| It looks like McCain's VP pick is Sarah Palin Posted: 9/6/2008 7:00:46 PM | It is so funny that many of the people screaming sexism concerning Palin had no problem calling emphasizing Obama's entire name (Barak Hussein Obama) to project fear and say that it is not racism. Where were those people when Hillary was being attacked by the media. It is just the republicans turn. Just a thought.

| It looks like McCain's VP pick is Sarah Palin Posted: 9/6/2008 9:57:24 PM | Dallas,
I heard about the cost of the dress on my way to work. I thought, that was not a good move. Our country is in a recession and she is wearing a dress that cost more than the average Americans home. Yes, she is proud of her husband after the drama he went through running against Bush, but that was too much. It was not just the dress the entire outfit was totally off the chain in price. The watch was worth thousands. This party wants to represent the common man.

| It looks like McCain's VP pick is Sarah Palin Posted: 9/6/2008 10:15:52 PM | | psssttt Faith? What you heard on the radio wasn't true, its the same crap that exodus was parroting. That figure included some expensive diamond jewelry she was wearing, nothing at all to do with the dress. The dress cost $3000 - still not cheap, of course, but only about 1/100 of what the liberal radio stations you and exodus are listening to are apparently trying to claim. | |

| It looks like McCain's VP pick is Sarah Palin Posted: 9/6/2008 11:05:27 PM | The major policy and governance issues at stake in the coming election here are grave -- anyone who doesn't understand that (and would cast their vote in this election based upon a single domestic issue or a "personality" preference rather than take the time to do an in-depth fact-check on the backgrounds and affiliations of the candidates) is an idiot.
The letter excerpted below was written by a fellow resident of Palin's Alaskan city who knows the candidate personally and knows the details of her political career. I've anonymized it because she requested that it NOT be posted publicly. The writer was brave to do this (and is justly concerned about repercussions.) But, the truth is the truth, and everything stated here is verifiable.
My read on this Veep selection is that, once again (remember 1992?), the RNC believes that the women of America are dumb twits, who are only capable of considering superficial appearances in casting their votes. If the Constitution didn't have restrictions on age, species and inanimate objects, the RNC would have nominated as the Geezer's running mate either a baby, a basket of kittens or a pair of Manolo Blahnik pumps in an attempt to attract the "chick vote."
This is a post in response to the Washington Independent article entitled "The Reform Candidate?" [http://www.washingtonindependent.com/3671/the-reform-candidate] Dear friends, So many people have asked me about what I know about Sarah Palin in the last 2 days that I decided to write something up . You have my permission to forward this to your friends/email contacts with my name and email address attached, but please do not post it on any websites, as there are too many kooks out there . . .
ABOUT SARAH PALIN I am a resident of Wasilla, Alaska. Everyone here knows Sarah, so it is nothing special to say we are on a first-name basis. Our children have attended the same schools. I attended more City Council meetings during her administration than about 99% of the residents of the city. She is enormously popular; in every way she's like the most popular girl in middle school. Even men who think she is a poor choice and won't vote for her can't quit smiling when talking about her because she is a "babe". It is astonishing and almost scary how well she can keep a secret. She kept her most recent pregnancy a secret from her children and parents for seven months. She is "pro-life". She recently gave birth to a Down's syndrome baby. There is no cover-up involved, here; Trig is her baby. She is energetic and hardworking. She regularly worked out at the gym. She is savvy. She doesn't take positions; she just "puts things out there" and if they prove to be popular, then she takes credit. Her husband works a union job on the North Slope for BP and is a champion snowmobile racer. Todd Palin's kind of job is highly sought-after because of the schedule and high pay. He arranges his work schedule so he can fish for salmon in Bristol Bay for a month or so in summer, but by no stretch of the imagination is fishing their major source of income. Nor has her life-style ever been anything like that of native Alaskans. Sarah and her whole family are avid hunters. She's smart. Her experience is as mayor of a city with a population of about 5,000 (at the time), and less than 2 years as governor of a state with about 670,000 residents. During her mayoral administration most of the actual work of running this small city was turned over to an administrator. She had been pushed to hire this administrator by party power-brokers after she had gotten herself into some trouble over precipitous firings which had given rise to a recall campaign. Sarah campaigned in Wasilla as a "fiscal conservative". During her 6 years as Mayor, she increased general government expenditures by over 33%. During those same 6 years the amount of taxes collected by the City increased by 38%. This was during a period of low inflation (1996-2002). She reduced progressive property taxes and increased a regressive sales tax which taxed even food. The tax cuts that she promoted benefited large corporate property owners way more than they benefited residents. The huge increases in tax revenues during her mayoral administration weren't enough to fund everything on her wish list though, borrowed money was needed, too. She inherited a city with zero debt, but left it with indebtedness of over $22 million. What did Mayor Palin encourage the voters to borrow money for? Was it the infrastructure that she said she supported? The sewage treatment plant that the city lacked? or a new library? No. $1m for a park. $15m-plus for construction of a multi-use sports complex which she rushed through to build on a piece of property that the City didn't even have clear title to, that was still in litigation 7 yrs later--to the delight of the lawyers involved! The sports complex itself is a nice addition to the community but a huge money pit, not the profit-generator she claimed it would be. She also supported bonds for $5.5m for road projects that could have been done in 5-7 yrs without any borrowing. While Mayor, City Hall was extensively remodeled and her office redecorated more than once. These are small numbers, but Wasilla is a very small city. As an oil producer, the high price of oil has created a budget surplus in Alaska. Rather than invest this surplus in technology that will make us energy independent and increase efficiency, as Governor she proposed distribution of this surplus to every individual in the state. In this time of record state revenues and budget surpluses, she recommended that the state borrow/bond for road projects, even while she proposed distribution of surplus state revenues: spend today's surplus, borrow for needs. She's not very tolerant of divergent opinions or open to outside ideas or compromise. As Mayor, she fought ideas that weren't generated by her or her staff. Ideas weren't evaluated on their merits, but on the basis of who proposed them. While Sarah was Mayor of Wasilla she tried to fire our highly respected City Librarian because the Librarian refused to consider removing from the library some books that Sarah wanted removed. City residents rallied to the defense of the City Librarian and against Palin's attempt at out-and-out censorship, so Palin backed down and withdrew her termination letter. People who fought her attempt to oust the Librarian are on her enemies list to this day. Sarah complained about the "old boy's club" when she first ran for Mayor, so what did she bring Wasilla? A new set of "old boys". Palin fired most of the experienced staff she inherited. At the City and as Governor she hired or elevated new, inexperienced, obscure people, creating a staff totally dependent on her for their jobs and eternally grateful and fiercely loyal--loyal to the point of abusing their power to further her personal agenda, as she has acknowledged happened in the case of pressuring the State's top cop (see below). As Mayor, Sarah fired Wasilla's Police Chief because he "intimidated" her, she told the press. As Governor, her recent firing of Alaska's top cop has the ring of familiarity about it. He served at her pleasure and she had every legal right to fire him, but it's pretty clear that an important factor in her decision to fire him was because he wouldn't fire her sister's ex-husband, a State Trooper. Under investigation for abuse of power, she has had to admit that more than 2 dozen contacts were made between her staff and family to the person that she later fired, pressuring him to fire her ex-brother-in-law. She tried to replace the man she fired with a man who she knew had been reprimanded for sexual harassment; when this caused a public furor, she withdrew her support. She has bitten the hand of every person who extended theirs to her in help. The City Council person who personally escorted her around town introducing her to voters when she first ran for Wasilla City Council became one of her first targets when she was later elected Mayor. She abruptly fired her loyal City Administrator; even people who didn't like the guy were stunned by this ruthlessness. Fear of retribution has kept all of these people from saying anything publicly about her. When then-Governor Murkowski was handing out political plums, Sarah got the best, Chair of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission: one of the few jobs not in Juneau and one of the best paid. She had no background in oil & gas issues. Within months of scoring this great job which paid $122,400/yr, she was complaining in the press about the high salary. I was told that she hated that job: the commute, the structured hours, the work. Sarah became aware that a member of this Commission (who was also the State Chair of the Republican Party) engaged in unethical behavior on the job. In a gutsy move which some undoubtedly cautioned her could be political suicide, Sarah solved all her problems in one fell swoop: got out of the job she hated and garnered gobs of media attention as the patron saint of ethics and as a gutsy fighter against the "old boys' club" when she dramatically quit, exposing this man's ethics violations (for which he was fined). As Mayor, she had her hand stuck out as far as anyone for pork from Senator Ted Stevens. Lately, she has castigated his pork-barrel politics and publicly humiliated him. She only opposed the "bridge to nowhere" after it became clear that it would be unwise not to. As Governor, she gave the Legislature no direction and budget guidelines, then made a big grandstand display of line-item vetoing projects, calling them pork. Public outcry and further legislative action restored most of these projects--which had been vetoed simply because she was not aware of their importance--but with the unobservant she had gained a reputation as "anti-pork". She is solidly Republican: no political maverick. The State party leaders hate her because she has bit them in the back and humiliated them. Other members of the party object to her self-description as a fiscal conservative. Around Wasilla there are people who went to high school with Sarah. They call her "Sarah Barracuda" because of her unbridled ambition and predatory ruthlessness. Before she became so powerful, very ugly stories circulated around town about shenanigans she pulled to be made point guard on the high school basketball team. When Sarah's mother-in-law, a highly respected member of the community and experienced manager, ran for Mayor, Sarah refused to endorse her. As Governor, she stepped outside of the box and put together of package of legislation known as "AGIA" that forced the oil companies to march to the beat of her drum. Like most Alaskans, she favors drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. She has questioned if the loss of sea ice is linked to global warming. She campaigned "as a private citizen" against a state initiaitive that would have either a) protected salmon streams from pollution from mines, or b) tied up in the courts all mining in the state (depending on who you listen to). She has pushed the State's lawsuit against the Dept. of the Interior's decision to list polar bears as threatened species. McCain is the oldest person to ever run for President; Sarah will be a heartbeat away from being President. There has to be literally millions of Americans who are more knowledgeable and experienced than she. However, there's a lot of people who have underestimated her and are regretting it. CLAIM VS FACT * "Hockey mom": true for a few years * "PTA mom": true years ago when her first-born was in elementary school, not since * "NRA supporter": absolutely true * social conservative: mixed. Opposes gay marriage, BUT vetoed a bill that would have denied benefits to employees in same-sex relationships (said she did this because it was unconsitutional). * pro-creationism: mixed. Supports it, BUT did nothing as Governor to promote it. * "Pro-life": mixed. Knowingly gave birth to a Down's syndrome baby BUT declined to call a special legislative session on some pro-life legislation * "Experienced": Some high schools have more students than Wasilla has residents. Many cities have more residents than the state of Alaska. No legislative experience other than City Council. Little hands-on supervisory or managerial experience; needed help of a city administrator to run town of about 5,000. * political maverick: not at all * gutsy: absolutely! * open & transparent: ??? Good at keeping secrets. Not good at explaining actions. * has a developed philosophy of public policy: no * "a Greenie": no. Turned Wasilla into a wasteland of big box stores and disconnected parking lots. Is pro-drilling off-shore and in ANWR. * fiscal conservative: not by my definition! * pro-infrastructure: No. Promoted a sports complex and park in a city without a sewage treatment plant or storm drainage system. Built streets to early 20th century standards. * pro-tax relief: Lowered taxes for businesses, increased tax burden on residents * pro-small government: No. Oversaw greatest expansion of city government in Wasilla's history. * pro-labor/pro-union. No. Just because her husband works union doesn't make her pro-labor. I have seen nothing to support any claim that she is pro-labor/pro-union. WHY AM I WRITING THIS? First, I have long believed in the importance of being an informed voter. I am a voter registrar. If you google my name (name deleted at request of writer), you will find references to my participation in local government, education, and PTA/parent organizations. Secondly, I've always operated in the belief that "Bad things happen when good people stay silent". Few people know as much as I do because few have gone to as many City Council meetings. Third, I am just a housewife. I don't have a job she can bump me out of. I don't belong to any organization that she can hurt. But, I am no fool; she is immensely popular here, and it is likely that this will cost me somehow in the future: that's life. Fourth, she has hated me since back in 1996, when I was one of the 100 or so people who rallied to support the City Librarian against Sarah's attempt at censorship. Fifth, I looked around and realized that everybody else was afraid to say anything because they were somehow vulnerable. CAVEATS I am not a statistician. I developed the numbers for the increase in spending & taxation 2 years ago (when Palin was running for Governor) from information supplied to me by the Finance Director of the City of Wasilla, and I can't recall exactly what I adjusted for: did I adjust for inflation? for population increases? Right now, it is impossible for a private person to get any info out of City Hall -- they are swamped. So I can't verify my numbers. You may have noticed that there are various numbers circulating for the population of Wasilla, ranging from my "about 5,000", up to 9,000. The day Palin's selection was announced a city official told me that the current population is about 7,000. The official 2000 census count was 5,460. I have used about 5,000 because Palin was Mayor from 1996 to 2002, and the city was growing rapidly in the mid-90's.

I love you but I do not listen to a politically biased radio station. I listen to Sunny 99.1 (Houston). Laura Bush's outfit was in that price range, Cindy's was in the 300,000.00 price range. I love you, but that is the truth. The republicans can not blame everything on the liberal media. Sometimes the media is just reporting the facts. If anything 99.1 would be one of the most conservative stations in the city. The only other station I listen to plays gospel/christian music. The jazz station is gone.

| It looks like McCain's VP pick is Sarah Palin Posted: 9/7/2008 8:57:37 AM | Obama and Biden have both taught, or are teaching (Biden's a teacher on Saturdays, for the moment ) constitutional law.
This is the oath taken by the President :
I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.
It might help to know, in detail (legally and historically) , what that latter part of that oath means.
Palin didn't even know what vice-presidents actually did, not so long ago.

Or possibly she said that in a light hearted manner to the reporter because they were not ready to announce it yet?
I saw the interview and I can interpret it as her trying to brush the reporter off without giving anything away and not alienating the reporter at the same time.
None of us know the strategies or the private thinking of any of the candidates. None of us are in the inside. Its easy to pick on every single little thing from where we sit, but fruitless, because WE really dont know. IMO

It still is Obama's to lose however right now McCain/Palin have the momentum. The polls have closed drastically since tthe Gov/Vp was added to the GOP ticket. Amazing that both McCain and Palin are viewed more favorably head to head then their counterparts.

| It looks like McCain's VP pick is Sarah Palin Posted: 9/7/2008 12:31:53 PM |
On the campaign trail Saturday, Gov. Sarah Palin defended her record on earmarks and spending claiming - per ABC's Jake Tapper - that she "championed reform of earmark spending by Congress, and I told the Congress thanks but no thanks on that 'Bridge to Nowhere.' If our state wanted a bridge, we'd build it ourselves."
By now, it is evident that the Alaska Republican is either knowingly deceiving voters or simply has her facts wrong when it comes to her support for the bridge. Palin backed the project when she ran for the governor's seat, even posing for a picture holding a t-shirt reading "Nowhere, Alaska" - a sympathetic gesture to the ridiculed construction plans.
And, it turns out, she once promised the voters of her home state that she would not only come to the defense of the bridge but would "not allow the spinmeisters to turn this project or any other into something that's so negative."
Here Palin is from an October 2, 2006 interview with the Ketchikan Daily News, conducted before she was elected governor (and before her opposition to the Bridge to Nowhere became a linchpin of her national persona).
"Asked what issues she's hearing about from Southeast Alaskans, Palin said many residents here feel they've been ignored in some sense.
"I'm hearing from a lot of Southeast residents who believe that maybe they haven't been given their due respect," she said. "Part of my agenda is making sure that Southeast is heard. That your projects are important. That we go to bat for Southeast when we're up against federal influences that aren't in the best interest of Southeast."
She cited the widespread negative attention focused on the Gravina Island crossing project.
"We need to come to the defense of Southeast Alaska when proposals are on the table like the bridge and not allow the spinmeisters to turn this project or any other into something that's so negative," Palin said.
The Gravina bridge proposal has been a priority of Govs. Frank Murkowski, Tony Knowles and previous governors as well as the Alaska Department of Transportation, said Palin.
"There needs to be a link between Ketchikan and its future and its future opportunities and progress, opening up land in this area," she said.
Then there is this quote that was picked up by NPR, in which Palin praised the pork that the Alaska congressional delegation was able to secure in the transportation bill. The praise of Don Young, who has been ridiculed for his earmarks and is under criminal investigation for his dealings with Alaska oil services company Veco Corp., is particularly problematic.
"And our congressional delegation, God bless 'em. They do a great job for us," Palin said at the forum hosted by the Alaska Professional Design Council. "Representative Don Young, especially God bless him, with transportation -- Alaska did so well under the very basic provisions of the transportation act that he wrote just a couple of years ago. We had a nice bump there. We're very, very fortunate to receive the largesse that Don Young was able to put together for Alaska."

Well, someone's flip flopped like a fresh caught salmon on an Alaskan riverbank.
She's running around claiming to have slain the dragon, telling that to the Americans who she wants to vote for her - and it's simply being proved another creative fictional story for the loving masses to applaud.

| It looks like McCain's VP pick is Sarah Palin Posted: 9/7/2008 1:06:51 PM | I found the post about pitbull owners' reaction to Palin to be most interesting. I think a pitbull would do a much better job than Palin at being VP! Come to think of it, your average pitbull could have done a better job than Bush and its minions the last eight years: at least dogs are honest, and are incapable of the kind of damage that Bush has inflicted on our nation.
MG--great comment about her flip flopping more than a fresh caught Alaskan salmon
Here's a good picture of Sarah Palin flip flopping>>>>>

| It looks like McCain's VP pick is Sarah Palin Posted: 9/7/2008 1:18:34 PM | America will decide b/w McCain and Obama. America will decide b/w Palin and Biden... and/or Palin and Obama. At least the Republican VP is being compared and scrutinized against the parameters of Obama - who is running for President. Can't say that about Biden and McCain. Maybe that shows who common sense is looking to 'be a heartbeat from the Presidency'...meaning Sarah Palin... not Joe Biden.
This Country needs McCain/Palin at the helm. Not Obama/Biden. Just say Noobama.
Let's see how the polls roll out next week! Can't wait!
|
| It looks like McCain's VP pick is Sarah Palin Posted: 9/7/2008 1:40:14 PM | NO, our country BADLY needs Obama/Biden. SAY NO TO MCCAIN AND FOUR MORE YEARS of Bush's idiotic policies that are putting our country down the drain.
MCCAIN=Down the drain
It saddens me to see so many people brainwashed and fooled into believing that an immature old man who can't control his temper and a "hockey mom" with a bent toward censorship should lead our country.
Obama is a smart man who is wise beyond his years, and has executive experience in the private sector, having run a community organization before becoming a legislator. His background is similar to Abraham Lincoln's and he has the potential to be a great president! Biden's international experience nicely complements Obama's. I would MUCH rather have Joe Biden being a heartbeat away from the Presidency. He has the knowledge, the experience and the ability to take over at a moment's notice. Obama showed his respect and love for our country by picking a man who can take over in case Obama is incapacitated. Sound judgement is critical in a president, and the Veep pick is an indication of the kind of judgement a candidate has.
McCain's choice of Palin shows extremely POOR judgement. Palin is totally unprepared to take over and does not have the experience or the ability to be President. OBAMA himself has more experience--the same as Abraham Lincoln had when he took office. Obama also is a constitutional lawyer, and Lincoln was an attorney before taking office. Palin would no doubt wet her pants in fear if McCain is incapacitated, and that is a danger to our nation!!
Even Peggy Noonan was caught on video saying that Palin was a BS choice!!
|
| It looks like McCain's VP pick is Sarah Palin Posted: 9/7/2008 1:40:48 PM | At least the Republican VP is being compared and scrutinized against the parameters of Obama - who is running for President. That would be because the Republican presidential nominee has one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel, not for any reasons you'd like to believe. That's just wishful thinking on your part.
Can't say that about Biden and McCain. I think the reason there hasn't been comparison between McCain and Biden is because nobody really questions Joe Biden's ability to step in and run the country should anything happen to Obama.
Maybe that shows who common sense is looking to 'be a heartbeat from the Presidency'...meaning Sarah Palin... not Joe Biden. Not exactly...no. What it does show is the consistent and repeated acknowledgment by both Democrats and Republicans that John McCain, in addition to being bad for this country, is too old and unhealthy to be President. Not to mention his emotional immaturity, impulsive decision making, and volatile temper.
EIGHT IS ENOUGH. NO MORE McSAME.

Obama is level headed, mature, has excellent judgement, and Biden could step in if Obama is incapacitated. Our country is in much better hands with the Obama/Biden ticket.
Nice response, Charlemagne

| It looks like McCain's VP pick is Sarah Palin Posted: 9/7/2008 1:56:10 PM | Here's a current review of the anecdotes and evidence of McCain's volatility:
mcclatchydc.com/227/story/51660.html
I'll only quote one of McCain's defenders on the point, to remind us all which campaign is taking the low road, and which is taking pains to tell it straight:
"Yeah, he has a temper. . . . It's obvious. You've seen it. But is John whatever his opposition painted him to be, this unstable guy who came out of a prisoner or war camp not capable of (acting rationally)? I don't buy that at all," said Democratic vice-presidential nominee and Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Joseph Biden of Delaware. That was an easy opportunity to land a low blow, and Sen Biden told it straight, as he has and will.
Don't skip the article. It reads like Moe Howard was elected to the Senate from Arizona. Do we want someone like this choosing our Vice President?

He stood by the statement during the primaries, but what would you have expected him to say? "I think Obama is ready to be President but I still want you to vote for me." Yeah ok. So you are saying Joe Biden lied! He could have simply said... "I am more ready" or "I am better prepared" but he specificaly said "He [Obama)Is Not Ready"! How can the American public have confidence in his readiness when his own running mate does not?
