But remember Granholm had to live under the Bush administration which was to encourage outsourcing and job loss. Any governor would been able to do nothing.....

II don't buy that, the rest of the states have had to live under the same administration and many of them have done just fine, our problems lie with our government. It wasn’t Bush's policies that made VW decide to open a plant in TN instead of MI

Very good point. But there are other things that make Michigan less desirable.

Higher energy costs - winter snow - militant unions - high drop out rate - big three competition - etc, etc

Let alone our high taxes and stupid government for making it a hostile busines environment.

Our state definitely has some issues, beyond what you mentioned we also have a crumbling infrastructure, no reliable mass transit… all things that make the state unattractive to new businesses. On the flip side…

We have abundant natural resources, some of the best colleges in the country. MSU is one of the top veterinary colleges in the country. We graduate some of the best and brightest minds from our colleges. Michigan is home to the only U.S. Olympic Education Center where young athletes can train for the Olympics while finishing their education, both High School and College. We are surrounded by the Great Lakes and we have some of the most beautiful scenery in the country, we could become a major tourist attraction again.

Winters may be cold and snowy but at least we’re not getting blown away by hurricanes or shaken into the ocean. We don’t have to worry about running out of fresh water any time soon. We have everything we need around us to make this state great again and move away from the dependence on manufacturing to being service/technology based.

We need to work on revamping our government, starting November 4th. Half the House is up for reelection and it's time to start cleaning that particular house. The recall of Dillon helps, it puts the rest of the politicians on alert it could be them next. They need to get a clue and make Michigan competitive with Ohio and Indiana tax wise. Right now both of those states are blowing us away. We need to find a way to keep the best and brightest in the state instead of just educating them.

militant unions? ROFL...at least us in the unions have a little bit more security then our friends that aren't in a union. I am glad for my union!
Winter snow? More than half our states have snow...some FAR more than us....snow is an asset to michigan as much as I hate it.
President Bush hasn't made our governor do all the things she's done.
Pfffffft...get rid of them all and start from scratch...that's what I do when I screw up...start over.

How can they bring in jobs with an under educated workforce?

Jennifer Granholm did not cause the big three to fail or outsource. Somethings are bigger than state level. This is one of them.

Very true, but we can blame Granholm and the rest of the politicians for not seeing what was happening in our state with the manufacturing industry and making things more attractive to service/tecnology based industries. They basically did nothing while Rome burned. Granholm herself stated that NAFTA gave us the 'SHAFTA'

They had one heck of a chance last October to make us competitive and they didn’t nor have they did anything towards that since then.

I'm voting for Obama even though I have been a Repulican all my life. I don't care if he is black. God created us all as equals. What does color really mean anyway? Obama IS a Christian for all of you who don't know. He is a man that speaks from the heart and has done so much for his community in his life. He could have had a different lifestyle right from college but chose to help his community instead. I really feel that McCain is going bonkers. He changes his campaigning constantly just to satisfy the wants of the people. You will see it tonight in the debate that he is changing his venue once again. What would happen if Palin became our president? She would have to rely on everyone in her cabinet because she knows nothing about foreign policy or much of anything else. Yes, she knows how to be a soccer Mom and can take care of a six pack. Is that what this country needs? I think not. McCain wants to take 1.4 trillion out of Medicare. What will happen to the all of our retired people that can't afford to live now on their social security? We will be in that same position some day. Privatation of social security is not what we need. We need someone that will look to the future of our country, keep us out of war, create new jobs, work on the economy, clean up the auto industry to get Michigan rolling again, clean up NAFTA, giving us the choice for health insurance and the list goes on.

Our country is going to HELL in a hand basket right now. Bush had 8 years to make it better and it hasn't happened.

The candidates are promising us the MOON right now which is what every candidate does. Will we get what they say we will? I think not. They all have a good line but can they "walk the talk"?

Do you remember when Perot was running. He said that we would be hearing that "sucking sound". He was right!

We need a BIG CHANGE IN THE BIG HOUSE right now and I believe that I'm chosing the lesser of two evils.

the last i checked the meaning of the word "christian" is derived from believers in christ...i surely thought muslims were of the old testament variety, believing that christ is yet to come...any of you guys remember engler?...the people in michigan voted in the 6 % sales tax in lieu of property tax increase...what a joke, anyone's taxes still the same 12 years later?...grandholm got in office with her famous "change" tatics...she changed everything alright, from bad to worse...obama is not only inexperienced, i'll state again, he is not a christian and doesn't even salute our flag...m2c

Obama IS a Christian for all of you who don't know.

A Christian who approves of late term abortions??? OK, so now I'm confused as to what a Christian really is. I could care less if he promised me a million dollars if I vote for him. Any Christian who thinks it's OK to allow a living baby to die from neglect/malnutrition/dehydration/etc. all wrapped up in a towel, deserves to be burned alive for the rest of eternity in hell.
So yea, go ahead and vote for your Christian, like the most of Michigan is going to do. But each and every vote is saying "Yes, allow these babies to die horrible deaths. I still love you Obama" Just goes to show where people's priorities lie. In the wallet... Did we all forget what it means to honorable, respectable, and to cherish life above all else? I guess we did Michigan.

So all Obama supporters are baby killers. hmmmmmm...that seems like a fair view of others, as well as a very Christian attitude. Glad I am agnostic, I couldn't handle all that angst and self righteousness. People are welcome to label others however they chose, it says more about themselves then about those they label.

What I find hypocritacal are those, such as McCain, that profess that abortion is babying killing, yet support capital punishment (killing adults) . I guess killing full functioning adults is okay, but not a fetus that can not live outside on its own. Life you can kill, non-life you can't - now that makes complete sense - up is down, left is right, polluting is call clear skies, estate tax is called death , take away my rights under the Patriot act - how Orwellian " war is peace, freedom is slavery, ignorance is strength".

You know, I’ve been sitting here trying to think of a way to say what needs to be said in a manner that wouldn’t offend anyone. There is no way and my Gram said, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.”

We’ll just have to agree to disagree. But there is one thing I would like to share. Most of my friends have degrees, many on the graduate and doctoral levels. They are leaving in droves…not because they can’t find jobs but because they are tire of fighting against the same mentality that is going to keep emerging technologies from moving to Michigan in the first place. Michigan is beautiful; it has one of the highest ranked universities in the country, but is the most polarized area in the nation and the average person has a high school diploma, maybe.

How could biochemical companies, software development firms, renewable energy based companies…you get my drift move to a place that is still debating whether global warming is real?

We need to wake up collectively and I mean fast! Stop buying into the divisive techniques of the bourgeoisie and fight for the future of our children (well nieces and nephews).

Or else….the only choice Michigan will have left is to sell the water.

Flawed but fun.....what a great post. I guess I'll apply for a job at the Ministry of Information, perhaps I'll be able to sneak some truth in..

It is so funny (and this time I mean funny ha ha) that people think it possible to be both pro life and pro war.

Apparently, you can't find the difference in a helpless, defenseless child and a serial killer?
Whew... no comment needed.

and yes, if you support a person who supports killing defenseless babies, then yes, you are no better than he is.
PS, I never said I was Christian, nor do I profess to be religious in any way. But I do know right from wrong. I do know that setting a baby on a table wrapped up in a cloth, and allowing it to die, is wrong. Unfortunately, there are many more like you who just don't give a damn. Go ahead, support and vote for Obama in 2008. It only shows where your priorities lie and the type of person you are. I fully realize that Obama will be our next President. But I surely wouldn't tell people, or admit to supporting him. Why would I align myself with such a person? Why would I want people to know that I could care less about those babies? Have you no shame?

People are welcome to label others however they chose, it says more about themselves then about those they label.

Let's see then:

very Christian attitude
angst and self righteousness
I find hypocritacal

You do seem to label people quite alot. So I fail to see why you would put yourself down. Whatever... I really don't expect to see much intelligence coming from forum posts.

a fetus that can not live outside on its own. Life you can kill, non-life you can't

Plus, you are not very well informed. These are fully developed, living, able to live, but allowed to die on some table, alone, unattended, neglected..... BABIES. These are not just a fetus dude. I find it hard to believe that anyone can find that appealing and worthy of support. But apparently, I'm wrong, which you have clearly demonstrated.
Plus these are NOT "full functioning adults". They are mistakes of nature, they have developed into something that even****oaches would rid of there society, but you wish to keep them? Bahh.... pointless debating with such a person....

Unlike my last post that was addressing a comment, not the poster, this is addressed to the poster. I am not addressing you in my posts, I am addressing a point of view that is expressed in the forum, nothing personal, it's not about you, it's about the idea that is being expressed. And, yes I need to put the your comment in quotes so that people understand what I am taking about. Don't read anything else into it!

FYI - the comments in my post were addressing the pro-life movement and abortion in general, if you are part of that so be it, if not that's fine too. Read the comments for what they are, and don't read into them that they are about you.

Google didn't have a problem filling their ranks when they opened in Ann Arbor, nor would any other tech industry. What talent couldn't be found in this state would follow the jobs into Michigan as they did into Silicon Valley in California. Having outsiders come into the state will help in changing the way we veiw our world.

Your right about the mentality, especially here in SE Michigan, it doesn't bode well for our corner of the state, but each person is responsible for changing the way they think.

I've been biting my tongue regarding some of the postings here so I'll take dtowndolls grams (and my grammas too) advice and not say anything other than stick to topic and follow the rules of debate, the first being attack the topic not the person. We have a good thread going here about the issues Michigan is facing and what we can do about changing things. It is going to take educated open minded people, at the government level, business level and worker bee level to turn things around here.

Doesn't matter to me. He never had my vote. I'd tell him to kiss my ass, but he'd probably break a hip bending down. Then I'd feel bad.

I am not a fan of the new McCain, I did support him 8 years ago in his run for president. But I will never support a candidate that ignores our state and the troubles we are in. Think about it, when he is in office and their is an issue that pits the Michigan's interest vs another states interests, why would he support us, he already wrote us off.

Michigan needs a leader both in the President and the Governor of our state. We do have great Universities (great medical, engineering, teacher, science, etc ), talented people that want a job where they can showcase their talents, beautiful surroundings, lots of fresh water, etc. But we lack leadership and bi-partisan cooperation.

Unions have their hearts in the right place but they need to change with the times. They need to work for fair wages, recognize that pay grades need to exist based on skills, not protect that bad worker, be a partner with management, etc. I know they are doing better on all fronts, they need to keep it going.

"I'll take dtowndolls grams (and my grammas too) advice and not say anything "
My late mother's advice also. I wish she was here. I would vote for her. That woman had a lot of wisdom in her frail body. Honestly, I would rather read these opinions that voice my own. I'll be deciding up to the last minute for sure while I gather the facts.

In my op, McCain didn't look very good in the last debate. He filled the stage with words.....that I have heard before.
So did Obama. But, he IS a more eloquent speaker.

yep lhl, he does have a certain karma about him...they both sounded like a couple of liars to me...i never said i thought mccain was a great candidate, just that obama has no experience, does not salute our flag, and is not a christian...whereas mccain served our country, proclaims to be a christian man, and has if nothing else more life experience...it is a hard choice this election....lol, like between a rock and a hard place
