attention with it. Then, you have to understand, this was the late '70s, the age of the BeeGees and Kenny Loggins, so....

So it's simple really. I wear a beard because I like it.

~OT~ All of this talk about long hair after a woman turns 40 makes me giggle. I didn't have long hair til I was over 40. It's not leaving anytime soon and I've yet to hear one single complaint about it not looking appropriate for my age. And even if I did? Too bad ~ it's stayin' because I like it. My personal preferences for men?? I have a penchant for goatees, especially those which are uniquely groomed. It takes a special face to pull that off, but when it works ~ it really works (at least for me.)

I adore goatees, but don't expect every man to have one. Some men just look better clean shaven; a few look OK in a full beard, or in a 'stache. I'm definitely not a big fan of the ZZ Top-style beard. I don't even think the guys in ZZ Top can pull those off.

I've always loved my men hairy...although I also love the bald head.

BUT...aside from looks, there is another reason I love "fuzzy-faces"...since I've gotten older, my skin has gotten thinner. Now, if a guy has any stubble at all when he kisses me, it rubs me like sandpaper, and actually rubs me raw! Unless I plan to get involved with a guy and have it involve no kissing....(No thanks!)....I'm afraid he will now have to grow a beard. I wouldn't ask him too, though. I think if he SEES what it does to me, and doesn't suggest it himself, that would mean that he's too insensitive for me.

I have had a moustache since I was 19. I tried clean shaven right after my divorce and thought I looked rather silly so grew it back. I have had a beard at various times in my life, but now if I try to grow one it’s a spectrum of colors (mostly gray) my beard is weird . Maybe when I get to Santa Claus age I would try it again . I'd love to be an authentic Mall Santa some day. For now I’m sticking with the young Teddy Roosevelt look. Bully!! It’s what I’m confident with. Love it or not.

Yes, agree. That's why I started this thread in the first place. Older men seem to have facial hair far more often then younger men.

Ha, ...if it were that easy.

If I have to change how "I am" to please someone else's preferences? ...just means I'm with the wrong person.

I've had at least a mustache since I was in the service. I shaved it off once in my mid 30s, and was immediately told by everyone (including my kids) to grow it back. I used to grow a beard on Thanksgiving weekend and keep it until Opening Day of baseball season, then I went to a goatee, and now I am back to just my 'stache. (Beard makes me look like Santa LOL)

It really is a matter of personal preference, but there is a school of thought that, as when a woman changes her hair color, a man shaves or grows facial hair as a sign of change. At this stage in my life, I am too tired to make major changes. So, the 'stache stays.

For the ladies, whether you like facial hair or not is YOUR preference. But if you truly care about someone, the outer appearance is just packaging. It's the heart and soul of a person that you fall in love with, n'est ce pas? (No I don't SPEAK French)

Being a man with a large bigote (handlebar mustache) I wear it in homage to my great, grandfather Kit Carson. Sheriff in the old West days. He had a large bigote.
Now, let me add my two cents - It's a conversation starter for those who aren't afraid of high testosterone. I've had it since 18 and I can do fun and funny things with it, like touch my eyeballs with the tips. Maybe I should do a Youtube video of me doing that, get a million hits and bring some humor back into the world... LOL.

chérie, you don't have to change yourself to please someone else's preference. it just means i will not be attracted to you. i suspect it's because my dad had a moustache most of his life and there's the "incest ick factor"!

don't know why it was but just about all of us pilots in vietnam had mustaches. guess it's the wayatt erp gun slinger thing. shaved mine off right after reterning home. did grow a beard for a time when i had my own business after leaving the army but found a beard to be more trouble than regular shaving.

Some men are enhanced by their "facial fur." Some aren't. It's just that simple for me and a matter of personal preference. I gravitate towards men that have "facial fur." I always have, probably always will, but it's just part of the initial attraction for me. What keeps me attracted is a warm, humerous, intelligent personality with a kind heart and a bit of the devil in them.

Had a lady friend tell me once that she would consider dating steadily me if I shaved my beard off and my immediate reply was "When you get a boob job too".

Needless to say we never official dated as in a steady relationship.

We still talk time to time though when she is not being a snipity biznitch.

Some women are just so bleeping f'ing shallow I swear.

I like a man with a bushy mustache........I like the rest of the face cleaned shaved. I also like hair that touchs the collar.
