hi there bg...on the thread here we take the last line from the previous poem and make it our first line...
i see that you have the traditional 5-7-5 syllabic structure we use here (which in true japanese haiku isn't followed) ...
anyway, welcome to the thread...

or casting shadows
in light of our cathedrals
deep within ourselves

(s'faith...japanese haikus were originally written in chinese characters more open to personal interpretation...basho's frog poem has been translated thousands of times....some say when the 5-7-5 syllabic pattern is used in translation it is often to the detriment of the poem...japanese haikus use language very sparsely to convey a nature scene....but when i taught it to elementary (up to high school) students i used the 5-7-5 pattern...lipo tufu understands the depth of haiku much more than i....but here, we have fun and like he mentioned the other day most of what we write here are actually senryu...human poems)

That is cool. The one thing nice about the 5-7-5 is that it causes you to have to pick your words more carefully. sensyy, eh? I will have to look that up now.

an old pond.
a frog leaps.
the sound of water.

by matsuo basho

(the first cool thing about this translation into english is that it comes close to the haiku that basho wrote using ancient characters. the second cool thing is that, like often happens with ancient chinese characters that fall somewhere in between pictures and the power of suggestion is that "the sound of water" may be the frog splashing into the pond, or it may be the sound of a stream flowing from the pond, or it my be raindrops touching the surface of the pond, or it might be .....)
