ITS BEST TO DO CARDIO RIGHT AFTER YOUR WORKOUT!!!!

Reason for that is, it takes your body 15-20 minutes to warm up (and for heart rate to go up) to start BURNING FAT!!! So if you are doing 40 minutes of cardio with no weight training first. You will only start burning fat after 15-20 minutes. So that 40 minutes of cardio for fat burning turns into 20 minutes.

After weight training your heart rate is already up and your body is warmed up, so when you start to do cardio you are going to burn fat right away.

When you get to the gym. Warm up for 5-10 minutes on cardio machine. Then do your weight training and then your real cardio.

Hope that helps.

Good luck!

Its also good to do longer periods of cardio compared to high entansity. When you do high entansity for shorter period of time you are training more for endurance. Your body burns more fat when you do it for longer period of time 40-60min medium-high pace.

Of course once in while its nice to change it up to high entansity just because it will keep you from being bored or when you are short on time.

ironman 33 pretty much read my mind lol, i afree with him 100%, however, Mrcardio is an idiot. you should NEVER do a workout in the morning before eating. this is when you are ate your weakest, and your muscles are starved. The point however of doing it in the morning is because you dont have to burn of reserves first, then get to burnning fat. but you get the same result if you do it after a workout, and ur not starving your muscles. Workout, then cardio, best way =)

On a serious, yet less complicated note......

There is no "right" way of the order in which you excercise. It can all depend on what you are trying to accomplish. Every one has their own preferences as well.

Personally I like to mix it up. If I am doing upper body weight training I will do cardio after wards. If I am doing lower body, such as legs, I will do cardio first because we all know that after an intense leg work out, your legs feel like jello and have no desire to run or do any intense cardio afterwards.

If you are trying to just maintain or lose some weight, it is great to mix things up and keep your muscles "guessing." Your muscles have memory and will become used to the same routine over and over again. Thats why doing different exercise other than just a treadmill or an elliptical such as jump rope, stairs, swimming etc. will help utilize all of the different muscles in your body, so you will always be burning calories. You can also incorporate cardio into your weight training such as walking lunges etc.

However you should always warm up and cool down no matter what you decide to do. And stretching also plays a significant role in training, before and after your work out. And I would never suggest to work out on an empty stomach. Your body needs energy....

Just my opinion.

I have been a personal trainer for 4 years and have been working out for longer. I've also competed in shows...If you have any questions or need any tips don't hesistate to ask...I have a lot of helpful informations and different routines you can use if you'd like.

^^ you right there is not right or wrong way of working out as long as you workout. But......... There is a difference between having just a workout and affective workout!!!! It is a fact that you will burn more fat if you train first and then do cardio. Calorie wise you might burn the same as if you did it the other way around. But burning calories and burning fat is two different things.

i was enjoying this forum greatly untill EDSTA had to go about and flame people.

Come on man you have some valid points.

But cut down on the flaming.

Remember this thread is for helping people facilitate their opinions on whether cardio or Weight training preferences..

Appreciate your input but dont make this an EGO thing.

P.S I enjoy weight training first 30-50 minutes and than pursuing Cardio on an elliptical for 20-40 minutes.

Than again to eachs own.

It doesn't really matter except as someone pointed out you might have more "strength" if you do weights first. If you're just starting give that a try, can't hurt but as far as one being better than the other to do first there's no difference.
My coach lets me mix it up, weights first, cardio first, whatever he feels like making me do as long as I do them correctly.

That is so interesting! I have ALWAYS done my cardio exercised first (to warm up without high impact or pressure on my muscles and joints) then I move to weights. I'll try doing the opposite and see how it works but I'm going to spend a little extra time stretching first. :)

Remember when we were younger and there was no such thing at STRETCHING? :)

I agree. That's how I workout. I like how the cardio warms and loosens the body to prepare it for heavy, strenuous lifting.

A brief 5-10min warmup is fine. Doing a vigorous half-hour intense cardio workout and then trying to lift anything heavy is going to be less effective at best, and dangerous at worst.

Based on the research I've seen, I do dynamic warmups before lifting, as opposed to "stretching", more for muscle activation than anything else.

A thorough warm up consists of 2-3 minutes of a general warmup(jogging around, kicking a ball, the bike, etc...) followed by 5 min of dynamic stretching of the muscles you are going to use for your movements. From there, you would go right into weightlifting.

Static stretching majority of muscle groups before lifting(exception being hip flexors, soleus) pointless if your flexibility is up to par for a full range of motion squat, overhead press, etc.... Your body doesn't hold static positions in weightlifting movements for more than a few seconds, so why would you warmup that way? Train your flexibility after you exercise when your muscles are completely warm, or seperate after a hot shower or some sort of brisk activity. I recommend activated isolated stretching(AIS) as I find it to be more effective than static stretching alone.

Conditioning/Cardio sessions are best left to other training sessions if you want to get the full benefit out of them. Weightlifting alone will increase your cardiovascular level slightly if you do exercises in circuits with shorter rest intervals(I use 1.5 minutes in between). I recommend high intensity interval training(HIIT), jumping rope, boxing, kettlebells, or anything that is fun instead of long distance running or biking. However, if you do you like to do pure aerobic conditoning, keep the heart rate at 70% and below so it doesn't take away from your strength and power levels!!!

I like to do my interval cardio first then weight training, with time, the cardio(depends on the intensity) wont affect the weights youre using.

Low intensity activity helps remove excess lactic acid built up throughout the body. 10 minutes of training in your aerobic zone will typically remove about 80% of the excess lactic acid built up from training.

OP. What difference does it matter to you? If your pics are recent, you don't have any fat to burn. You're beautiful and hot girl. You don't have to worry about which is better, just get a reasonable amount of exercise to maintain your fitness.

Im 48 about 6ft and I've been overweight most of my life. Now Im down to 190, my goal is 180. I don't want big muscles. I just want to have a reasonable level of strength, flexability, and endurance for a fit guy my age. I'd rather my body look like the dude's they called the 130# runt than the muscle man.

I know everyone is different, but has anyone ever seen info that states x pounds lost = y inches off the waistline. Right now Im about 39"- I want to get to 36". I don't know if 10 pounds will get me there, might have lose to 175.

^^^^ setting weight goals are good to mark progress, but not good for determining your end goal. If you make long term changes to your eating habits and your exercise routine, your body will settle at a level based on them. If where it ends up is not where you want to be then you need to alter your eating and exercise routine again.

OP - as stated in previous posts a good suggestion is to use a moderate cardio workout for 5 minutes to warm up the muscles, followed by weight training and finish with your cardio routine for the day. This assumes you are doing both in the same gym session -should help prevent injuries and burn the most fat calories.

If you are doing them in different workout sessions, then you need to try and find what works best for you. I've found personally that on cardio and lower body weight training days I do my cardio in the morning and lower body weight training in the evening (if I do it the other way my cardio workout suffers and cardio workouts override weight training in my exercise goals). If it's upper body weights the order doesn't matter for me so I do whatever is most convenient.

I generally follow the rule of lifting first then cardio. If I do it the other way around I don't have the energy to lift... thus my lifting suffers...

I generally start with 5-10 minutes on a concept II rower.... (I like the rower because it gets my heart rate up fast and loosens my muscles up...) then lift... followed by about 50 minutes on the treadmill or mix that up with the rower...
