I signed up for the fitness challenge and first thing the next day, a representative from Ballys called me at work which really aggravated me. I hate getting calls at work and it better be an emergency or my family when I do get one. Anyway, he was trying to sell me a membership. Next time I will know to give out a fake telephone number. lol... Now I have to go buy a scale and a measuring tape. I have never had either. Anyone else on here sign up for the Ballys on Watson Rd.?
Happy New Year to all!

Yikes. I don't think I put my work number on anything unless it is something that is dependent on my income, such as loans. I know after the free trial is when they called me once last year, but the price was so outrageous I had no problems saying NO. Just use the free month to kick start your energy level. If you can find a Y or another health club that charges by the month you can try that until the weather is nice and you can get out and exercise. Club fitness I think offers a no contract month by month plan for under 20 bucks. Most places go by a year or two though. That is the problem. I got lucky, the one 2 miles from me is open 24 hours, 7 days a week. It offered 2 full years for well under $500. Heck, going everyday and taking my shower there will save me that in water at home! Now if they will just get a hot tub and/or a suana.

Check with your employer, some of them offer reimbursements as an incentive, they figure it will save them sick time & health insurance costs. One of my employers does if you use their insurance, but they also have a decent fitness room with all the stuff you need pretty much!

Tall... what is your challenge for the the month? Do you challenge yourself each time you go to do more? I try to increase every-other time I go in. I try to go 5 days a week, but last night I got too many offers and didn't make it back home till almost 2am. I will be going today while the laundry is going. Maybe 2 times tomorow if I don't get called into work. Once for cardio and once for strength and what they call sculpting.

I have been doing my Wii fit (it really is fun) . This coming week I will start back with the healthy eating, heading to the grocery store today to stock the house with some fresh fruit ,veggies, and protein. Can't believe I let myself get this unhealthy..but hey it's a new year :o) I am even thinking of taking some dance lessons, that should be some additional fun exercise

$53 a year?! That's waaaay cheap....how did you get that rate?

I have been considering 24 Hour Fitness, especially now that my daughter joined. It's super close to me, and I like the idea of it being open 24 hours...but last time I checked into them, there were a trillion different fees and the 24 hour aspect was actually EXTRA! Sooo...not sure if I will, or not.

I like having home equipment, but with a roomie, I do not have the room to keep it all! LOL (Excuses, excuses!) If Nita gets the place she is looking into, maybe I will turn her bedroom into a fitness room again.

Some of the clubs have free trial periods, sign up for that then find out if they have any specials. My 24 hour places just offered me 450 for 2 years & I can always renew at that price, I can transfer it to a friend or family if I am no longer going to use it too. It is withing 2 miles of me. All the classes are free too. They don't have spinning, that is why I want the 1 month at ballys to get a jump start on endurance and to strenghthen my legs for running. What is nice about spinning & elipticals... no need for high impact sports bra, all smooth motion that will put your muscles and body through some good cross trainging. For those that are willing to spend a bit on a good one and the perfect fit... go to Ann's. I am amazed at how good they are. If you can, go for racer back that way the straps are a bit higher.

The club in Clayton has a one trial workout. They have workouts like cardio-strip, some type of chair dance and even pole dance work outs. It is run by professional cheerleaders. It is very expensive and they have ladies night out programs. If anyone is interested I will dig up the website again.

To add more nutrition to a fruit smoothie... You can by pasturized egg products, such as Egg Beaters (Aldi brand is awesome) or another product I bought that is just egg yolk. Some fitness clubs use these in their meal replacement shakes/smoothies. I use one of these plus soy milk, a little bit of OJ concentrate, fresh whole cranberries and fruits with no skin (it gets caught in the blades). Other things besides the fruits of your choice is light cranberry juice, skim milk, some fresh spinich leaves, wheat germ, wheat or oat bran, etc. Some like ice in it, but I prefer freezing cranberry juice and using that.

I dont like fruit smoothies...not sure why...I prefer straight juice. :O)

My daughters 24 Hour Fitness was paying first and last month...plus some sort of fees...for the two of them, it was close to $250 down? But they got the membership that includes ALL classes and extras.

Anyone (female preferred) in the Arnold/Imperial/Fenton area that may consider a membership to the Arnold Community Center and actually WANT to work out on a regular basis with a work out buddy?? They have everything, even racquetball! And in the summer, they have a waterpark outside! Its pretty cool! Also might consider a YMCA membership, which even offers scholarships to single parents, and others. :O) So if anyone in the SoCo area (Tesson Ferry area Y) wants to consider this....

Hey Gang,
I workout at Club Fitness, in Creve Coeur. We only pay $14.95 a month and all classes are free. My son is under my work program and he pays $10.00 p/month. I think that is really cheap as well.
I like the atmosphere and the trainers are wonderful. They do cost extra, but they are always there to help you with equipment or questions. Nice group of kids and no one is stuck on themselves if you get my drift.
The place is always clean as well, which in my book, is a big deal.
As for my workout tonite if I don't see a kettle ball at 15# for abit I will be happy. I planked for 3 solid minutes. Woohoo, not bad for an "older broad"

PS: Terri keep it up, and one other idea for all of you, is try a food diary, its work but it helps you see what your problem eating areas can be.

Kettle ball? Planked? Holy swiss cheese, Jai...you are turning into a regular fitness pro! LOL

Club Fitness definitely has great prices...already checked them out after seeing their commercial, but the distance is not feasible for me. I am waiting to hear more about TallShy's $53 a year deal at Bally's...which I would MAKE feasible for that rate! LOL

Food diaries work for some, not for others. They cause panic and guilt for me...and I am the sort who does not wanna freak out over snarfing up a cheeseburger or feeding spoonfuls of Ben & Jerry's to one another. LOL I find if I just MAKE myself eat small snacks and meals throughout the day, I am ok...no binge eating...and I crave healthier foods as well. When I eat fast food or fried foods...I tend to feel blah!

Wow! A Kettle Bell! I didn't know real people used them! I have and 8lb one, it is for holding a door open... I prefer guided things on track, when I get to exhaustion, I can't promise my motion would be fluid... I stay away from free weights unless I have a fast strong man helping, scared the last one though, he was afraid to grab up the bar that was going to land on my chest... but I saved it at the last sec.

Another thing, you don't always have to hurt to be making progress, don't let anyone lie to you. I am steadly increasing strength, distance, speed and endurance weekly, not daily and have yet to hurt. I can feel my muscles which makes me stretch more and use them more, all multiplying the benefits of working out. I only compare my notes once a week to 10 days. I use them as reference as to what setting, weight & reps I completed. If I can do 20 reps, I try to increase by at least 10-15 by the next week. I also never 2 arm or leg work outs in a row, I let them rest while I work the other. And at least twice a week I repeat everyone of them. I constantly cool my self with a soggy cool towel and drink at least 40 oz of water everytime I work out. I weigh at least 2 lbs more leaving than when I arrive! I have more endurance if I am not hot.

Our Club fitness only lets you go 3 selected days a week for that price! You got it good!

Yep Ladies,
I really use a 15# kettle ball. It sucks it weighs a lot, especially when my trainer says swing it up and squat 1oo times with it.
Great workout tonite.
Total body, worked out with free weights and did some power lifting. How is everyone doing. My niece and I did 8 exercises with 15-21 reps four times around. than planked for 3 again Kat.
My goal is to lose 20# by my competition in May. So plz keep praying.

Be well

I had to find an alternative work out yesterday since I won't be anywhere near home till Monday. At work there are 6 flights of steps near our office, I go up and down them twice. I can't believe how much I feel it in my calves!

I try to avoid overheating by starting while my body is cold from out side and drinking about 8 oz of really cold water. I keep a small towel saturated with cold water to cool my neck, face and wrists as I go. Plus, minimal clothing, just enough to keep people from looking at me oddly. I still think about bringing a big fan with me!

I generally drink about 60 oz of water while working out over 60-90 minutes, always weigh 2 or more pounds when I leave!

You know...that's one thing I find MUCH more easier to do, than I thought I would....drink water! I am one of those...I either love it, or hate it...and I don't drink soda at ALL, so I find ordering water when I am out, carrying a bottle wherever I go, etc...makes it soo much easier! And the reccommended amount of water, by the way, is NOT the old "8 by 8" rule! Actually, you take your weight, halve it, and drink that many of ounces! Increase if you are extrememly active! For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, you should be drinking at least 75 ounces of water. :O)

I think this year is just going to be my year!! WOO WHOO!! Can't complain so far.. I just obtained a very good job woo whoo... Still am impressed with the hourly rate.. heck the RN's back home don't even make as much as I will be in STL. Definitely, a year for change.

As I continue to read this forum I would like to put something into action as well. I am tired of feeling horrible about myself because of my weight(I know I am the only one that can do something about it.) Therefore, I have decided to start attending the gym.. Lord knows I have been paying for the subscription, mise well go.

Can't wait to start on this new challenge. I just hope I stick with it... hehehe. Maybe with the help and support of my new found friends it will be easier hehehe:D.

Good Luck to you all!

Congrats SIT Chrissy on the new job. So are you moving to St Louis or will you be commuting back and forth? Only asking cause I need help up here, I can't be a saint all the time so I need someone else to fill in from time to time and it's only fair since I have been training you that you should step up to the plate and be the saint for awhile.

Well after nearly two months of nursing a severe sprain and small tendon tear in my right ankle - I went back to the gym on Monday (OUCH)!!!! It won't be as bad as when I started last summer however it will be awhile before I am out running around Forest Park Again. (Plus it is to cold anyway)!!!

As for CHEAP Bally's membership - I have one that I keep renewed for 89.00 a year however it is only that cheap due to the fact my Ex bought me a lifetime membership years ago for 800.00 for the first three years - then the cheap renewal fee started the 4th year.

Anyone interested in a free web site that allows you to track exercise, foods and has tons of great tips and support and BEST OF ALL IT IS FREE! should check out - www sparkpeople . com It is a great place to help you - help yourself make progress in the fitness area.

Well C U all or less of you all later

Hey Pink (C),
Ouch on the ankle, be very careful on that. Can be so painful.
Chrissy, congrats on job, I am so proud of you. When u come up next, keep me posted. Ok
As for working out, start slow, do your homework, do whats best for you.
Remember to drink water at all times to stay hydrated. Kats formula is correct btw everyone. If your bored with water, try putting some lemon in it or flavored water, just not with sugar/carbonation.

Shelia, working out cold right from the start is not safe. You should do a small 5-10 minute
cardio with a stretch routine. When you start cold, your muscles are not ready and you can injure yourself like Pink. Be wise on this please. With those great long legs of yours, I bet the men don't mind u being in minimal clothing-lol. I should be so lucky.

Keep pumping away.

Yes - You do not want to injure yourself like poor Pink - plus I do not even have a good story - I was walking my dog at 6 AM and just twisted my ankle on the curb!!!

Doing some good re-hab exercises I got the last time I tripped over my own feet a couple of years ago and I should be 100% in the next couple of weeks

Hey Jersey Girl Jai keep up the good work and I will be rootin for you to lose those 20lbs by May!!!!

Yes, I am very careful with the warm up, I start the stretching/warming of muscles even the way I walk into the club. Then the 1st 2 minutes on the treadmill are spent with slow very long strides so I can feel the muscles stretch, then I increase to a slow run over the next minute, then keep it as long as I can. I take a 1-2 min 4mph walk rest between runs. I am still a slow runner up to 5.6mpg, but it is more than I did a month ago. I want to get 3 miles in 30 minutes soon. I don't want to finish last at the St Patty's day run in March. Some of the POFers from the Indiana border want to come for it and meet up for a gathering afterward.

The water ratio is what I have followed as much as I can for the last 5 years. Especially after my surgery last year. When I visited my daughter in the army, the back of the bathroom stall doors even have guide lines on what to do if you urine is a certain shade of yellow.

My workouts go from 60-90 min depending on how crowded it is and how I feel. I started doing the steps at work and I can't believe how much my legs feel it more than running has been making them feel. So 12 flights of steps is taking me less than 5 min, but trying to run for 30 minutes makes me sweat and pant, where the steps just touch the surface of the sweat & panting mode. The running is burning lots of calories, don't know how much the steps are doing, but my legs are feeling so much more sexy these days!

Pink, sometimes it is good to wrap a sprain for support and do an activity that is controlled but minimal weight bearing, such as a stationery bike. Put the weight on the seat! As long as you check it out with a doc. Keeping it moving for some sprains will help it heal better keeping the circulation going. My left ankle is my problem one, same leg that that had to be broke and set when I was 4 or 5 so I could walk.

Chrissy, congrats, wtg chicky!!

Theresa, took me a bit to figure out SIT, Saint-in-Training LOL
however I figured Chrissy to be my 'social butterfly' for future events when I cannot attend...so much for that idea..I suppose her sis Stephanie can take care of that for me

for the physical topic here..I would much rather exercise with a buddy then try and attempt anything on my own! However I'll have to figure the finances first..too many irons in the fire right now.
