Let's see, the chicken or the egg?
Are we not giving an increase in the minimum wage because the cost of living has gone up over the last number of years? If we do not give an increase in the minimum wage once in a while the people earning it only falls farther and farther behind. I guess that is ok for the middle or upper class who have been getting increases in their wage over the years.
Oh, I do know the cost of living increases factor into the decisions as well. I wouldn't begrudge the middle of upper class individuals that get their wages/salaries increased over the years. I'm sure many work their tails off in order to get where they are too. Those are up to their respective employers. I'm in no way upset at anyone in the minimum wage bracket earning their way , I just question the process of how and when these increases should take place. Most people making minimum wage don't stay at that pay rate for very long. Most will want and do work harder to secure a better wage.
The ones I feel sorry for are the people just above minimum. When this kicks in, some places don't scale them upward. Kind of seems wrong...

As the minimum wage goes up the employers that pay above minimum wage follow step pretty soon otherwise they would not have employees.
As some have said minimum wage is basically for entry level positions but the rate sets the standard for others positions as well.

| Manitoba to hike minimum wage to $9 Posted: 1/3/2009 4:42:15 PM | when upper class pillages daycare spots pretending there kids need assistance in learning functional behaviours i think it is cherry picking resourses from children who need the service. care to pretend daycare is child care........nice and sneeky of the arrogant fools whom pretend daycare is for them show they lack leverage in grasping logic. when they look down there noses i laff cuz they can not smell their own azz. and when they pretend they are entitled to that resourse which are designed for poverty and giving children tools to move forward, is the biggest joke of all....cuz they can';t feel the welfare but is obvious they feel they need it...hahaha
big joke nothing more special than an arrogant fool who thinks people do not see right thru it. oh well sucks to be them cuz at least we can see the lies right in the open. smug and educated with the owned home and you still send your children to a resourse which is designed to give children who do not have funtional structure...and you take that from them without even pretending and actually expect to sell that chitpile to others...sorry does not fit into the structure of logic nor does it enable us to pretend your better humans..your just sneeker at stealing from the poor. shakes peanut box...no you can afford to buy your own logic...you can not have mine.

| Manitoba to hike minimum wage to $9 Posted: 2/5/2009 4:12:05 AM | op,
Yep, I could live on $9/hr...but I'd have to change my lifestyle/consumer habits Probably have to rent out a room or two and travel a little less. I'd probably live quite well actually...
Businesses create jobs/employment... in order to make a profit/stay in business/keep employing people, they HAVE to pay workers less than they are worth. If someone doesn't like working for less than they are worth they should use their brain and come up with their own product or service.
There has to be some motivation for getting up and doing more! Crappy minimum wage? There's your external motivation! Giving small businesses tax breaks? There is theirs!
Minimum wage is meant to be a starting point...placing cans on supermarket shelves or flipping burgers...If you are still earning minimum wage by the time you are in your 30's you aren't really trying...Move back into mom's basement and quit whining. No x-box for you!

And as far as all you mothers that wasted all those years taking care of kids go... well I am not really sure, but take that.

| Manitoba to hike minimum wage to $9 Posted: 2/5/2009 6:56:21 PM | Good one printer2! Put me in my place! Guess I was refering to those not actively engaged in the most important work of parenting & child rearing... Mother or father. No descrimination here. The gist of my post stands though...kids or no kids, minimum wage should not be intended or perceived as a 'comfortable' option...it should be a motivation to better things. One may have to modify ones sense of entitlement, but minimum wage is 'workable' with some imagination and sacrifice. | |

Right. And anyone on "assistance" shouldn't get more ( in either cash, rent, or services) than someone working a fulltime minimum wage job. They should get less, actually.

Why should someone on assistance receive more than someone working FT minimum wage? If they can't live on FT minimum wage then it's just proof minimum wage should be higher.

| Manitoba to hike minimum wage to $9 Posted: 2/6/2009 12:01:41 AM | A minimum wage at 9 bucks an hour sounds s little daunting.
However, there are provisions made in the "Canada Action Plan Budget For 2009", that the Canadian Federal Governement is contributing money to the employment sector to help Canadians get money for education, and services related to employement.
That will help Canadians better their skills, that will allow them to pursue a more skilled, and better paying job.
The web address where you can find and download a copy of the "Canada Action Plan Budget For 2009" is,
"Canada Action Plan Budget For 2009" http://www.budget.gc.ca/2009/home-accueil-eng.asp
Hope that will be of some help to you, if you are considering a caeer change, or needing money to help you to pursue a career change, or any any education that you may require.
Because, for adults trying to make a living on a minimum wage of 9 bucks an hour, these days, really does not cut it.
It is ok, if you are a student, who has the opportunity to live at home.

If they can't live on FT minimum wage then it's just proof minimum wage should be higher. Ummm...Not necessarily. Maybe it's just proof that they aren't being imaginative enough when it comes to their living & spending habits...Some people 'can't' make it on 100,000.year. Pfft! Maybe someone working for minimum wage needs to share an apartment instead of renting a house, carpool instead of owning a car, Buy potatoes instead of french fries, etc...Didn't say it would be fun or easy...said it should motivate to better things.

I didn't include your entire post, just wanted to clarify:
I meant the people on assistance. If THEY can't live on what a FT minimum wage person would take home it mean minimum wage should be higher; there's no way someone on assistance should be getting more than someone working a FT min wage job.

| Manitoba to hike minimum wage to $9 Posted: 10/26/2009 2:53:53 PM | Getting back to this thread; should a company be required to raise the wages of exisiting employees by whatever the rise in minimum wage is?
By that I mean if the minimum wage were to be raised by 50 cents, should employees be made to raise the wage of ( for example) a $15 an hour employee to $15.50 ?

Getting back to this thread; should a company be required to raise the wages of exisiting employees by whatever the rise in minimum wage is?
Absolutely and they should also be made to pay all personal expenses for each individual employee such as housing and medical costs, clothing, food etc. There should be abolutely no reason why every company shouldn't pay for every expense of its employees as well as give them whatever wage they desire. after all why would a company want to profit they wouldn't reinvest any money into the community or expand and create more jobs or goofy things like that so they should be forced into bankruptcy and those who do have wealth should have it taken away and reprogrammed into understanding we must be identical to be equals therefore those with ambition must be brought down to the level of the majority. Damn the successful for being greedy and causing employment and prosperity, may they rot in eternal hellfire.

My point is many people may start a minimum wage job, work there for a time getting regular wage increases from their employer (to reward their work & company loyalty, and to keep productive workers), then see new employees get hired off the street at or near their current wage because the minimum wage has been bumped up a few times while they've been employed there. So the new employees get the same ( or close to) wages as employees that have been there a while.

| Manitoba to hike minimum wage to $9 Posted: 11/1/2009 11:35:00 PM | | I've seen people i trained for the job surpass me on the wage scale because they demanded more pay i don't see it to be a big deal and i shouldn't know what they make anyway. I will never ask for a raise nor expect one, i just want to make enough to live. When i get into a position when the pay is too little to lve off i will get a higher paying job somewhere, they always come along. | |
