Nope never again. Did that during my marriage and pretty much had the same experience as the woman in OP's message. Hard lesson to learn but one that sticks once learned. From now on it will have to be Yours, Mine, Ours.

Absolutely not. for that very reason you stated. In fact, having been married and now divorced, I would not even have a joint account with a spouse. That is just my preference. I have 4 young children to protect. With a legal spouse, at least there is some recourse in the event of a divorce but with a BF/GF/SO on the account and no legal ties that bind...well you're out XXX amount of money.

I did that once and once only. He didn't take the money, but he set up several large automatic payments to pay his personal bills. One month, after I had the ONLY NSF in my life, I closed the account (after paying the negative balance), set up my own account and he moved out. The fight we had over this was not pretty.

What if they already had plenty of joint expenses together and were pretty much married excpet for the piece of paper.

That's a bad idea for two unmarried people no matter how I look at it, even if there is a wedding date set. A joint account makes some sense under those circumstances, but to expose all of your funds at that point seems a little too risky.
