Pumpkin16 forgot to mention that blood donation gives you the right to quote from Tony Hancock's "The Blood Donor" verbatim.

For example, when told that they collect just under a pint, you are obliged to exclaim, "A Pint! That's nearly a whole armful!"

Personally my favourite part was when he was chatting up the nurse (a very young June Whitfield) and he confidently boasts, "I could have been a Doctor, but I could not be bothered with the exams!"

Welcome to the club, it can be fun and it makes you feel like you have made a solid contribution. Just the thing for starting the New Year off the right way!

I am giving blood on Friday. It is a good idea whether a regular or a newbie to phone to make a specific time appointment: A couple of times I turned up on a day advised and was turned away due to over capacity.

The hero feeling is truly fantastic even if private normally.

My AB Positive blood is not rich enough in Iron, so sadly I had to stop giving it

Two weeks ago today my ex-husband was involved in an accident where he lost his arm above the elbow and both legs above the knees. He was in a highly critical condition and needed lots of blood. It is easy to just take for granted there will always be blood available, but we shouldn't assume it. I have never donated having had diabetes, but am now controlling it by a low-carb diet, so I will consider giving blood. Thank you to all you regular donors because you really do help save lives.

You are all

Thanks, he recovered physically very fast and is out of the ICU and is now in a surgical ward. The injuries are healing very fast but the future will be hard for him. I have never thought about blood donations before, and like the telly ads say you just take for granted it is always there. But blood donations are always needed.

Hey Thandor, yes you can give blood if you have been to Cambodia, but not until you have been back in the UK for 6 months (I think it's 6 months anyway).

My son was in Thailand and Cambodia last year and he is back to giving blood again now, although he did have to wait a while before he could.

A couple of times I turned up on a day advised and was turned away due to over capacity.

It's great that so many people are giving blood now! The appointment system seems to work pretty well, I donated a few weeks ago and was in and out in half an hour or so, and that included having my tea and biccies.

my sincere thanks to everyone who has made a comment ,its not for everyone i know but if as you have read it has an effect and makes one or two people think about it when it would not even cross there minds then rather than having hundreds of fish arriving at one centre we can have many at a centre near you and at least it has triggered a few into action so if as it appears to be one or three go do it ,its a lot more than it was before i posted this so
thank you all im not associated in anyway with the blood transfusion service i just thought it might have been something worthwhile to try and by the responses it looks like it was well worth a few mins of typing

my sincere best wishes to each and everyone of you and your familys for 2009 and to those who have major upsets and traumas this past year lets hope they are behind you
good luck to you all!

I was involved in an RTA (now called an RTI) in November 1981 and was given a blood transfusion which apparently included Factor 8, so whilst I would love to give blood as those who donated blood saved my life, I am not allowed to.

Its a time of year when the blood service struggles, and I think this is a great idea.

Glasgow is a little too far away for me though... I'll call in when my cold has cleared up a bit more though.

You reminded me of noticing there was a singles group that arranged a meet to give blood once in Sheffield, years ago mind. Not sure many people not familiar with the experience would feel comfortable making it a singles event, but if there are enough regular donors on POF maybe it would be worth ringing the centre and finding out a good evening to try and get everyone to make appointments for? Better than turning up en mass unannounced and causing chaos!

I'm a regular blood donor, my dad has been doing it for years and was honoured in a ceremony by the NHS recently. I've just had to miss my latest appointment as I had a tattoo done and have to wait 6 months after. But will be back to 3 month intervals shortly

I would love to be a blood donor its such a worthy thing to do and i really admire people who do, iv actually considered it for over 20 years but im ashamed to say im afraid that i may pass out and make a twat out of myself and have never done it.

Instead of the regular diet resolution maybe instead i should do that - great thread OP

Gucci girl,

do it on a day when you've nothing pressing to do, have a decent breakfast and loads to drink, and get a friend to drive you.

I can promise you wont pass out, but there are plenty of nurses used to handling it without making you feel a twat more than is unavoidable!

In my experience some of the frailest and most dainty ladies are the first to be jumping around again after!

I really reccomend it for the feel good factor, and some of the male staff are pretty nice too! lol

I thought that leucodepletion takes away any probs associated with factor 8 - have you checked recently? If memory serves me right they started leucodepleting blood in the early to mid 1990's. I may be wrong but worth checking. I believe it was introduced in response to the BSE issue but removed risk of other infections too, but worth checking anyway. Factor 8 is in everyone's blood, the problems came in the days when factor 8 as a blood component was given to heamophiliacs and found to contain the HIV virus. But as all blood donated is tested for HIV now it may not be a problem.

I've been a regular donor since I was 21. I give three times a year. I enquired about being a platelet donor, but I haven't got enough to share, apparently :(

why not take a friend who can or encourage others who have never thought about it
all it takes is a mention and pow like this forum one or two said they were reminded

The number to ring is 0345 7 711 711, they'll tell you for sure Shaney.

As for having to wait an hour and a half for them to find a vein at the hospital, the Blood Service venepuncturists often go and help train the ones in the hospitals - they're better at it!

It's right you have to wait 6mths after a tattoo though.
