If the two of you mesh well and the communication is good, then the massage is the key to the treasure chest.
If the two of you aren't clicking that well, she's not going to let you give her a massage.
Massages are a great prelude to sex too.
Think about it. You're now all loosened up and relaxed. Plus, the massage has pre-fired all of those little pleasure neuro-transmitters.

And of course it can lead to sex, but doesn't need to. I have often given massages to my significant other, just because. And when I am going out with a new woman, I will often give a massage, and NOT expect sex.
But you know what happens don't you? If we don't end up in bed that date, I can almost guarantee it will happen the next time.
The important part I find is not to expect sex or let "your hand slip". It builds trust, and desire.
