There is a lot of good information here except it's not very practical for the modern world.
Armies seldom go into pitched battles anymore and there are few kingdoms for an upwardly ambitious individual to worm his way into anymore.
In today's world, most people advance by changing jobs and moving to a new company rather that competeing for a higher position with co-workers. Although, I'm sure that sort of thing still happens.

If anything, a lot of this probably applies to corporations which compete with each other for market share with a particular product . I'd suggest a look at the conquests of Emperor, Bill Gates the Great.

Don't outshine?
Use bait?
Don't trust your friends?
Indeed, have no friends?

What "powerful" doctrine is this? That you would be a dull fishermen with no friends?
Another American CD Philosophy. A bit like Obectivism, only people are prepared to buy this.

This was interesting, I see it a lot in the companies I work for because they are number driven environments. These people do VERY well in number driven environments where companies tend not to pay so much attention to how you do your job but the final result. These laws are often accepted as "management style".

I have quit a few jobs over this stuff. A lot of it is psychological harassment. No job is worth what psychological harassment can do to you going through it long term.

These 48 rules are IMO a "toxic" short cut to success or survival. They are so toxic that the first person they make sick is he/she who practices them. No way to real happiness on this earth, doing a deal with the "devil". Indeed, people who act this way are sooner or later "revealed" and avoided like the Plague.

Plus this has nothing to do with capitalism.

There are more intelligent "strategies" that by creating win-win situations they actually serve the person w/o hurting the others. Plus they have far better "aura".

Life is not war. Neither is real work. Or dating. Many people such them as such, that is true, but that is no reason to follow their dark and miserable "take" on reality.

I totally agree!!!!

This behavior is toxic and it's grounds for a lawsuit.

Their reputation isn't so hot once they've cost their company a chunk of change. I think more people should sue over it. It's the only way to make companies wake up that this is damaging and there is no business case for it.

I've seen a lot of these kind of ideals in "The Art of War". For those of you saying "this is horrible" you've gotta remember not to take information and tactics like this completely literally.

#7, for instance. You don't need to say that you did EVERYTHING, but "My associates and I", or something similar puts more focus on you than them. You're not omitting thier effort, but you're putting yourself in the driver's seat, so to speak.

You don't wanna live by this sort of thing; but putting it into actions when you're plotting somethig anyways is a prudent course of action.

Im reading this book right now at the moment and im at law 41. I would suggest this book for sure to anyone. Im sure alot of what has happend in this book from along time ago can be used in todays era. Im sure the same rules apply in human nature. Thats what this book mainly deals with. The human nature of people.

I like this book alot and i would say its all on your perspective when you read it.

I think I may have to pick up that book, sounds like a nice read for developing fictional societies.

Law 1

Never Outshine the Master

Always make those above you feel comfortably superior. In your desire to please or impress them, do not go too far in displaying your talents or you might accomplish the opposite – inspire fear and insecurity. Make your masters appear more brilliant than they are and you will attain the heights of power.

I think I fail at this law a lot, I don't even hold back on talent, always going full force with everything I got (not to show off, more for my satisfaction). Might explain why people tend to be intimidated by me even though I don't act or appear intimidating.

Damn, that's the longest post I've ever bothered to read! But it is provocative. And yes, I see merit in several of these despite the evil undertones in some of the explanations:

Always Say Less than Necessary
Win through your Actions, Never through Argument
Isolation is Dangerous
Master the Art of Timing
Plan All the Way to the End
In Victory, Learn when to Stop
Preach the Need for Change, but Never Reform Too Much at Once
Enter Action with Boldness
Assume Formlessness
Avoid Stepping into a Great Man’s Shoes
Re-Create Yourself
even this one: Avoid the Unhappy and Unlucky

Wooooowwwwwww....

I suppose if you want to live in a world where you're constantly affraid of your own shadow, and suspicious of every puff of wind, it would be a good thing.

Only one more thought comes to mind:

It sounds like a list for 48 rules borne of paranoia.

the laws have been used since the dawn of man and they work even today.because even though we strive to think we are unlike the animals ,we are not. and these rules are just a civilized version of basic animal instinct.kill or be killed, survival of the fittest.use them and you should grow material wealth but that is all.

because even though we strive to think we are unlike the animals ,we are not.

TRUE! But, you have three options:

1) Deny your base instincts and struggle with them all your life.
2) Embrace your base instincts fully, and live with the consequences that it will lead too.
3) Use them, as a driving force to get to where you wish to be, but keep them under control.

Option #3 is one I've come up with on my own in my time on this planet. Alas, black and white thinkers never see #3. ~sigh~ And frankly, those that would by into the original list have decided to take #2.

I'll say it again laughing inside...

Ouch! OP, you've so thoroughly described a boss I had once (or maybe more than one)...he followed this strategy so closely that I'm certain he must have read this very book and decided to make it his bible for negotiating the corporate world...And, yes, he was and is a full-blown psychopath/sociopath (and alcoholic), and made the work place a misery for everyone...Eventually, it was the CUSTOMERS who took him down, the group of people he'd completely overlooked and under-estimated in his game of climbing the corporate ladder... I must say, however, unfortunately the corporate management world really IS this way, whether most of us want to believe/acknowledge it or not. I actually read statistics (from a psychology of management course I took a few years ago) that the corporate management field is more weighted with psycho/socio-pathic personalities than even the prisons. Think of the corporate leaders exposed in the Enron scandal, the mining disaster in Indonesia, and the current bank failures, to name just a few...self interest gone WILD.

Its interesting to note that O'bama follows these guidelines. Notice laws numbered, 3,4,6,7,12,17,20,25,28,29,31,45, and 38 and take special note of numbers 27,32, 34 and 37.

Cool! A basic manual on how to be a successful sociopath.

It reads very similar to Niccolo Machiavelli's advice in "The Prince", with an added dash of Sun Tzu's "Art of War".

Scarey to read, scarier to find someone actively practising.

Reads a bit like Peter Mandelson's strategy book

This was very entertaining--thanks for sharing it. I never seek reading material like this out, so it's unlikely that I would have found it otherwise. Thanks again! :)

Law 3

Conceal your Intentions

Anyone who really does buy into this stuff wouldn't admit it anyway, I guess they'd present moral outrage or perhaps even a logical rebuttal, in order to prevent anyone from thinking he/she have an advantage, as well as preventing anyone else from gaining an advantage.

Mona - Religion is built off of deception, hate, and fear.

Deception - You are a bad person and unless you follow us and do what we say you will be condemned to hell for all eternity.

Hate - Those who think differently from you, you should kill!

Fear - If you don't obey our religion than you are doomed to be tormented and tortured for ALL eternity.

And yet, religion has complete control over you... hmm...
