It will matter to all of us. The question of the bail out seems to overlook the key problem. We can throw money at Chrylser and GM , yet will this effort result in more cars sales? Bottom line is if American cars do not sell the car industry will fail. How many fish out there drive an American car? How many drive a car buildt by everyone else?

ok since all this was brought up.. i have to say it and i know there are those out there who will disagree.. but face the facts...i have said it for years and now people are seeing it.. to save the big 3 the first thing they need to do is get rid of the all the stupid unions.. they are of no use anymore and are a big money drain..sorry but noone needs to make $30 an hour to push a button... yes i do know this happens i have friends who work in differnt places for the automotive industry.. and they make that kind of money to do very little.. second thing they need to do is cut all the wages back to normal prices.. if you go to the honda plant they make about $16.00 an hour while some one at the big 3 doing the same thing make $30 to $40 and hour.. so figure it out. and yes if the big 3 close i am out of a job shortly after they do..

The end may be near for two of the big three as we know them. I know the state budget is beginning to leak badly and the question is where will the general assembly find the revenue to pay the bills. Ohio is not alone. Where does the auto industry go from here? No, I do not drive car from the big three.

Life was all good for the boomers... now when SSI runs dry in 2037, I'll be retiring about then, that is if I'm still alive.

First of all who pocked the money when GM killed off the impact project?? It certainly wasn't the unions, but more than likely upper management padding their pockets from big oil. Damage was done a long time before even that.

Climbs, thought you had mentioned you have Grand Am?

The Grand Am is gone. Biggest piece of junk that i ever drove. Very expensive to maintain. Question to GM. Why do the brake rotors last half the lifetime of the brake rotors on my VW Jetta? Answer: So Gm profits in the service department. When I owned the Grand Am I was happiest walking as I was secure in the knowledge that walking did not put my at risk of towing my GM made car.

Climbs, that depends on the design, the rotors on my Toyota Camry were nearly 100 a pop at the dealer, yet they only lasted a few thousand miles before exhibiting some sort of warpage, aftermarkets @ $25-50 ea were even worse... other than that flaw, that was most reliable car I owned (aside I drove it a lot... will go down as the vehicle I put the most miles on too-138K), though it had the absolute worst front braking system.

I've had GM cars that the rotors were very superior, go figure?

All cars are expensive to maintain! & they make it harder & harder for you to do simple maintenance yourself.

If your one of the 750 Chrysler dealer ships you might wonder where we are coming from. Perhaps the first of many American workers that will soon have no job?

Them filing bankruptcy would actually benefit many. If the government dumps more money into them, the rich gets richer and the regular guy will still loose. If they file, than the courts will force them to restructure. The unions will have to re-negotiate their contracts bringing them down where most people are.

But everyone from the CEO down to the sanitation dept will have to bite the bullet. Unlike what happens in the bail-outs. You know, the guys who screwed up gets their money and when things fail, they ask for more.

In my opinion, if all that bail-out money was divied up among all the households that paid taxes, our economy would of flourished and jobs would of been save/created. Simply because the majority of the people would of paid of their morgages (morgage crisis solved), paid off credit cards (credit crunge is eased) and bought a new car (auto companies saved).

And for the people who thinks that this economy is because people bought houses they couldn't afford really needs to turn off Hannedy and Limbaugh and wake up. People cannot afford homes now that they could 10 years ago. It is due to oil companies, credit companies running wild, and the government allowing free trade with countries that do not follow our own policies.

Noone is giving the people who are loosing their homes a bail-out. Give the banks the money and let them continue to take homes.

Guess I got off subject.

Bankrupcy is the only real way to save the company. Bail-outs just prolonge the agony.

The effects of the automakers troubles are being felt by everyone. I even noticed that scrap prices have fallen so drastically that the crackheads in my area haven't even tried to steal the large quantity I have sitting in my backyard.

Define foreign... keeping things real, I couldn't have purchased a 6 month old Camry, with the same dollars today (adjusting for inflation), that I did back in 1988. The Camry I had was made in Japan, today they are made in Kentucky.... so what exactly is foreign? ... my American built GM's power train was actually made in Japan.

I've never owned a brand new vehicle, for as little as I drive, it never was worth the depreciation hit.... a car is the worst investment you can make, but an evil necessity.

Hearing that, & is it still down?? I got a great price on scrap last fall, but hear it took a turn for the worst over the winter when I don't haul it in.... did this affect all scrap metals?

Gm profits in the service department..

How true, cost me a large bill just for a diagnostic, & for them to tell me I just don't understand this perticular car & how it works... this is the first DBW car I've owned.

It seems that all the prices have taken a hit from new/used cars to the scrap yards and salvage yards. The only thing not taking a hit is whats going out every month despite the loss in income. This also goes back to another conversation I had a few years back about working more for less money than I have in previous years. And its not just me, its alot of people I know from all walks of life and education levels.

If you want to know what really caused the entire deal is the fact that America has learned to live on deficit spending. And its carried over from the government to the people and that has caused us all alot of heartache. But it all depends on who you ask to when that trend first started to happen.

Good point. This country has been living on borrowed money for decades. The generations that knew how to save are dying or they are dead, their money is gone. As for Uncle Sam and the spending consider all the jobs and the impact on the economy, all deficit spending. The trend we see in this country will not change anytime soon. The party is over! Almost time to turn out the lights!

Good, I've been holding back taking it in, I'm sure as soon as I do though it will really go up!

But they told us to spend, & live for today, everything will be OK, & we will be taken care of when the money is all gone... untill then spend, spend, spend!

Now, who is going to give up their cells, cable, high speed internet, McMansion's, the leased car... ect?

The idea is to 'have' everything but own nothing, look like you are doing better than you actually are .... & don't blame me, I did not have any kids to preach the above to.

The only thing on my list is the cell phone and cable and yes I would give up both If I had too. Never saw the need for the other items mentioned.

And so now it has happened two of the three automakers have filed for bankruptcy.

How much more money will the Obama administration pump into these failing businesses? We as taxpayers have already give GM 20 Billion dollars and they are saying they will give them another 30 billion of our money.

They can give me just a small percentage of that say 5 Million and I can start a company of some sort that would put many people to work and give the same amount to others willing to start businesses and put people to work. At least if we were to fail we would have started from scratch and made a hell of a go at it.

That would be 4000 new companies 4000 new buildings that have to be built employing contruction workers and infrastructure personel. Cmon is the gov. that short sighted that they really think this won't just happen again within the following 10 years of these restructurings. How much will it cost you and me then?

I say let them fail. Make room for new technologies and new car companies. The gov. is gonna own large shares of these companies if they fail what will be the backlash from all the debt the taxpayers incur. I think it will end up pushing us into a full blown depression worst that what happened in the past.

There will be no Interstate buildup to save us. We already have an interstate system. They are already planning major repair to roads and bridges so what will there be to save the american worker?

Unfortunately, who is going to be able to afford this new technology?? I for one will never have a cell or Cable. those are 2 things that were never marketed to the masses, yet everyone overextended themselves to have.

Really should have looked into the electric car back in the Early '70's not now... the Boomers have pretty much sucked the system dry, why really should they care?

Cell phones yea I got one but I do not have a landline so it's a wash there.

Cable yea got that to but it's cheaper to bundle the services and it's more for my tenants than me.

As far as who will be able to afford the new technology, thats where the engineers and think tanks are needed. Again, more employment, it would be their responsibility to come up with these exciting new technologies and keep the costs down. For to long companies have bilked the american consumer saying that research and developement is the reason, while out of the opposite side of their mouths spews forth words of ever increasing profit margins.

Hey if we are gonna have govt. regulation I say thats as good as any place for them to start.

Today too often new technology is the focus of making money. Consider all the stuff you can do with a cell phone that has nothing to do with a phone call, next consider what we pay for the gadgets, and next consider how the money wasted on gadets might be spent in other sectors of the economy. Money drives the technology is about bells and whistles, not solutions.

OK Climbs then thats where we need to start. Instead of making it about the bells and whistles we should make it about being affordable and practical.

This country needs to get the most out of each and every dollar we generate. We waste too much in this country. Waste is killing this country , not waste along, but waste is a major problem. We are giving our wealth away. People will gladly take your money if we throw the money their way!

How about practical solutions? Smaller cars that are designed to transport people rather than mini condos on wheels that are designed for comfort first! Do we really need to pay for movies in the car? Someone pays for that? Do we need this technology?
