| Wrist bands / glow bracelets, do you want them? Posted: 12/3/2008 3:31:35 PM | I was thinking that I'll have to come up with a way to incorporate a still-glowing bracelet into my salmon fishing gear and arrange to go fishing the morning after an event, to see if it improves my fishing success.
However if I caught a fishie at the event I might not go salmon fishing.

1......How bout an arrow through your head, you know, like Steve Martin used to wear, made of an old coat hanger and recyclable.... 2.....Paperbags, biodegradable......cheap.... 3.....Go naked, refer to option #2 4.....In this time of Canadian crisis, wear a Flag, reusable.............

| Wrist bands / glow bracelets, do you want them? Posted: 12/3/2008 6:21:28 PM | I have an idea but you will have to wait till after I have finished making dinner.. I'm starving!
P.S. using articles around the house as crafts doesn't alleviate the recycling dilemma. Sooner or later the constructed objects will end up in the garbage. These will cause more problems because once the recyclable milk container could be thrown out in the correct manner, it might now be adorned with tons of things that are not recyclable so guess what? It ends up in the poubelle!

I always thought that fiery faerie did a commendable job with her many events. I am doubly impressed now, after learning she arranges black light for her Grouse Grind Climb events.

Posted: 12/3/2008 8:46:25 PM | I'm not to sure about this idea for everyone BUT, I bought this little Jade type fishy from a street vender on Granville street a couple of years back. And I wear it on a black string around my neck when I go to Events. And it serves two purposes. It shows that I am a POF'er, and it just so happens to be my birth sign as well.
I'm not sure about everyone else, but it sure works for this fishy!

| Wrist bands / glow bracelets, do you want them? Posted: 12/3/2008 9:27:48 PM | Sure people should choose if they want to wear them or not. Some newbies are still uncomfortable with the idea of actively seeking a partner, especially from an online dating site, in a public place where they might be known. WE don't see anything wrong with it, but I certainly felt weird about it when I was new to the site. Truth to tell, I still feel kind of weird about it - I sometimes feel like I'm advertising that I'm for sale or something. And like it has been mentioned here...dollar store shopping (!)
Other times I'd like to just sit at a table and get to know people quietly for a while. It would be easier to do if I'm not wearing a bracelet. Different people, different perceptions. It should be optional. Nothing wrong with trying to coax people into it. But if they are firm then live and let live is what I say. I think wearing a name tag would be worse though.
The fish tags ARE really cute! And it is kind of cool to see all the glow tubes on the dance floor - and the venues like it because they can gauge how accommodating they should be in the future - helps with organizing future events at the same venue.
But definitely, respect everyone's personal choices about it and not get too hung up if they don't want to wear one.

| Wrist bands / glow bracelets, do you want them? Posted: 12/4/2008 12:56:28 AM | I certainly don't think anyone should ever be forced to wear a glow bracelet, name tag or anything else. People can choose their level of participation according to their own comfort levels etc.
I personally like the glow bracelets a lot at the events but I do not like the environmental impact. I do drive to events but I don't think that means I shouldn't try and limit other impacts on the environment.
I find people are less receptive to name tags but they are also quite useful at events.
I cannot see how the glow bracelets could be recycled, they have chemicals in them and I do not know of any kind of recycling place that takes things like that but maybe I should e-mail the recycling hotline and see.
As for using them for crafts and decorating, we have had a few break at the events and I don't know if they stain or not.
Another consideration, the hosts have to pay for the bracelets themselves if the venue does not.
It sure would be nice to find a reusable solution to this. Maybe Spuds idea of something hung around the neck would work.

| Wrist bands / glow bracelets, do you want them? Posted: 12/4/2008 11:09:59 AM | Thank you for posting this topic as it was something that we, Chirsta1 and I (nu butterfly) had concerns about as well.
First of all, I would like to say that the Glow Bracelet we purchase is Non-toxic and made of RECYCLABLE plastic. I was assured of this by the company where we purchase them. (Glow Distributors - A Division of Mystical Distributing). The glow bracelets, which we have purchased personally, do last a minimum of 6 hours, although we did come into some that only lasted an hour. This was a shame as it created more waste. Because we still have some of those left…we will use what is remaining at our next event, as to just tossing them. There is the concern, where some, at the end of the evening, go home and toss the glow-bracelet into their garbage. We hope that they would put it in with their recyclable plastics. I know we do. As far as the cost of energy to manufacture and transport glow bracelets…it's the same for any other method that could be used (ribbons, pins, nametags, fabrics). Purpose for the Glow bracelets: For example: 1) Some venues are able to reserve a whole room for a POF event in which case, bracelets would not be necessary 2) Hosting an event at the Firefighters Club, we are given 100 seats for POF. Because this venue is open to the public, the public is often unaware that the 100 seats are reserved for us. Once the POF member arrives and given the glow bracelet to wear…it helps us easily identify who is sitting in our reserved section. Anyone who is NOT wearing the bracelet, we can only assume that they are from the public and we inform them that the area is reserved, advising them that they must seat elsewhere. That is why we request that anyone sitting in the reserved area, WEARS the bracelet. At the firefighters Club, there can be over 200 POF members attending, and with only being allowed to reserve 100 seats for our group, I’m sure that all of you can appreciate how difficult that can be for us to identify our members and to keep our event organized. Because of the numbers exceeding 100, it is necessary for POF members to find seats in the other section amongst the public. This makes it difficult for anyone to see who is who, so the bracelet does just that. We can see where you are, which is important for PICTURE TAKING as mentioned, as how are we to know if you are a POFer or the public?
In the event where Christa1 and I give away door prizes and such, we purchase them for our POF MEMBERS ONLY and not the public. As mentioned by another poster: Not wanting to wear a bracelet ….to be the unknown…..I don’t understand it either …isn’t that what these events are all about? To make new friends? It was also mentioned that the glow-bracelet is fun, creates a little zing/dazzle to the evening and why not? We can’t forget about the NEWBIES. It makes it easier for them and any other POF member to spot other members/singles in the crowd. It also sends a message ….“Safe Zone.”
Alternatives: Pins/ribbons /name tags - many do not like to have pin marks in their clothing -can fall off and poke someone (dangerous) - can’t or do not pin them where they are easily visible or cannot be spotted from a distance…. nametags peel off -where do they end up? Garbage? - if they were to be re-useable - Who is to purchase these. Hosts? Members? -Blinking pins can be seen but again who purchases them? We hosts CANNOT SELL ANYTHING. If the host wants to donate them, will people turn them in at the end of the evening or reuse them?
Reusing the glow bracelets for another project is good idea but please “do not spray paint them” as we do have the O-zone to worry about and make sure that you recycle the container that the paint came in and don’t forget that paint was manufactured and transported from somewhere.
Christa1 and I, will see that we have a container on our table so that at the end of the evening, POF members can drop off their bracelet, where we will make sure that it is recycled. Of course, if you choose to do this on your own by putting it into your recycle containers at home, then that works as well.

| Wrist bands / glow bracelets, do you want them? Posted: 12/4/2008 12:19:28 PM | I think we are all putting a little too much emphasis on the environmental concern. Yes. It is good not to be wasteful but at the same time we are talking about a few glow braclets. They are not depleted uranium shells!
Do we really want to wear a "My Name is ____" tag? I know I dont.

Your post may have been long, but not overly so and you had lots to say, and as far as I'm concerned it was all good, and you have nothing to apologize for.
Moreover I applaud your suggestion to encourage collection of glow bracelets when an event is over so they can be appropriately recycled or disposed of in a responsible manner.
============= EDIT vvvvv
Yer welcome. I like green. LOL

| Wrist bands / glow bracelets, do you want them? Posted: 12/4/2008 3:03:56 PM | Thanks tyeee for your understanding and Yappy lil Pine Needle (love the name) for your suggestion. I'll get working on the box right away! Using Recyclable material of course! And I'll have Christa1 write a short blurb in our upcoming event so that all those attending have the heads up that they can turn in their bracelet at the end of the night. I'll wear my home as it is usually still glowing but I will recycle it when it stops. And that's the truth! | |

| Wrist bands / glow bracelets, do you want them? Posted: 12/5/2008 1:26:05 AM | Point of information....
Notwithstanding the information purported to have been passed on by the retailer...
The glow bracelets are NOT accepted for recycling anywhere in B.C. as they contain liquids and they are NOT marked with a number showing the type of plastic.
They WILL end up in a landfill.
Further....
If they are placed with other plastics that ARE recylable, the whole batch will most likely be sent to landfill as contaminated....please think about what you are going to do with them before you toss them out with other plastics, the garbage is a safer bet.

| Wrist bands / glow bracelets, do you want them? Posted: 12/5/2008 3:24:31 AM | Big And Tall, we have been using these glowing wrist bands for how long now???????
The glowing wrist bands are really good identifiers of WHO and WHO are NOT, POFers at an event.
Especially, since they glow well in the dark, and since some of the POF events are in rooms, that have low lighting abilities.
Since we have the technology of recycling, then, can the glowing wrist bands be sent back to the manufacture that made them, to be recycled????????
If so, then this might be, a worthwhile option to look into especially, if you can get a price redution on newly ordered wristbands, for used, and returned wristbands.
IF, they can be, then let's try that, and if NOT, then just plain burn them, to be melted down.
Before chucking them into the garbage can, and going to the landfil, as garbage.
At least, if they are melted down, with the toxons burnt up, then how much damage can they do then, except, make a big mess.
Other then that, I have no problems of wearing them.
Just my thoughts on it. | |
