WE cannot be selfish and let depression bite us.WE deserve to be out havign fun..living life to its fullest..beign all we can be. You see if we sit on our a** and hate the world and hate life and our ex or our parents..our boss...or whoever...THEY WIN...NOT US.

I chose to say fuk this...i will not be l ike this anymore..i didnt just do it for my kids..i did it for me..because i love myself..my parents and my kids..enough to not let them watch me get sucked down the drain.

Even if you have a inch of self love..its enough to say i had enough...no more. Always get help...it makes life so much easier havign a support network.

I have been suffering from Depression most of my life. I have hit bottom alot. I have had alot of counseling and it does help. I have diagnosed with having PTSD (Post Tramatic Stress Disorder). This has all made me a very strong person today. I have dealt with my past and I can move on. I do alot of spiritual reading and I read alot of self help books. When I had a nervous breakdown about 5 years ago I wanted to die. My brother told me to turn it all over to GOD and put my life in his hands. I did that and He (GOD) made me well. I still am having some problems and sometimes I think I cannot go on but I just say a prayer and got brings me back to life. Please turn your life over to GOD and let him help you. I know how bad it can get. I am going thru the emotional trauma of just going thru a divorce and I am really hurting, but I know that I cannot let life pass me by. I know I have to pick myself up and move on...
Just remeber GOd is always your answer... Good Luck

There are so many people who suffer from this, me included. A lot of it is mistreated, trouble with your thyroid can cause all the same symtoms and can be detected from a single blood sample. The quick fix for doctors is to put you on meds, and I have tried all of them, NONE of them worked, sure for a few weeks you feel all fine.......then boom, back to the neverending downhill spiral again. I currently take nothing and just deal with it day by day.
I will have this all my life, most days I am a real go getter and life is great, but then you have some days where you just want the world to go away and leave you alone.
I have thought about this a lot and it's funny how a million dollars would cure these feelings for ever!!! Anxiety has a lot to do with I find, if I have a few drinks once in awhile, I feel great. I will never become an alcoholic to cure myself, but I think most of us plagued by this are very sensitive people and worry too much about what other people think of us. I know all the technical reasons why this happens to people and I'm not dismissing those theories at all, but for some of us it's just better to take it a day at a time and find out what it is that brings these feelings on. For me, I am very busy driving my grandma and my mom around town, I am on three committes in the area where I live, I plan all functions and parties for all my family and friends, I run my son to and from school twice a day, I help all my family and friends with various jobs like painting, plumbing, gardening etc. etc. etc.......I could go on for hours here,
but the bottom line is that I do not have time for ME and this is the start of it all. I have to learn to say no to people and take my life back and live it for me again. I know what I must do, but I never will, helping people is what I do and I do it well, so I put myself on the backburner and live with the depression.

this is what nad did. i left the gf, gave her everything said i didn't want anything. gave her the house the whole nine yards and walked away on a journey of self rediscovery!! so far it has been great! met alot of cool people and drank with some even cooler people. now i do what i want, when i want and i don't have to answer to anyone for staying out late, spending obsurd amounts of cash on anything and i think i just dropped 50 grand on a new car!!! keep yer fingers crossed eh!! i found that i turned into something ugly and horrible over the years and decided that enough was enough and that life is way too short to be miserable!!! i am going to go and live my life!

5htp- do a search on Google and read up. I get mine at walmart. I've been off meds for several months now and doing fine. I used to take tryptophan years ago but they took it off the market in the US. 5htp is actually better in raising serotonin than what I took before. Prescription drugs try to do what 5thp can do, but with side effects. I recommend it to people all the time.

Yes.

Excersise works wonders.
Self talk works as well.
If someting you can control is depressing you, like your job, then find another job.

Dont take meds, they will screw you up in ways you won't believe.

Once again, Excersise works wonders.
See how happy the bannana is?

Excersise ...especially walking, can help some people.
Self Talk ,can help some people.
Medication can be harmful, to some people, but it can also be helpful to others. I know people who have been screwed up by it and others, myself included, who are still alive because of it.
Meds should be the final option, I agree, but if nothing else works, you may have to risk them.
I've had " Major" ,all my life, hid it quite well.Started being treated for it about 10 years ago, when it started to get real bad.The first 8 meds had little effect,no did the "cocktails".Five years ago, I lost my wife and home and spent 2 months "Inside".
In sept./o4 ,I started Paxil CR. The Fist thing it did was take me lower than I have ever been.6 weeks of pure hell.I hung in with the help of friends who checked in every day and were there for me.Slowly I began to have good days now and then, then more often.Today I rarely have bad days.Christmas always was a bad time for me and it still affects me,but not to the same degree.
Medication may not help every one and yes in some cases it could do more harm than good.It could even make you take your life. Its a choice that YOU alone must make.
At this time, I'm on a "cocktail " of 2 Paxil CR plus 2 Welbutrin (to control the side effects). My girlfriend loves the side effects.
If you live with the "Darkness", ....never give up. NEVER
Also consider your diet,as it can also affect you greatly in some cases.

I hate to say this but some people need medication if you don't believe that give me your address I'll be right over... Actually it isn't for me it's for one of my other personalities..I don't need drugs I need a lobotomy..or a botlinfrofmy....I have a relative who suffer's from mulitable personalities I really don't know how she got that way we love her dearly it hurts like hell to see someone you love go through that hell in fact it depresses the hell out of me so I use humor to keep me afloat..And if that doesn't work gas does..My relative needs medication but she won't take it and things get pretty weird when my relative is around like when she stayed with me one of her personalities went to the police dept. and told the police I was a serial killer..They watched me for several months it's nice to have body guards..I've been really depressed for the past couple years since my gal passed my heart was broken it's been real rough but the sun is starting to come out now I have two years of beard and hair and soon it will be trimmed my grieving over...(This hair is driving me freaking crazy if I don't cut it I'm going to need medication soon..) Watch some funnies Three Stooges work for me.....Talk about it too everyone gets down at one time or another in their lives...

Depression & Diet

I hope that the following article may offer some new ideas for coping with Depression

NATUROPATHIC TREATMENTS FOR DEPRESSION

Depression may be triggered by tension, stress, a traumatic life event, chemical imbalances in the brain, thyroid disorders, digestive disorders, chronic fatigue and pain, diabetes, nutritional deficiencies, the consumption of sugar, fats, alcohol, cigarette smoking, chocolate, coffee and tea, white flour, mononucleosis, lack of exercise, hypoglycemia, heredity, or allergies. In addition to self help there are medicines and lifestyle changes that can have a very profound affect on the psyche.

Diet:

Dr. Alexander Schauss studied inmates in prisons and found that when dairy and sugar were eliminated from their diets and their prison cells painted pink, that there was much less violent behavior. Food does affect behavior. Food allergies must be ruled out and these are determined most accurately through the vega test method, muscle testing, (the latter two if performed by a skilled practitioner) and the Elisa Blood allergy test.

Limit sugar, alcohol, coffee, tea, additives, chocolate, white flour and fats. This may be the hardest to change, however if you make one change a week or even a month, think how well you will be this time next year! Just Do It! To best control your blood sugar eat legumes or beans every day and concentrate on oats, rye, barley, corn, brown rice, starchy vegetables rather than wheat based products.

Vitamin Supplements:

B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid), B6, B12, folic acid, vitamin C, calcium, magnesium, chromium, zinc and selenium are often found to be deficient in the depressed individual. A good multivitamin containing all the B complexes in 50-100 mg dosage and all the minerals will provide you with these basic components. Look for a good quality multivitamin such as the brands of Eclectic, Sisu, Natural Factors, Bioforce and Flora in the health food store. Remember that you pay for what you get. The better quality supplements are going to work better. I suggest getting capsules whenever you can. They are more easily absorbed.

Essential Fatty Acids:

The omega 3 family of essential fats are crucial for proper functioning of the brain and you can read more about their extreme importance in Udo Erasmus's book " Fats That Heal and Fats That Kill". I suggest the equivalent of 1 tablespoon of fresh organic flaxseed oil per day. This also supports the thyroid and many folks see an increase in energy when they regularly take flaxoil.

Amino Acids:

In Canada it is difficult to purchase the individual amino acids tryptophan and tyrosine that promote the production of serotonin which is the main action of the prozac family of antidepressants. It is important to maintain adequate levels of protein in your diet and if you think you are lacking you may take an amino acid supplement which contains all the amino acids. To determine your protein requirements I suggest you determine your blood type and read the book " Eat Right For Your Type" by Dr. D'Adamo. I find that many folks who are type O blood do not take adequate protein and they do much better once they increase their intake.

Herbal Remedies:

Common herbs which help with depression are St. John's Wort and ginseng. It important to be sure of the quality of the herbs you are taking. The Prairie Doctor brand and Phytopharmica are of exceptional quality. These are helpful in mild-to-moderate cases and you must be monitored if you want to try these along with your antidepressant as they can potentiate the levels of serotonin and you can end up with levels that are too high resulting in hyperserotonism.

Homeopathy:

Homeopathy is a method of treatment that should be administered by an experienced homeopath. This is a type of medicine that uses energy substances to stimulate the healing power of the body and can be very effective once the correct remedy is administered.

Light Therapy:

Full spectrum lighting is very beneficial for those experiencing depression during the dark months of winter. Using full spectrum lighting at your desk for several hours a day during the winter has been studied extensively and found to be effective. St. John's Wort is very helpful for this type of depression. Walking outside for 30 minutes a day will also provide you with brighter light than indoor light, along with the added benefit of exercise!

Exercise:

Many studies confirm the positive effect of exercise on the mood. Just 30 minutes a day is all you need! Pick what you like to do and find a buddy to help you keep to a schedule. If you can get a walk in the sunshine, even better. I call this a sun bath!

Stress Reduction:

In addition to exercise I recommend 20 minutes of some kind of meditation practice. This is easily obtained by listening to a relaxation tape on your walkman at any time of day that suits you. You can think of this as a spiritual spa using the visualization techniques Moore talks about in her book "How To Master Change".

Water:

Drink lots of it. If nothing else it may prevent you from eating as much! All the cells in your body will love you for the water they so desperately need.

Over 50:

Consider B12 injections, extra folic acid and gingko biloba to increase the funtioning of the brain.

Organic Imbalances:

Have yourself evaluated for the presence of allergies, nutritional deficiencies, anemia, hypothyroidism, sytemic candidiasis, diabetes, chronic fatigue, any chronic health disorder, and digestive imbalances.

Professional Advice:

The above suggestions may be individualized to your needs so seek out a counsellor or naturopathic doctor if you want to avoid antidepressants or work towards getting off of them.

Depression may be the gateway for a major positive change in your life. Make room for it. The cycles of nature reflect in our human bodies as well. The sooner we realize that change is a reality of living on this earth the sooner we might be like ducks with water running off their backs. If we go with a fall rather than bracing against it we generally fair much better. It is difficult to live in a world of such strife and not be affected by it. The trick is to create our own heaven on earth from which we can operate as much as possible.

Good luck in creating your own healing sanctuary!

Crying jags, lack of energy, gloomy, sad feeling, sleep all the time, but also sleeplessness at times, lack of appetite, no sex drive, suicidal thoughts, and I had hallucinations.

I usually experienced rage during a manic episode, but not always.

Have you seen a doctor?

I hope so.

medication does help, but so does therapy.
