| Our New President Posted: 11/6/2008 6:08:23 PM | I am hopeful that he chooses Colin Powell for secretary of state. I cannot think of a better candidate for this particular position. I too think Powell would be a good choice but, I don't think Powell wants a full time job right now. Of course, I'm not talking about the typical nine to five job as Secretary of State is far more of a commitment. I expect Powell will serve Obama as a key advisor on many fronts in Obama's administration but, he won't take a cabinet post. I wish he would. One hold-over that we can expect is Robert Gates as Secretary of Defense.
It's posssible we find out tomorrow who the Secretary of the Treasury will be. Obama is having a meeting with his economic advisors and they might decide who this guy will be.
| Our New President Posted: 11/6/2008 6:21:59 PM | ^^^^ I dunno. From what I have been hearing, Colin is interested in perhaps secretary of education. But whether it be secretary of state or of education, the commitment factor is huge.... it becomes your life and maybe perhaps he has had enough of the political life......I was thinking that Hillary may get a cabinet post. Who knows what kind of negotiations go on behind closed doors....... but in all honesty I believe the country as a whole, has had enough of the Clintons....... | |
| Our New President Posted: 11/6/2008 6:36:17 PM | | Powell as the Secretary of Education is an interesting option. Before I read your post, I was wondering when we are going to hold the Secretary of Education accountable for the failures of our education system. We continue to lag behind many countries on this front. I believe that our unimpressively educated population may be amongst the biggest risks to our national security. | |
| Our New President Posted: 11/6/2008 7:04:16 PM | | ^^^Richardson is amongst the most qualified. He has an impressive resume in foreign affairs. I'm just not convinced that a cabinet post wouldn't be considered a demotion to him. | |
| Our New President Posted: 11/6/2008 7:13:07 PM | | Richardson would be an intelligent choice. As a latino, he'd be a great follow-up to Rice. The Secretary of State is considered to be our face to the world. He would give credence to our diverse nation. I would like to see him take the cabinet post. | |
| Our New President Posted: 11/6/2008 9:16:56 PM | I was wondering when we are going to hold the Secretary of Education accountable for the failures of our education system. IMHO..... I do not hold the government responsible for the US lagging behind in education. Parents and our society as a whole is (IMHO) who is responsible. We have good schools and devoted teachers...... you cannot force a child to learn, ( encourage and guide, yes. Force, no) they have got to want to learn and with most families ( those that are still intact) where both parents are working full time, it is quite difficult to stay 100% on top 100% of the time to provide the children with the necessary guidance and encouragement to learn.......
This seems to be the core problem. We are or have started to hold goverment responsible for everything...... individual responsibility and accountability is waning.
Carry on ... | |
| Our New President Posted: 11/6/2008 9:20:37 PM | | ^ darlin, you have evidently not been anywhere near a teacher forced to deal with "No child left behind" which has been hindering every single teacher for the last 8 years. We will be paying for that in a serious dumbing down of our elementary school kids for another generation... :eyeroll: | |
| Our New President Posted: 11/6/2008 9:24:22 PM | The lagging you speak about goes back a lot more then 8 years. This is something that is about 2 decades slowly in the making.
So you say society and parents hold zero responsibility ? It is the governments sole responsibility to teach our children ?
What ever happened to " it takes a village" ?
| Our New President Posted: 11/6/2008 9:27:11 PM | ^didn't you hear? The main villager who saw to it that the village was raising a child got beat by a guy from Chicago who wasn't schooled there.
^^ glad you know exactly where to pin the excuse for failure Teach'. In MHO, if we have to sift all the way back to a national thing, something is wrong at the local level first. And it doesn't get any more local than the parents and the teacher who are responsible for teaching the children within their rooms.
| Our New President Posted: 11/6/2008 10:25:59 PM | Dave: I was totally feeling what you said in message 66. I too feel that the parents are responsible for educating our nation. They have to take care of their own just as Obama said during his historic Philadelphia speech on racism--
<div class='quote'>So what to do? For African Americans, "binding our particular grievances" over such issues as better access to healthcare and good schools "to the larger aspirations of all Americans -- the white woman struggling to break the glass ceiling, the white man who's been laid off, the immigrant trying to feed his family. And it means taking full responsibility for our own lives -– by demanding more from our fathers, and spending more time with our children, and reading to them, and teaching them that while they may face challenges and discrimination in their own lives, they must never succumb to despair or cynicism; they must always believe that they can write their own destiny."(my bolded text was a direct challenge to the African American community...namely the absent fathers)
Obama isn't in denial about the depths of our failing eductaion.
Amusinglisa: Your point about no-child-left-behimd is extremely valid. We have an education policy that teaches a "test" rather than educating our children on many levels
Cncgandolf: What's your take on the how future of our education system should go? I respect your knowledge and experience. Whom do you think would make for an exquisitely effective Secretary of Education? Please enlighten us.

| Our New President Posted: 11/6/2008 11:22:55 PM | cncgandolf,
You seem awfully positive about what caused the financial meltdown. Odd that I haven't heard that theory from any of the real economists who are busy analyzing the problem. You also make strong accusations (e.g. the "lies" and "warmongering" of the McCain campaign) without citing even a single example. That's almost the definition of propaganda--the Daily Kos might have a spot for you.
| Our New President Posted: 11/6/2008 11:34:22 PM | "you cannot force a child to learn, ( encourage and guide, yes. Force, no) they have got to want to learn"
While I do agree with you that students need supportive families, there are other factors (and as a single working professional mom I am offended by the correlation of working parents to lack of support.) First you have to teach to the child's learning style. Our school system is still teaching to the learning style of a couple of generations ago. They do not teach to the child who has been learning by discovery and deduction in media rich environments prior to starting kindergarten. We diagnose a high percentage as ADD or ADHD when the truth is that they are bored.
Also, uou do have to provide an environment conducive to learning. When several students are so disruptive to the class for whatever reason things get to a point where those that want to learn cannot be taught because the disrupters are stealing their educational opportunity.
| Our New President Posted: 11/6/2008 11:47:08 PM | "Odd that I haven't heard that theory from any of the real economists who are busy analyzing the problem. "
You're not listening to the right economists. You're listening to the Republican and corporate puppets. I have heard it.
As to "real economists" ... I have the right credentials to speak on this topic. You can start with the fact that I have a doctorate in business following a lifelong fascination with the link between cultural and social development and cultural economics.... in that the study of economics has been a lifelong fascination for me and I do have the education in it to back up my comments, I am a real economist. Additionally, I teach strategic management to MBA candidates. I've discussed the topic for a week of every term for years.
Included in my doctoral courses was a lovely course in Washington DC with the economists who teach the new congress people the realities of our government finances and taxation system. I've had an inside view of it. Very fascinating. Hmmmm... actually, you remind me that since our taxation system is a social engineering system that Bush's welfare for the rich and Arnie's announcement today to cover our CA debts with sales taxes to the CA middle class (poor have no money to spend to pay more tax and wealthy just buy out of state) are lovely examples of the Republican social engineering ... which isn't quite the same as socialism but also isn't free market.
| Our New President Posted: 11/7/2008 12:51:01 AM | Don't stop now gandolf. You sound prophetic. Pay your due taxes. When the money-holders have 90% of the money--they should pay 90% of the taxes. But who am I to relegate those tax sharers to their obligation.
Call it socialism; others call it justified.
| Our New President Posted: 11/7/2008 5:16:19 AM | All spealing a$$ide, I did not vote. For the first time in 32 years. I would have voted for Barack McCain and Joe Palin. Obamas' oration, Johns' experience, Joes' experience, Saras' Pitbull with lipstick. If the 4 could have been combined I would have voted for them. I wanted a Afro American man or woman Pres. because it is way about time. Obama is the Afro American JFK. I pray he does not suffer the same fate. The best thing is we have a democratic congress and Pres. Sh@t will get done! It remains to be seen if it is good sh@t . I have the honor to remain, >mak^o>, future King of the World. | |
| Our New President Posted: 11/7/2008 9:03:28 AM | The media was overwhelmingly slanted towards Obama and overcritical of McCain/Palin so I'm not surprised that Obama won.Obama's past relationships were sadly not considered by the masses, including his aunt living here illegally in public housing. I for one did not buy the hype shoved at me everyday by the media but apparantly the majority bought it,I just hope he lives up to his promises and does a good job.
Side note:I respect the will of the people and I wish the "no on prop 8" people would also.
| Our New President Posted: 11/7/2008 10:08:08 AM | ^^^Wow. You have some huge anger issues. I can't tell if this is really what the problem is with you, or if you're just hellbent on beating the cra*p out of any old person, but it's gotten ridiculous.
You will never get anyone to concede to your side when you keep spitting in their face and knocking them down. If this is your version of reaching across the aisle, you suck at it.
| Our New President Posted: 11/7/2008 12:05:03 PM | ^^No, you aren't. You're a bully. In the "right here and now" and you're taking that anger out on anyone and everyone you choose out of a sense of entitlement. The very things you've been screaming about for the last several days. And yes, screaming is what you're doing.
You're using this as an excuse and it shows.
| The New President Posted: 11/7/2008 12:21:14 PM | black jesus gonna save us all...

| Our New President Posted: 11/7/2008 1:38:24 PM | ^^^We've heard enough about your rights, Bully.
Bill O'Reilly's an azz. Difference between you two is he knows it. He pisses me off on a regular basis too.
