| Gulf Coast(ers), are you ready????? Posted: 9/5/2008 9:34:19 AM | Hey souzou,
You appear to have power in Mandeville, which surprises me. Is the power still mostly out in Covington? They don't seem to have phone service yet, either. I read the St. Tammany forums to see what's going on and of course CLECO's site for power outages, but that's about all the information I can find. Just trying to talk to my dad.

| Gulf Coast(ers), are you ready????? Posted: 9/5/2008 9:53:00 AM | A little irony here....In a previous post I had stated members from our church had been to help Katrina survivors 17 times Tomorrow we have a "Back to the Bayou" event scheduled to make money for our next trip. As luck would have it we are in the path of Hurricane Hanna scheduled to hit here.....you guessed it.....tomorrow...fortunately it has been downgraded to a TS but alas we will not be able to have the event, Althought the tents are up for the food and entertainment. They are calling for high winds and 7 inches of rain in our area, thankfully not a low lying area here...........in any event it looks like we will be bailing, but will still have the Bayou on our minds.(I sense a song there lol)
But not to fear..we will get back down there.

| Gulf Coast(ers), are you ready????? Posted: 9/5/2008 12:40:42 PM | | Well, even unnamed storms can dump a ton of rain unexpectedly. Years ago a freak storm dropped 17 inches of rain in 12 hours on my parents' neighborhood, causing their house to flood. Luckily, they had most of their stuff on the second floor. The cars were under water for a day, though. We totalled the Buick and drained the oils out of the Jeep and truck. Amazingly, both still continue to run to this day. | |

I haven't ventured towards Covington but I know some major businesses are up in running. Cleco seems to be making a walk-around of each neighborhood before it turns on power in an attempt to check for tree limbs or downed lines that could start a fire when the power is turned on. I guess it just depends where you are on the list. Luck of the draw.

And guess what...New Orleans is a city of taxpayers and taxpaying corporations. We have a claim on public spending. NYC needs protection from terrorists, California needs protection from wildfires, we just want someone to built some non-sucky concrete walls.
Thanks for that. I've been avoiding this forum for the past week because the stress, frankly, has been too high and I didn't want to take it out on anyone.
What's really disturbing is to listen to people go on and on about how "U.S. taxpayers" have to pay to rebuild NOLA (which actually isn't happening) while forgetting that people in the Gulf Coast ARE U.S. taxpayers who have already payed for natural disasters occuring across the country as well as for terrorist attacks, industrial accidents and, oh yeah, THE WAR IN IRAQ.
If I had my druthers, I'd be paying all of my taxes into helping my home instead of helping the Bush administration and his Haliburton buddies slaughter our kids across the ocean just so they can make a profit. But, that's just me.
For all the people still living in the Gulf Coast, I wish you peace and fair weather and lots of hugs because y'all deserve it. Those still in the storms path, take care and know I'm sending out good vibes your way.
For everyone else who has negative things to say about NOLA, I sincerely hope you will remain forever blissfully ignorant of how horrible it is to live through something like that and how bad it feels to encounter those with more ego than empathy.
