Again, more employment, it would be their responsibility to come up with these exciting new technologies and keep the costs down. For to long companies have bilked the american consumer saying that research and developement is the reason, while out of the opposite side of their mouths spews forth words of ever increasing profit margins.
Hey if we are gonna have govt. regulation I say thats as good as any place for them to start.
As a downsized engineer I have seen my job go south when stocks at the company(s) I worked for rose. I doubt if I'll ever be able to recoup where I once was, thus I will never be able to reap the benefits on some of the technology I may have indirectly worked on.
They all tout 'affordable' I can't see paying $50-100 a month for TV so I can join the 'status quo', that just not gonna happen!
OK Climbs then thats where we need to start. Instead of making it about the bells and whistles we should make it about being affordable and practical.
I've been screaming this for months, yet everyone just calls me a cheap **stard for not going with the flow. ... I don't want the bells & whistles, just something rock solid thats reliable & will last.
So climbs, Don't complain, just dig deep into your pockets & buy things with the bells & whistles, you are helping the economy!

| Will it hit you and yours? Posted: 6/1/2009 10:15:00 PM | DF I got your point a while back just wasn't eloquent enough to put it into words. I agree when it's been said that who the hell needs nav systems or dvd players in their vehicles. It actually took money for focus groups and R&D to get those components into cars. Every bit adds more and more to the price of the automobile yet does nothing to make them more economical. Even at the new standards that Obama outlined these vehicles will still be less than 50 percent efficient.
I wish I could say what the answer was, at least one of two things would happen then. Either I'd become the next Bill Gates or they'd kill me to supress the technology .
Get some of those NASA engineers working on this for christs sake. I for one could care less if man goes to Mars if gas is 20 bucks a gallon and my car only gets 35.5 miles to the gallon I wouldn't give a damn if they found the little green men or not.
They wanna explore the great unknown, how about exploring how to solve the impending doom of the energy crisis here at home first.

Chryslers new electric concept which actually looks feasable, has dual pull out PC's so your vehicle can have it's own Twitter, Myspace & Spacebook pages & blog with your friends vehicles, you can also find out where your friends vehicles are... why would I need any of this?... eventually these things do break. OnStar has been calling & sending me mail on re-activating my system, for as little time as I spend in my vehicle, I can't see the worth in this. ... true these things all add to the cost & eventual maintenance in a vehicle yet do nothing for it's efficency or longetivity.
No wonder the automakers are going down... who is making these decisions to include all this?? I understand when I disconnect my battery in my newer vehicle I will have to pay a 'ransom fee' to reactivate the radio.

All about greed as the gadets cost plenty to the consumer who seems to buy up the junk as fast as it is made!

| Will it hit you and yours? Posted: 6/6/2009 6:40:57 AM | Sorry to hear that huck, and the bright spot in the news yesterday was that job loss was way down. Bet it's not that a bright outlook for you huh?
His is just another example of the way the entire economy is being hit by the automakers failure. I guess you should consider yourself lucky that yes you got a severance package. There are lots of people out there not even getting that. So now he is left to join the close to 10 million other americans in the great vaccum of job hunting and unemployment. Good luck man, you'll need it.
Our government helps out all these companies that are failing but what help is there really for people like huck? Are they gonna step in and help him keep his lights on, heat or food on his table? An almost definite no, is the answer to that my friends.
Instead if he is lucky they are gonna give him a few more weeks of unemployment, at close to less his regular paycheck, offer him some foodstamps and let him keep his health insurance for and extra 90 days. So with the job market as tight as a nun's wahina, where will he be in a year?
They can tell us things are starting to look up because less people are being laid off. Of course isn't that gonna be the natural progression of things? I mean, cmon eventually there won't be any jobs left to layoff from. Of course it has to slow down.
Here's food for thought...How many out there will have confidence in Chrysler and GM when they emerge from their bankruptcies? How long if ever would it take for you to buy one of their vehicles knowing that they might not make it till the end of your loan term?

Who are the people running our government? Who are the people making the choices today on the major issues? Why are American's so uninformed about the issues and the situation we face today? Because for too long American's have sat back, enjoyed the riches neglecting the responsibility that is part of the wealth.
This past week I was reading a blog at Cleveland.com related to Lebron James. There were hundreds of people posting in response to the national criticism attacking the Kings behavior in the Cav's loss. Another page related to GM and bankruptcy. Two comments. And here we are! Myself included!

Some take this too much to heart, while I'm disappointed about "the Curse" continuing, LeBron is not going to put food on my table. People are more interested about celeberties, rather than what's going on in their own world.

My condolences, been there myself... in 2000 I was let go from my 20 something an hour engineering position, less than a year later after the severence & UE was gone, I was working retail for under 6.00/hour.. demeaning yes, but these things happen, & a good thing I didn't get used to the finer things in life. I saw this coming years before. Why we need to do without the frills.
So are we going to tell the GM autoworker that was working for $30-$40/hour pushing a button, that he will now have to work for $16/hour?? & just how do you think he will react to this?
Especially when his CEO will continue to make giant bonuses?

Good luck finding a job that pays that much. really, where can you find a company paying that much?

An affiliate of my former employer spoke with me about four years back about getting me back in to a similar position, I was surprised how much the rate went up in the period of time that I've been gone!! Depends on the size of the employer, what business they are in, some still do give raises & adjust wages for inflation, but now they are getting far & few between.
Case in point, just look at the 'Health Care' industry, the inflation on services & wages has no bounds.

Early '94, never had to ask for a raise, & they were always generous. Now for getting back in, that was someone blowing smoke, a position that never surfaced.

Fast forward to current conditions and the employers offering generous pay and benefits in your field?

The real question just who is hiring in my field, as far as salaries go it's company dependent. Right now where I'm at there is so much competition from Asia, plus their core group is in place which leaves me nil room for advancement especially with current market conditions .... not really using my education or degree, so in a nutshell I've likely become obsolete in my field.
Yes, If I did manage to ge in to a sizeable company the money would be there.... again I would love to be making what I was 10 years back, though if I had stayed there I'd be be doing considerably great.
It's really something now that is beyond my control, so untill then or if & when, no vacations, no frills, probably no AC this summer either!
