I've never done well with the what I call the captain Ahab style. I wrote a song about it called "you don't have to be a brain to be boss, just an A#*hole"

I worked in construction for 13 years and worked for a number of different foremen. The ones who treated me with respect got the most from me. I had one old-school foreman who thought the way to keep us on our toes was to constantly criticize our work. No matter what we did, it was never enough or good enough. I'm real conscientious and will put up with a lot of sh*t, (I was the first woman in my local, I was *used* to putting up with sh*t) but even I got a bad attitude. The result? DECREASED productivity due to resentment and standing around griping.

The foreman who treated me with respect ,allowed me to use my skills, and acknowledged it when I did a good job - I'd bend over backwards for him. If he needed a push on something, we didn't mind putting out a little extra to get the job done on time. His expectations were reasonable and he treated you like an intelligent human being. He listened to your ideas and implemented them when it was practical. He was my model of a good foreman.
