| How do you really feel about getting old? Posted: 12/20/2008 9:38:22 PM | Don't care...had too happen some time...honestly. Get some comments that i look good for my age...yeah go put your glasses on and have another look.Caught up with an old friend...hmmm i'll change that to a friend i hadn't seen in a long time...who was suprised that i was still alive considering what i used too do to myself. My niece said to me recently...jeez uncle Buck your looking old...boot up her bum coming soon cheeky young wipper snapper.
Age is but a mere number, how old i am and how old i look is the perception for others to make. The only thing i fear is how much longer i can keep this run down worn out body going before i succome to going under the knife...thats to repair old and new injuries, not for cosmetic reasons...Honest.
My secrets to anti-ageing,don't have any except i do tend to fall over in the mud at work a lot.Don't think someone is unusual for worring how they look,if you want to do it...just do it...its your life.Normal...define normal in this bl00dy world??

| How do you really feel about getting old? Posted: 12/21/2008 1:56:37 AM | Wow ...what a great thread Hilly and terrifc posts by all...and tips on how to stave off aging has been duly noted...
Id like to post but how can I ? As a mortician, I rely on your all to age and subsequently die so I have a job...morbid, I know but oh so true !!...so anything I say will be bias....however let me share a tidbit with you..
As part of the decomposition process, when you pass away due to natural causes or aging...guess what !!! for approximately 0-6 hours after death...your wrinkles on your face disappear completely...!!! I shite you not !!!
Your face will become wrinkle free and smooth, and for a short time will appear like alasbaster, smooth with a milky like appearance......and the chemical process that causes this to happen has never been fully explained..it just happens...lasts for a few hours and then sadly your hard earned wrinkles do return to the riteful place.
This is why people who often view someone who has struggled with their illness or aging and have been in a great deal of pain, and it very much shows on their face, will say that the deceased, "looks beautiful"...and they do because for a short time the pain, that has been etched into their face disappears...giving the appearance of them being at peace....I guess you could go all metaphysical on this bit of info too, if you wish but for a few hours you return to the look of your youth.....
Now what would L'Oreal, Revlon, Lancome and Garnier, give to know what this exact process is caused and how to bottle it.....................oh and the odd sniff of formaldhyde I have found helpful in preserving my great "looks" ...haha
Ah yes the technique of embalming....the ultimate botox....guaranteed to make you appear life like and also banishes wrinkles forever !!! preserving you as you were at the time of death, without those pesky crows feet.................and for those who want further reading on this technique...google Evita or Eva Peron (wife of General Juan Peron - Argentine President of 1950's and yes she of musical)...she died at the age of 33 of uterine cancer...her embalming took approximately 3 years to complete (normal embalming takes 3-4 hours) and after much misadvetnure with her body going missing (it was discovered 17 years later buried in a plot in Italy) when they exhumed her and returned her to her home in Argentina, her body, face etc, had not one mark, nor discoloration, nor decompostion at all from her 23 years of death, she was perfect to look at, ..just dead !!!....her case is studied by all eager morticians and is the greatest embalming of all time - better than Lenin...
So the ultimate cure to all your aging woes...embalming....though the fact that you have to be somewhat dead in order to receive this ultimate "beauty treatment" is a tad annoying !!!
Afterthought: As death is a certainity to us all...just live life to the full..be damned those gray hairs and wrinkles..hell any great mortician worth their salt will ensure you go out looking a million bucks..probably better in death than in life !!!...it can be done...so dont worry, we are here to help..we are the ultimate beauticians. !!!

Freaking awesome Pooks, where do I sign up?
But seriously, yeah I noticed that particular phenomenon when I have laid people out. They can suddenly look completely different and it can be quite startling. My best guess is that its just the total relaxation of all the muscles of the face...kind of like a king hit of botox.
It is quite a big price to pay for looking good for just a few hours though me thinks!
|
| How do you really feel about getting old? Posted: 12/21/2008 2:24:37 AM | Hey Hilly
Yes you would notice it during the laying out....and its very real isn't it?...yes I believe its to do partially with the muscles relaxing but they do know that some type of enzyme enters into the muscles and bloodstream but to date have yet not been able to isolate it and use it cosmetically....I imagine that will happen in the future and will come to a Clinique counter near you soon......
Did I mention that the embalming machine is truly wonderful at removing cellulite and those other unsitely fat deposits...that accumulate on the thighs, bum, tummy which contrary to belief did not come about due to untold scoffing of Tim Tams, Pringle Sour Cream and Chives chippies and Turkish Delite icecream bars..(mmm Naamah) ??? who starts these rumours ?

But I am fairly certain that Turkish Delight Icecream bars make me look younger. Mainly because of the way I eat them and end up with icecream and chocolate all over my face....and then I look just like a grotty little kid. Voila...anti-aging.

"Turkishlamissthemouthalamode "!!!!
Oh god how awesome are they ?...damn those calories..damn them !!! ...oh yeah their fat free !!!! oh and they do make you look younger Naamah...they do !!!!!!!!!.....gulp !!!

| How do you really feel about getting old? Posted: 12/21/2008 3:17:40 AM | As far as avoiding the negative signs of aging are concerned, the answer is as obvious as it it is dull - eat sensibly and exercise. This really applies at any age, because it's about making the best of yourself no matter how young or old you are. The human body was simply not designed to sit around all day while still consuming large quantities of food.
The best way of doing this is to tryo to build exercise into your routine - leave the car at home and cycle or walk to work. Eat a piece of fruit instead of having biscuits or cookies.
It takes commitment, particularly at the outset if you're not used to it, but what I often find is that a lot of people are prepared to misdirect their energy into putting far more work into finding ways round doing what is really just common sense.

You say that like it's a bad thing?

| How do you really feel about getting old? Posted: 12/21/2008 3:31:06 AM | | I think denying the obvious and trying to find ways round it is a bad thing, because you're setting yourself up for disappointment. I don't think commitment is a bad thing, but in my experience (my job is to encourage people to lead a more active lifestyle) it's very hard to change behaviour, however negative or self-destructive it might be. | |

| How do you really feel about getting old? Posted: 12/22/2008 5:30:59 AM | Maybe not wearing makeup of any kind, or only wearing lippy, and eye shadow, and using the apricot body dew from nutrimedics as a face cream, at night. helps. At my age it does. I don`t seem to have all those wrinkles at the corner of the eyes, or any bags under them either. I have never been an advocate of all those make-up products , anti aging my butt! Its all those mixtures of chemicals you women have been trying out all your lives on your faces , that`s making you look old. I dont consider myself old, and looking at some of the photos of my mother at my ae now, she certainly was. But its also, the squinting thru glasses, the ones you wear, as much as the ones you drink out of, having consumed the contents, thats helping you to look old, think about all the preservatives they have in wines and spirits. You have been trying to preserve yourselves from the inside out for years.. And of course the smoking, look at what smoking does to fish,( preserving and wrinkling it all up,) that put me off at an early age too. The first time I tried it gave me an asthma attack, so left well enough alone. think of the money I saved.......

| How do you really feel about getting old? Posted: 12/22/2008 11:02:05 PM | Hi All..................
I don't usually post in threads not related to what I'm doing or am actively involved in, its just a case of better things to do !!! HOWEVER, I have seen the subject line a few times and finally decided to read the posts ( probably cos I'm older than most people posting on here !!! ) and figure that I have my life's experience to date, to draw on !!! and I would like to offer my opinions on this subject.
During my life, I have subjected my body to all kinds of extremes and bad things:
I have smoked since I was 15. I have had at least 2 alcoholic drinks ( Bourbon and Coke ) every evening for the last 35 years. Being an ex professional musician, on occasions I have consumed more alcohol than was apparently good for me ( I fell over now and then, but never hurt myself ) I have been riding motorbikes since I was 14 ( Any and all weather, including thru snow in the UK ). I have worked, ( and sailed and fished and jet-skiied and waterskiied etc etc etc ( think of the salt water ) ) out in the sun in NZ, PNG and Australia ( mostly without sunscreen, ( I'm a bloke !!! LOL )) for nearly 40 years. Please understand I am not recommending this lifestyle, just stating facts !!!
Apparently I look no older than I am, some even say ( not many ) I look a little younger.
However, I figured out many years ago, that I could not sleep when I had something on my mind that needed to be resolved ( now the subject matter could be anything, work related, personal matrimonial problems, I mean literally anything ). ( the following day/days, people would comment that I was looking pretty tired ), from that time I have tried to go to sleep without any problems on my mind ( I fixed the problem during the day )
Therefore, my answer to all the questions posed by this thread is: Go to sleep with a clear mind ( worrying about your ageing looks is just one of those big problems ) ( I have never figured why women are so self critical, after all, surely beauty is in the eyes of the beholder ) and if you take that to the next logical step, If a woman is not happy about the way she looks, why would anyone else be ??? HOWEVER, If the woman were to accept the way she looked, she would put out a more positive 'vib', she would be more relaxed ( see the Morticians posts ) and she would ultimately be a "More Beautiful Woman"
Now if you added the above thoughts to a woman that looked after herself ( I'm told none of the lotions and potions for anti-ageing actually work ) being clean with a little makeup etc and most importantly, being proud of who and what you are ( which of course comes mostly from the inside ) but I guess that is the germ of another thread...
After proof reading this, I guess I missed out on a coupla things, it pays to keep both your mind and body active, they are equally important. After all, if I'm riding my motorbike out in the sticks, I have the adrenaline thing happening ( rejuvenating cells ) I'm not worrying about my skin ( at least no more than keeping it in one piece ) when I get home and finally go to bed I am so exhausted ( probably after a 400km ride ) I have no time to worry about anything at all ( except maybe getting up for work in the morning )
I seem to keep hearing in the news lately that there are more people off work with stress related causes than ever ( maybe they were stressing about the state of their skin )
Jut as a BTW, if I'm looking at a potential profile on POF, if the age says 55 and she only looks 40, then I instantly have no faith in the facts and head off in a different direction, but then thats me ......................................

It looks at the basis of our fears of ageing/death, and how this affects us- personally, and as a society. it also suggests we should be more concerned with who we are, rather than what we look like. Food for thought.

But I know who I am and contrary to popular belief I actually quite like me....despite being a drunken old muppet. What would I have to worry about then if it wasn't about fighting the good fight against wrinkles?

The only scary thing about growing old is being alone while doing it. As long as the body is healthy and the mind intact you have nothing to worry about. I'm glad you didn't say the body intact and the mind healthy because it seems to me that things are falling apart at a breathtaking speed. The body anyway. And the mind? .....What was the question again?

I'm 75, work out in the gym with a trainer regularly, run 3 days a week, work, travel extensively, have sex, participate in intellectual pursuits and can do almost everything now I did when I was 30.
If you feel old at nay age - YOU'RE OLD.
