| Barbie gets sexed! Is She Going to Hell? Are we? Posted: 12/13/2008 12:48:08 PM | My daughter regularly received Barbies as gifts and just as regularly cut all their hair off and then pulled their heads out. I used to hang them on the clothes line - the heads. They were more effective than scarecrows at saving the veggie patch - really. But I must admit, I loved my Barbie. I made clothes for her - little silver disco shifts - and for her little sister (what was her litle sister's name, again?).. I'm very much aware of what Barbie represents and certainly don't approve. But ya know what - she's a doll. I think with Barbie you can choose whatever label fits - in my case, it was my own. I'm a true feminist, but I'll always have a soft spot for Barbie. Ken always left me cold. Barbie could have done better. | |

I'm very happy you are like minded and "get it".... growin up as a kid in the barbie culture sucked.. You're so right!-- that ***doll just represents bullshyt propaganda and yet so many are blind to it...
If you substituted the plastic haysoos totems for barbie /\/\/\, we'd have more to talk about. Lol. Do ya get spanked for hijacking your own thread?
Ah, Whyt, you disappoint me, siding with the don't ask don't tell crowd. I did no such thing!! Lol. But your target there can be a huge distraction and has been in recent threads. Hmm, banning oneself. Exile is a strange place. Not necessarily bad, just, sometimes generates strange thoughts. Lol.
Sepia, I gotta question the thin lips thing. What's this collagen stuff all about, then?
The larger point is more compelling. Sam bristles at the iconic impact of Barbie, probably with justification. It can just be very difficult to discern the real lasting effects in any of us. I suspect that Britney, Paris, some pro athletes, the more notorious rappers, you-pick-its have a stronger motivational force, although not so long lived as Barbie, as role models for our kids. I always thought Paula Poundstone was hilarious, and so did my teen-aged daughter, til those child molestation issues surfaced.
My heroes have always been cowboys. lol. I don't think they have any idols. At least they don't seem to bow to anything.

What I won't have is one of those "Bratz"dolls.Does no one else think there's anything controversial about the messages they send?
My daughter's been playing with them since they first came out in 2001, I think, when she was 10 years old. She just thought they were cute and hip. She lost interest in them a few years ago. Playing with Bratz dolls didn't turn my daughter into a tart. Girls are either inclined or not inclined to be a certain way, no matter what dolls they play with.

Those who fear of a doll corrupting the youth should try to find something else to worry about... I'm pretty sure there are bigger problems in the world.

It's not the doll so much as the people who are pushing the thing, and their target audience, where all those novel connections are cementing at ground level, the foundations. There are all kinds of ways to be overtly sexual, social, in healthy ways; this new demon-doll (as some see it) is probably not among the top twenty signposts to enlightenment. Yep, lots of problems in the world, most of which stem from the fact that there are too many humans, and because we are a prolific species, ever increasing our numbers, the ways we connect, fit together, become ever more important. Solutions to the problems we have caused, as a species, evade us, and even when effective, seem to lead us to greater problems. But the focus of this thread is more upon the germ which will shape future problems. Imo, the most effective role models for kids are their parents, at least until they first commune with others their age, normally at school, kindergarden/first grade, when the doors open to a sea-change tidal influx of new influences, and quite possibly, pestilence and plague (don't get distracted by the spin, just yet). And please don't misinterpret; I'm far more discomfited by the influences of organized religion (upon children AND adults) than I am about some pesky mutated, and mutating, doll. BUT, the thing, the doll, enjoys a disturbing longevity, which cannot be ignored. No single influence is determinative of an identifiable outcome, to be sure. But what possible salutary effect can we legitimately attribute to this Barbie talisman that spreads with us, it seems, and just won't go away?

Lol. When I was 5-6, I made every effort to plant myself in front of our TV to watch every minute of Cowboy Theater, which started at 5 p.m. It was immediately preceded by the Kate Smith Hour, and to this day, her doleful intoning of that song about the moon coming over the mountains rings in my ears (accompanied by our dog, who sang along). At that age, heroes pick kids more than kids pick heroes, which brings us back to the point of this thread.

| Barbie gets sexed! Is She Going to Hell? Are we? Posted: 12/13/2008 8:28:43 PM | I always thought it was immeasurably more disturbing that the Barbie dolls didn't have any identifiable genitalia. I mean, even if they don't, you still put them in awkward sexual positions... right?... I mean.... that's not just me, right?
oops. | |

Hmmmm. Coital Barbie/Ken. Should we legitimize these dolls, make them instructional? Look, children, at all the ways that Barbie fits Ken! This is,. . . is, . . . well, an explosive concept!

| Barbie gets sexed! Is She Going to Hell? Are we? Posted: 12/13/2008 8:57:29 PM | Well kids do start needing to be taught the dangers of sex earlier. Maybe there should be a Hospital Bed Barbie who's dying from AIDs?
I mean as a young lad myself, its not all uncommon for all my friends around my age to be ranting on about how many people they've had sex with and such, and as teenagers it becomes sort of a competition with guys nowerdays. Round my local town there is a plethora of nightclubs and the amount of times some of the guys have "competitions" to see how many girls they can pull in one night can be scary, but half the time the girls are the ones trying to pull anyways, sometimes by the ties...
And yes, I have too once messed around with my sister's barbie's many moons ago, mixing them with Lego men, the Action Man in my wardrobe, the Dragonball Z characters with the voices, the already arkwardly positioned Japanese Anime dolls and whatever was left lying around at the time. Now thats what makes a "Sex Toy"

Throughout history people have consistently evolved into more and more civilized beings. Centuries ago, many children grew up seeing torture in the form of hangings, beheadings, and various forms of mutilation much like we see a football game today. They saw starvation and hardships like many today would not believe, many, or in all likelihood, most, never even received an education comparable to today‘s kindergarten lesson. While I realize that some children today still see these things, it is my perspective that it is far more uncommon, and thus, in my view humanity has evolved and will continue to evolve in a positive way far into the future. Yes, perhaps the money hungry toy pushers of Mattel have decided to sell more units by playing to the nature of humanity, however, this kind of pestilent product carries a far lesser consequence to its users than a sword in the hand of eight year old. While we should always strive for a better society, we should chose our battles wisely. In my view, a battle to rid the world of a toy, or dare I say mutate it to please our likings, is one we can do without.

That's exactly what the Barbie doll is, based on a existing comic book character and not a "slut" doll as so many people have decided to automatically think it is without doing much of the thinking.
Jeez, you put a pair of fishnets on a doll and the world goes nuts.
Now we're not going to get a Zatanna Barbie for just the same reason!

| Barbie gets sexed! Is She Going to Hell? Are we? Posted: 12/15/2008 5:13:01 AM | I think the doll symbolized America's standard of beauty: blond/ thin lipped/ blue eyed skinny
well actually the beauty of Barby relating to a human form is a optical illusion...a natural impossibility...If you created a real woman to scale with Barby her neck would be 8 inch's long ...a feature the designers gave her to make her look even skinnier ... even I had never noted this till I was looking at a Bary doll this weekend ...her neck is longer than the diameter of her head from top to bottom ....that would be one deformed woman if real
Should I remind you of the movie "Brokeback Mountain"? Careful who you choose as heroes.
My hero's have always been cowboys ...not actors pretending to be cowboys ...cowboy is an attitude...an inner piece with human nature ...best portrayed by Curley in City Slickers ...a laid back at peace with nature confidence ...that comes form solitude ... being alone with nature just you and your horse for a friend ..(there are other ways to come to this but I first experienced it on a trail ride in the mountains just me my horse and my dog ...and I return to refresh it every chance I get)..existing in society but being apart from it... not all cowboys ride horses
It's not the doll so much as the people who are pushing the thing, and their target audience,
exactly little girls have been playing with sexless dolls for ages and it never mattered that they had no genitalia ....but to add it to them is a agenda of people with a cause ..and the only cause I can attribute to it is to sexual-ize our kids at a earlier age than necessary
Well kids do start needing to be taught the dangers of sex earlier. Maybe there should be a Hospital Bed Barbie who's dying from AIDs?
yea maybe we need a Crack Whore Barby ..complete with scabbed over genitalia and needle marks on her arms and legs ...and blood dripping from her gum's where rotten broken teeth protrude ... or put that on the deluxe model ...Crack whore meth mouth Barby ...and then follow that with Pimp Ken and Drug dealer Ken and dont forget the John doll..she does have to make Drug money somewhere

BUT, the thing, the doll, enjoys a disturbing longevity... Wait a sec - who's older, you or Barbie?
I'm just saying... you seem to be arguing now that she's a rock of stability, a constant, a fixture - almost a tradition - in a sea of change.
It'll never end with the plastic princess because, being mute (the talking version never caught on), people can project onto her whatever their imaginations demand, whether it's "empowerment" or its exact opposite, or anything in between. That's what dolls are for. They're low abstraction Rorschach Tests. Perhaps their enduring popularity with girls - 90% have a Barbie by age 10 - is because this projection trait is more inherent in females than it is in males. I'm sure S&M Barbie looks much more like any other superhero from the cartoon universe to a six year-old than it does to a sixty year-old.
But, no, wait... I wanted to be the symptom of the moral decay gnawing at the heart of the country...

POOF! Granted!
The immortals
Caricatures can be highly persuasive. Barbie is. It is those projections with which I am concerned.
Thanks, Deerdog (tip of the hat). We seem to have some things in common, not the least of which is to think beyond Hollywood's latest. It's been a while since anyone questioned my sexual preferences. Lol I can get closer to God under the stars and trees without that manmade cathedral ceiling.

"constantly evolved"..whhhaaat?
really? hmm, maybe in 'civilian' life..
but governments, declare a "war", then it is 'carte blanche' to slaughter, kill, wound, and maim thousands upon thousands..
centuries ago? I don't think they had mass slaughter on the scale of WW II..(a little over 60 years ago), thousands being machine-gunned to death on the beaches of Normandy, etc., etc.
the nazi death camps..1.5 million murdered in Kampuchea/Cambodia in the 1970's.. over a million slaughtered in Rwanda in the 1990's, tens of thousands killed due to "ethnic cleansing" in the former Yugoslavia in the 1980's-1990's..over 600,000 Iraqi civilains dead in the latest "Gulf go-round" ..
200,000 Japanese civilians 'wasted' in the blink of an eye with "Fat Boy" & "Little Man" atomic bombs..
ah, yes, when it is a GOVERNMENT doing it, it is somehow 'civilized" to murder/maim thousands, I get it..NOT..
but if alone person kills ONE , they are a 'mad dog'..

In my town ( Boston) there was also a heavy metal/hiphop band also named "Gangsta Bytch Barbie" - who had a strong but brief following

| Barbie gets sexed! Is She Going to Hell? Are we? Posted: 12/15/2008 10:03:40 AM | There's also the "Barbie"magazine.Comes out I think 4 times a year.I used to have a subscription, but it's a bit on the expensive side.Nicely done though. There's always a feature on customized Barbies. Some amazing works of art people turn some of the dolls into. The whole "Fairy"series started out as a customized Barbie and the artist won the design contest and voila, now the Fairy Barbies are on the mainstream market. I've been to my share of Barbie Bastagization events where people will customize and push envelopes. Those are always fun and ingenious. I think it's important not to take way too much out there so seriously. I remeber a few years back,a major toy store chain i the US started selling WWII action figures along the lines of GI Joe styling, size and detail. They had Panzer,Luftwaffe, and Gestapo. How they got past the toy censors,I'll never know, but I did snatch up one of each before they got pulled off the market. They lasted on the shelves about a month before anyone noticed. | |

I agree with you that modern weapons of war are far more deadly and destructive than those of ancient battles. Also, the idea that it is alright for government to commit murder in the name of rightness is completely and utterly wrong. Having said that, my view is unchanged. If you compare the population ratio of people killed in battle today to that of the people killed long ago, at the very least the comparison would be equal. Yes, we can kill 1.5 million people fairly easily today, however, there are also(the last I checked), over 7 billion people on the planet. War is war, it is wrong - and nothing good ever comes from it. Despite this fact, I find it hard to see the argument that humanity as a whole has not progressed continuously throughout history. Even if I were to take your argument about war today, there are countless other displays of humanity that I could point to where I don’t think you would find the same argument.

I hate to point out that if there had been no wars ...we would probably be all extinct...from over population ...unless disease kicked in and did more than its part in population control ...yes dying in war is horrible..but maybe preferable than dying on a overpopulated disease ridden planet ..seems until people learn to control breeding war is a necessary evil...nature corrects its self when a species overpopulates disease kicks in and thins the herd but disease sometimes over compensates and eliminates the herd ...with a mobile global society afforded by our technological advance this is possible on a global scale ....diseases are no longer confined to just a overpopulated section of the human race ....they now travel inter Continental...so the demise of the human race is a reality ...possibly thwarted by past wars ...too many people = extinction... there have been several pandemics which have had the potential for eradication of humanity .... what about the next one which we don't find the cure for quick enough...what about the new one which attacks the educated and learned sector first ...who will be left to find the cure...maybe Barby lol these relics of humanity may well be the only thing left to tell future spices what we looked like ...maybe we do need to make them psychically correct ...God help us !!!

But, they have no genitals!! Lol. K, maybe the reproductive organs are hidden inside? Or maybe, just maybe, god did Midge. Sooo, what's that say about Barbie? She's been stalking the schoolyards for over 50 years. She's not doable!! LOL!
