This thread got me thinking.

People are recommended to eat 5 portions of fruit and veg, per day. Would it not be sensible for schools to provide large amounts of fruit n veg every day?

Get some, say, bananas, apples, oranges, coconuts, carrot, swede, turnip, mango, lettuce, cabbage and some fruit juices, and just make meals out of combinations of them.

I just figure,start at the source,and that's the home.

I agree. The school should provide healthy options at lunch for those students who will take advantage of them, but it shouldn't be their responsibility to force children to eat properly. That is the job of the parent.

What bothered me when I was in school was the fact that they didn't provide nearly as many healthy choices as they should have. It was mostly burgers, fries, fried chicken, chicken fried steak, pizza, spaghetti and meatballs, etc... The "Child Nutrition" line was loaded with Gatorade, Little Debbie snacks, and various chips. The salad/soup line was buffet style open to tampering, which isn't an appropriate way to distribute food in a school in my opinion. I usually brought my own lunch because their selection was so poor.

As someone mentioned there are healthy pizzas out there.

Healthful, perhaps. But not healthy. Unless you see a pizza that's jogging or doing push-ups. Healthful is a property; healthy is a condition.

Isn't it the fat, sugar and syrups that makes food taste good anyways? Why not teach moderation when it comes to this kinda stuff and just keep the kids active. Kill the tv and the video games. Kill the computer games and make them play outside and give them chores. Kill fast food too while we're at it. Teach kids to be responsible for their body without taking away all the flavor. Ya know?

Yep to the untutored palate.

"Why not teach moderation"

I did that (tried) with my babes and now I have a vegan ( she got highly upset when we killed chickens) and a son who wants meat all the time.

Dadgum boys.

They were country kids, chores, outside all the time, no fast food ever.....

For those who are unhappy with the decision, contact the school board and give them a pizza your mind.

Leafs - there are healthy pizzas, believe it or not. If the schools use whole wheat crust; limit the cheese; use chicken or very lean beef; and put on more veggies; what isn't there that can't be healthy about pizza? Give me a break - if people would eat in moderation (good ol portion control) and exercise a boat load, we wouldn't even be dealing with the Food Police.

Banning once-a-month pizza day just sounds like some politically correct bandaid, to be honest.

But why are schools in the catering business, anyway? And if the food is so crummy, why are parents giving their kids money to eat it instead of packing a lunch? Really, how much time or effort does it take to make a lunch?

I don't buy the dual-working no-time reasoning - most of the mothers in my childhood neighbourhood worked (granted, we were working-class immigrants, but this stay-at-home mom ideal of the past is pretty much a myth, in my opinion). We ate our sandwich and apple or whatever and that was that.

I don't get it.

meoowzie:

Just like with the kiddies..the family parrot screamed...the smell of homemade food will bring all living things to you.

Hey...you have to clean the cage bottom? I throw the seeds that Popeye won't eat to the edge of the porch. This year we had Popeye's garden grow there (tho it was a fight to get my son not to mow it down). And now I am feeding Popeye from his own garden!

He got fat from people food...I had to cut the little leg band from his foot 6 weeks after he took over my life. And it is a very funny story to all but me.

I grew a garden with my kiddies too years back..they learn to like veggies that they grow..and will eat them years after.

I agree wholeheartedly!

I think the key to good nutrition is...everything in moderation. And, putting it in a nutshell, a once-a-month Pizza Day (or even once-a-week Pizza Day) really shouldn't be the end of the world in ruining childrens' nutrition or dietary habits.... assuming their parents are already feeding them a healthy, balanced diet at home. Pizza Day should probably be seen as a "treat" to the kids, and I doubt than any parents who are already feeding their kids a healthy diet at home would really object to a once-a-month pizza slice at school. For those that aren't, and are feeding their kids happy meals 5 nights out of 7? Then it's rather the pot calling the kettle black, and I agree, a politically correct bandaid. In a seemingly overly-politically correct world in which the sort of people who would object to Pizza Day at school are probably also the biggest ones on the bandwagon expecting the schools and everyone else to raise their children for them, but still object when they aren't "teaching/raising" them the way they want. That isn't supposed to sound as harsh as I guess it came out, but...really, it's not that hard to pack a healthy lunch for a child if you object to them having pizza, no?

I've worked as a preschool teacher for over 4 years and some of those years were spent at a school that allowed the 3 and 4 year olds to have their lunches packed. It was unbelievable what parents would send with their children to eat. I personally hate the idea of "lunchables" but even they would have been better than the throw together meals I have seen. Some children were sent with a can of soda, a little baggie of marshmallows, a bag of chips, gummie fruit, and some prepackaged "cheese and crackers" (you know, the cheese that is a salty, grainy concoction?). I could not believe that these educated, well-to-do adults,(this was a private school and most of the parents were doctors, lawyers, and business executives) would give such trash to there young children!

After much discussion we made it a mandate that packed lunches could only have one "candy" item, no soda (milk, water, or juice..even though most fruit juice is colored syrup anymore), fruits/veggies, a dairy, a grain, and meat was optional (we had some vegetarians). If the child's meal did not meet standards we would send a notice to the parent. After a second notice the child would be given a school meal (provided there were no concerns of allergies or other dietery restrictions) and the cost charged to the parents. I know it seemed extremed but the lunches that the school offered were pretty healthy and had variety, so if the parents couldn't be bothered with packing a healthy meal one was gladly offered for next to nothing.

Naturally with this being a private school such measures could be taken in order ensure a healthy meal or two (we also offered breakfast).

These issues come and go with administrations mostly. I've been on school advisory boards and the fuss over issues like this is numbing at times. A non-issue really.. have it or not, it matters none.

Pizza is always bad for you and to sell it for profit is even worse. Start at the source. The school is the source too.
