Work dressing code and dresing style depending on your work

There is no dress code where I work, however I do wear a shirt and tie. Most of the other workers go for the smart casual look. My previous employment required a shirt and tie - so I have plenty of them. When visitors arrive they usually assume I'm the boss (which I'm not) - although my boss does wear a shirt and trousers he never wears a tie.

That said, if I know I'm going to be doing something that's going to get me dirty I'll wear a pair of old jeans and an old shirt.

I tend not to care much, I am currently unemployed but if I had to wear the uniform I would, it wouldn't bother me. I think in most cases I'd go with black trousers and a white shirt and tie, dressed smartly, saying that I tend to dress that way often, even when I go out.

i work for tesco so the uniform is compulsory, the main reason for us wearing a "uniform" is so that customers can identify us as a member of staff. and its saves trashing our own clothes.

I used to be in the Airforce where dress code is very specific, almost down to the colour of underwear lol. It didn't bother me - dressing in morning was easy.

As a civilian I always used to wear a suit for work, normally a skirt suit but occasionally trousers. As soon as I put my clothes on in the morning my mind set changed into business mode. When I worked in H & S wearing a suit gave me confidence I did not always feel. I was seen as a professional and acted like one.

I chose to downgrade my job due to stress and gradually my dress code has downgraded. My first admin job was for directors so suit - suited. Then I worked for Council in an 'open' office ie we were open to the public but admin only had a 'smart dress code' - I was out of place in a suit and missed it. I lost the jacket but everything else stayed the same so guess I was overdressed compared to others.

Then I moved to a closed office - not much of a dress code and over past two years I started dressing like everyone else, even wearing tidy jeans this year. It feels odd. I barely dress any differently from work and casual.

I preferred having definite work clothes and non work clothes but it was always my choice of style colour etc.

I wore a uniform to school . When I left school I joined Royal Mail where I was also required to wear a uniform. I understand the reasons why some jobs require you wear a uniform and have no problem complying with uniform regulation. The job I'm in now doesn't have a uniform as such but I'm required to wear black trousers and black collared shirt and black shoes [well I suppose that is more or less a uniform isn't It ?] That's pretty much the case regardless of what company you work for. The only real difference is the colour of tie you wear which varies from black - grey - silver - red etc.. .

I take pride in my appearance , even more-so when going to work.
I spend a good ten minutes polishing my shoes every night . My trousers and shirt are always clean and pressed. In the summer I normally wear a blazer / suit . Winter I throw my three quarter length cashmere Cromby overcoat over the top and my black leather gloves.Bath and a shave and off I go .

I had a cold last week and was feeling under the weather.I went to work without having a shave and about half a dozen people commented on it and told me I was looking rough [thanks for that , lol] I just wasn't on the ball so to speak. For me personally , Its important that I look the part in order to be the part if that makes any sense ? I'm looking people up and down all night as part of my duties and having to judge them on their appearance so would feel a little hypocritical and my position/ argument could be weakened if I was looking like a park tramp.

Us hospital secretaries are office-based but in case we need to run errands to the main hospital clinics/ward the main stipulation is no jeans and sensible footwear.

The thing is we spend most of our time working and why not wear something which we feel happy wearing?
I really have a problem with this.

It really isn't important as personality comes across in a person's manner rather than clothes. Make up, permitted jewellery and a smiling and friendly non-wingeing dispostion are far more important that the latest or designer fashion, in my very humble opinion.

I don't have a uniform at work but depending on what my day is holding for me depends on how I dress. Every day is different at work. If I know I have loads of meetings etc then I'll dress a bit smarter but if I'm on the floor at work mucking in & no appointments then I'll wear jeans & pumps or something similar & comfortable.

I would wear a uniform if I had to, doesn't bother me in the slightest.

I would want the uniform to be purple, pink or black! I wouldn't really like to wear an ugly uniform and by golly Ive seen some horrors before!

I really wouldnt mind working in a place with a uniform. I tend to buy things I like in twos or three anyway.... just so I dont have to make so many choices. A friend did tell me a guy we knew had mentioned it was odd I seemed to wear the same top all the time. But if that had been a uniform.... it wouldnt be given a second thought unless there was a hygiene issue.

I cant imagine being bothered about dressing in a way I wouldnt do so in my own time, and especially so if my career depended on it. As others have said, you can always find so many ways to accessorise an outfit or.... just let your personality shine!!! Also, were you ever worried about what you wore on an evening out...? Until you were with friends having a few drinks (or not) and lots of laughs... then, who cared?

People must think I wear the same black trousers just about every day, in that case! In truth, I must have at least 10 pairs...& put on a clean pair every morning.

i wear a uniform every day, i save a fortune on not having to buy a work wardrobe, they replace it regularly, and its needed in the line of work im in, wearing my own clothes to the place i work wouldnt be very appropriate!

and you dont have to worry about what youre wearing the next day - black tro's white shirt, big boots, sorted!!!
