| Old TV Shows Posted: 11/16/2008 11:19:45 AM | Man dont get me started on this.
I love, love old TV shows. The TV show on today are beyond horrible in my opinion.
I love nearly every show made before 1968. Now those were the classics. The list is too big but I liked all the old sitcoms, music/variety shows, dramas, cop shows, westerns, secret agent shows, sci fi/fantasy show.
There are very few shows made past that time that I can really enjoy.

The first few years of All in the Family.... who can forget Archie upstairs flushing his toilet?
toonsmith, I think one of my favorite episodes of 'All In The Family' was the one in which Archie and Meathead were trapped together in the cellar of the house when no one else was home. I loved that episode; the two went from their regular back-and-forth arguments to (after a few bottles of alcohol that was stored nearby ) Archie reminiscing about his childhood...and Meathead (Mike) suddenly seeing him in a different light, and being able to empathize with why Archie was the way he was. That particular show was a great piece of writing.
(LOL...I also recall in one show when Archie was being interviewed, he was asked how he would help to prevent hijackings on commercial airflights; he said the solution was simple: simply give each passenger a gun as they boarded the plane. That way the hijackers wouldn't stand a chance.
Oh, and Mork and Mindy: it suffered from terrible writing ideas (esp. in the final couple of seasons, and after they introduced Jonathan Winters - great actor, terrible role), but Robin Williams was an absolute gem to behold. As I've said before of him, he's sheer comic genius. I loved watching M&M. *Shazbot!*

| Old TV Shows Posted: 11/16/2008 12:26:47 PM | Pam Dawber was very easy on the eyes. What a beautiful woman.
I agree that Mork & Mindy had terrible writing ideas. The network suits didn't help matters much with switching time slots and tinkering with the original concept. I think it hit rock bottom with the episode with Raquel Welch. The whole thing with Jonathan Winters was DOA the moment it aired. (But Jonathan is truly a comic genius despite this insanely scripted nightmare)
There have been ideas that you would have thought would have succeeded. Mel Brooks attempted a spin on Robin Hood and his merry men with 'When Things Were Rotten" that was..... well, pretty rotten? The networks even tried a santitized version of Animal House that had no laughs whatsoever?
One of the best ways to explore old TV shows.... Youtube!
Type in an obscure title and you just may be suprised? I typed in "Shields and Yarnell" the variety show with the mimes in the 70's that I got a kick of? Bingo, there she be!
Same with an old BBC kid's program from 1970 called "The Double Deckers" where kids hung out in their clubhouse that happened to be an old english double decker bus. I'll bet very few remember that odd little show. LOL
Dick Van Dyke actually gave the cult comedian Andy Kaufman a start on his variety show where Andy kept upstaging him for laughs. It was great stuff.
Bewitched is also a feel good no brainer programmer. My favorite part is the nosy next door neighbor who keeps witnessing magic and she can't ever convince her husband and ends up looking like a loon?
One nice added touch that the cable network does.... commercials from that period? We spent just as much time visually digesting those as well....strange to instantly remember them when they come on? "Please, Don't Squeeze The Charmin"..... the little western chuck wagon that runs through the kitchen with the dog chasing it.... Joy to the World sung by a choir of Coke drinkers..."
sings..... "memories!"

| Old TV Shows Posted: 11/16/2008 4:39:30 PM | Courtship of Eddie's Father... that was a fave of mine... I loved the theme song and the opening credits. (Sings) "Let me tell you about my best friend!.....
Mad Magazine did a funny parody of this show in their magazine way back when.. it was called "Courtship of Eddie's Fathead" Mad was always pretty funny poking fun at films back then.
You know, the original I Love Lucy was original, funny and timeless... but something was lost without Ricky. I found the later Lucy shows pretty boring? So "I Sorta Love Lucy"?
I think the saddest thing was watching her comeback in the late eighties that only lasted a few weeks. There just wasn't anything funny about a Lucy in her 80's wrestling with an easy chair?
This thread ignited a few old brain cells that contain these television memories. So I'm gonna make something of this trip down memory lane!
I'm gonna start a new blog about old shows... and call it...
I Dream of Jeannie...naked.

| Old TV Shows Posted: 11/22/2008 8:24:05 AM | I Love Lucy (the original cast) Carol Burnett and surprisingly, I haven't seen mentionned: The Honeymooners!!
It would almost be worth getting cable to see these shows again.... nah!

| Old TV Shows Posted: 11/22/2008 9:05:13 AM | TV sucks today, that is why I don't bother having it.
I do have all seven seasons of The Golden Girls on DVD
Personally,I may be the only one that thinks Mork and Mindy sucked, and I could never get into Hogan's Heroes and F troop, as well as Family Affair.
Now anything with Carol Burnett and Bob Newhart is priceless!!
|
| Old TV Shows Posted: 11/22/2008 9:23:41 AM | The Andy Griffith show, as long as Barney was there. It wasn't the same without Barney. Always watched Sanford and Son too. | |
|
| Old TV Shows Posted: 11/22/2008 9:52:08 AM | Somebody else actually remembers Room 222?! I loved that show, especially the leading man, tee hee!
I Love Lucy Bewitched Dragnet Dr. Kildare ( I don't actually think that was the name of the show...but he was the lead character) Father Knows Best Leave it to Beaver My Three Sons Petticoat Junction The Andy Griffith Show (or was it Mayberry RFD...I preferred the original one) I Spy Mission Impossible The original Star Trek

| Old TV Shows Posted: 11/22/2008 11:39:13 AM | Saturday morning cartoon ~ Clutch Cargo.... back in those days, Clutch was the only animated character that I knew of with a moving mouth....
Sunday morning ~ Davey and Goliath.... I can STILL hear Goliath saying "Hey Daaaaaavey" in that deep voice....
|
| Old TV Shows Posted: 11/22/2008 9:10:12 PM | Let's not forget Mannix,The Mod Squad,Then Came Bronson, and oh,we dare not forget the longest running one of them all,Gunsmoke. How about seeing the Beatles on Ed Sullivan when they first came to the U.S.?
And then there was the time when they wanted to get rid of violence on tv and they started in on Bugs Bunny. Now look at the crap the kids have to watch on Saturday mornings.
|
| Old TV Shows Posted: 11/22/2008 9:13:04 PM | | The Andy Griffith Show just was'nt the same when they colorized it.They should have kept Barney, and stayed away from Howard,he was such annoying momma's boy and geek, lol. | |
|
| Old TV Shows Posted: 11/23/2008 6:50:02 AM | There was plenty of TV that I grew up with that I loved at the time, but is cringe-worthy to watch now and simply doesn't stand up anymore. All in The Family is one exception. It's still got an edge 30+ years later, even if not everything it focusses on is as topical as it once was.
Most current TV shows seem pretty horrible to me. I sometimes wonder if the shows are really that bad, or if it's simply that I've seen enough older ones to recognize that the new ones are recycled versions. "Reality TV" is a completely ironic name for what they run now, as it's the least realistic programming that's ever aired.
|
| Old TV Shows Posted: 11/23/2008 7:12:05 AM | Barney , you beat everything you know that ! That's about as mad as Andy got. | |

| Old TV Shows Posted: 11/24/2008 6:26:51 PM | I think it's funny that some actors and actresses became famous from TV shows that really weren't as great as the actors are now.
Can you believe Tom Hanks got his start in that stupid show....what was it called?
|
| Old TV Shows Posted: 11/24/2008 6:53:41 PM | Hi MagE...it was Bosom Buddies, with Peter Scollari as his fellow cross-dressing roommate.
Morgan Freeman got his start ....at least on TV, on the now defunct soap Another World.
|
| Old TV Shows Posted: 11/24/2008 6:57:20 PM | | The Dating Game, and The Newly Wed Game, are a hoot to watch in reruns!! Hard to believe the clothes they wore, let alone the almost subservient manner of some of the women, and the "macho" boasting of some of the men. | |
|
| Old TV Shows Posted: 11/24/2008 7:28:32 PM | | I know Morgan Freeman was on Electric Company also. I didn't know Another World was no longer on...lol...it has been awhile since I've had TV.... | |
|
| Old TV Shows Posted: 11/25/2008 5:51:52 AM | Hi MagE...it has been more than 10 years since Another World was on the air. I loved that show...watched it from 1978 on...whenever I could.
I don't have cable anymore myself, but love to watch the old sitcoms and game shows when I am visiting friends or clients.
This sure has been a fun thread.
|
| Old TV Shows Posted: 11/25/2008 7:46:24 AM | As I've mentioned my most fav is "Golden Girls". There is one episode that has a very, very young George Clooney in it~no gray hair and a baby face.
There is also one episode that has Quinton Tarintino(sp?)in a non-speaking role.
Not too long ago I was talking with someone about the difference from the early "Happy Days" show to the later ones. Kind of dark and risque compared to when it went "pop"
Please tell me I'm not the only one that remembers that!!!!
|
| Old TV Shows Posted: 11/25/2008 7:49:06 AM | nothing like watching gunsmoke and andy griffith.....
those shows then reflected the culture...or tried to influence it in a positive way, often they explored social issues concluding the show with black and white solutions that reflected good moral decisions and character..... Boy do I miss those days!
|
| Old TV Shows Posted: 11/25/2008 8:26:52 PM | | Andy Griffith premiered almost 50 years ago. I think the show remains popular today because it brings people back to a time when life in America was simple and uncomplicated, and the pace of life was slower. IMO much of what is wrong with the world today can be traced back to the loss of small town values and ethics that were so well displayed and promoted in TV shows like Andy Griffith. | |
|
| Old TV Shows Posted: 11/25/2008 9:28:25 PM | Interesting about Happy Days. It was a bit different when it started out.
They were filmed much like a movie then. Fonzie even wore a light blue jacket rather than the famous dark leather jacket. Richie even had an older brother that disappeared in later episodes? They did switch the format in which they were shot for television after a season or two.
It also boggles the mind that Andy Griffith was almost 50 years ago?
Unfortunately... small town values on television turned into Twin Peak territory where "strangeness" reigns supreme.
Dr. Quinn had some pretty good re-occurring characters that you loved to tune into?
We need another Andy Griffith type of show!
