| UFC : George St.Pierre vs BJ Penn 2 Posted: 1/15/2009 2:02:24 PM | | Hey, running in the loose sand is a MEGA workout, bro. Don't knock it! BJ has skills, but I agree the "I want GSP DEAD" thing sounds retarded. | |
|
| UFC : George St.Pierre vs BJ Penn 2 Posted: 1/15/2009 2:21:00 PM | GSP: "I know how to fight this guy...I know I'm gonna beat him"
BJ: "To the death! I'm willing to die"
hmmmm....who sounds more confident? actually the more I think about it...the more I realize BJ only has a few chances of winning...
TKO early.... or a submission off his back... ...or one in a million flying knee KO ala Sean Sherk...
...and remember...GSP's a JJ black belt now... ...BJ just tells himself things like "St. Peirre's a quitter" because he know's this is gonna be the toughest fight of his life....
...on one hand this fight can be really close...but at the same time...I wouldn't be surprised if GSP completely dominates....
...while BJ's on the beach...GSP's sparring with an army....
|
| UFC : George St.Pierre vs BJ Penn 2 Posted: 1/15/2009 2:35:25 PM | Without getting to deep into all the why's and how's.....just remember one thing....
BJ is the most naturally gifted fighter to EVER fight in the UFC. Natural talent can beat a hard working athlete on any day of the week. Now, I'm not saying GSP doesn't stand a chance, but loud mouth or not, do NOT under estimate BJ Penn.
He can win this fight in just as many, if not more ways than GSP.
|
| UFC : George St.Pierre vs BJ Penn 2 Posted: 1/15/2009 5:56:39 PM | The whole "GSP is a quitter" thing is pretty asinine coming from BJ. If it were true, then then St. Pierre would have quit in the first fight after a rough (is possibly slightly eye pokey) first round.
That said, BJ lost that fight for two reasons: wrestling and cardio. His cardio has been really good at 155, but we don't know how it'll hold up at Welter. Even if not cutting leaves more in his tank, working against a bigger guy (which GSP most assuredly is) may well tire him out. The problem for him as I see it is the wrestling.
Penn's used to being effectively immune to wrestling due to his ridiculous flexibility, and that didn't work against GSP once he started going for takedowns the first time around. I really don't think he'll be able to change that this time out, and GSP's game plan will probably rely heavily on it. Which will in turn affect the cardio side of things. That takedown/scramble/takedown kind of fight is a lot more taxing than the largely standup fight with Sherk, and whether Penn's in shape or not, may be enough to gas him in a 5 round fight.
I think BJ will be a lot harder to wear out than Serra was, but it's a distinct possibility.
If I were to call it, I'd probably say GSP by decision, but I wouldn't be surprised if it went the other way. It is a pretty close fight.

| UFC : George St.Pierre vs BJ Penn 2 Posted: 1/15/2009 6:27:44 PM | | ^ Agreed. I don't think that GSP will be dumb emough to try to stand with Penn the second time. He knows his wrestling can put Penn down and keep him underneath for GnP. The problem is BJ is a superior submission artist - remember he almost caught GSP in a gogoplata. GSP may be a BJJ black belt too, but Penn is on another level there. I do think that BJ's cardio is questionable compared to GSP's, and that is where they fight will tilt, IMHO. | |
|
| UFC : George St.Pierre vs BJ Penn 2 Posted: 1/15/2009 8:36:54 PM | | BJ fights with an arrogance about him, and GSP is alot more focused during a match. Although its never been a huge issue for him before, I believe that BJ is gonna have stamina issues and will go by rear-naked choke in the 3rd round. Remember you heard it here first. | |

| UFC : George St.Pierre vs BJ Penn 2 Posted: 1/16/2009 9:33:04 AM | It's going to be one helluva fight to be sure, but my money's on GSP.
GSP is strong in all areas, he is the more gifted athlete, he has better conditioning, and he is bigger. And when hasn't he dominated a fighter in a second meeting?
I respect BJ's talent, but I want to see him lose to GSP and then put his title on the line vs. Florian. And then I want to see him lose there too. Actually, I want to see those other guys win, as opposed to see BJ lose, but all-in-all, same dif.

| UFC : George St.Pierre vs BJ Penn 2 Posted: 1/16/2009 11:15:04 AM | Dana white recently said that if GSP beats BJ he will then defend his WW title against number 1 contender Alves sometime in the late spring/summer . If he retains the title there Dana said they would then like to set up another mega fight pitting the MW champ vs WW champ at a possible catch-weight. Silva vs GSP! (Assuming Silva doesnt lose for another 11 months or so)
I think this is the first of many mega fights to come in the following years. There was also talk of a Liddell vs Silva mega fight at 205, but who knows.. Chucky needs a winning streak b4 that one.
It's also ironic BJ called GSP a quitter, if anyone is a quitter its BJ. Born with a silver spoon up his ass. His whole life having ppl tell him he's the best, he even said it himself that he got lazy. He quit in the hughes fight. And GSP will break his will in this fight.
There is simply no way BJ will 'out-cardio' GSP. He allways talks big saying he's ready to go the distance but rarely can.
But like bmc said..This fight will not be determined on conditioning... YA! OK..
We will c... | |

| UFC : George St.Pierre vs BJ Penn 2 Posted: 1/16/2009 8:07:38 PM | BJ didn't "out-cardio" Sean Sherk or Joe Stevenson either. He just beat the ever living crap out of them.
No one is in better shape than GSP. I just don't think it's going to play a part in this fight. OLD BJ Penn, yes. Not this one. He's looking to define his legacy with this fight. Don't let the prime time show fool you, he'll be in shape.

| UFC : George St.Pierre vs BJ Penn 2 Posted: 1/17/2009 9:06:34 AM | I took in seminars with both fighters. The GSP seminar was about a month after the first Serra fight and he was probably walking around at 190 -195 lbs. The BJ Penn seminar was in the summer of 2007, after the Jens Pulver fight, he was probably about 180lbs at the time.
GSP came across as a genuinely nice guy, very personable, sincere and modest. You can’t leave his seminar not liking the guy. BJ was also very nice in person. No attitude …totally different from the jerk he sometimes is in front of the cameras. BJ and his brother Reagan even spent part of the lunch break rolling with any participant who wanted to. In person BJ comes across as a cool guy and not an ***hole .
Despite the recent pre-fight rhetoric coming from BJ, both fighters genuinely respect each other. If you watch the early promotional interviews with both fighters they were very professional and respectful of each other.
I have been watching MMA since UFC I, I have seen almost all GSP and BJ’s fights (UFC, K1, UCC, TKO).
GSP has always been a fighter who continually improved. Whenever he had a setback he seemed to regroup and come back stronger than before. He has a fantastic work ethic about him. After the Serra fight he made significant changes and it is paying off.
BJ was the prodigy, the one with natural talent and someone who sometimes did not deliver what was expected. There were always questions about his seriousness, his lack of training and his motivation. In his most recent fights, since BJ has refocused on training, BJ has been impressive but that was at 155.
I’m going with GSP in this fight because I believed GSP has simply become a far better fighter than BJ Penn at 170lbs. I’m not sure if BJ can successfully bulk up to take on GSP and still maintain his cardio. At 155 BJ is 9-1-1 at 170 or above he is 4-3. He is 1-2 at 170 in the UFC. GSP is 17-2 at 170, 12-2 in the UFC.
I’m not sure how significant the first fight is. Some mention the damage BJ did to GSP’s face as being an advantage to BJ. However, I have heard GSP refer to that as being a pivotal point in his career. In the first round he was bleeding profusely from the nose, couldn’t see very well as a result of the eye poke and was unable to defend himself properly. He admits he had momentary thoughts of quitting. He views the fact he did not quit, that he made it through the round and then went on to win the fight as a significant event in his career particularly since he felt he tapped too soon in the first Matt Hughes fight. He views that fight as a huge psychological breakthrough for him.
GSP right now is firing on all cylinders, his total fight game is continually improving and he has been executing perfect fight strategies. Have to pick GSP.

There's another reason to pick GSP...he's probably the SMARTEST fighter right now...always breaking down his opponents and taking the fight into areas where he has the best chance of beating them....
90% of the time you can pick the winner of a fight simply by the way they talk or their body language before the fight (Rampage/Silva 3 was the exception) if it holds true this time....BJ's done. Period.

| UFC : George St.Pierre vs BJ Penn 2 Posted: 1/17/2009 5:50:13 PM | GSP will win this fight.
There is no way Penn's stand up is betting than GSP's. And if you are referring to the fight against Shrek as some sort of coming out party for Penn's stand up game forget about it. Shrek's right hand was broken, so there was no agression on his part towards Penn, he could not attack so it made Penn's stand up look even that much better since his opponent was not fighting back.
Lets look at GSP's stand up in his last fight, against Fitch. If Fitch wasn't so stupid he would have gone down earlier in the fetal position and just tapped out, instead he decided to donate blood and test the limits of how much abuse ones head could exactly take. GSP is a machine on his feet, and he is the best at passing anyones guard and then thumps your ass. Let's not forget about Serra's "world class JJ" that sure did not help him when ne repeatedly took knees to the ribs from GSP and could not do anything about it.
GSP is just a way more dedicated and superior athlete. Penn is arogant and good for the first 2 rounds.
GSP in the 4th round. | |

| UFC : George St.Pierre vs BJ Penn 2 Posted: 1/17/2009 7:25:40 PM | This is a hard fight for me to pick, due to the fact that I'm a big fan of both guys. Both guys are in the prime of their careers, and they're VERY evenly matched. That's what makes this fight so interesting.
GSP's best place to be in this fight is on top of BJ on the ground.Despite how great his BJJ,Penn has never submitted anyone off his back in MMA.His MO is to get a sweep from there, take the back and then it's all over.BJ is going to have a hard time doing this due to GSP's excellent wrestling base and top control. If GSP can control the fight on the mat,he can grind out a decision.
BJ's best places to be in this fight is on the feet or on top of GSP.While GSP is a great striker,BJ has considerably more power in his hands. If BJ gets on top of GSP on the ground,it's going to be a bad night for George.
I'd consider GSP to be the favorite in this fight, but I'm picking BJ.If he can put the heat on George early and bust him up,he'll be able to stop him.BJ can't let George get into his "riddum"-he needs to pressure him from the opening bell.
No matter who wins,I'll be happy for them, and I'm sure it's going to be a great fight.I'm also REALLY looking forward to the Nate Diaz vs. Clay Guida fight on this card-that is going to be an absolute war for the ages.Plus Karo Parisyan is coming back-gotta love "The Heat".The Machida-Silva fight should be interesting, with the winner most likely getting a shot at the LHW title, since Rampage will be fighting Keith Jardine first.

| UFC : George St.Pierre vs BJ Penn 2 Posted: 1/17/2009 9:55:11 PM | BJ's standup is better. He more technical then GSP. GSP makes up for it by being the superior all round athlete.
But to say GSP has better hands is simply silly.
|
| UFC : George St.Pierre vs BJ Penn 2 Posted: 1/18/2009 1:41:45 AM |
BJ's standup is better. He more technical then GSP.
I dunno about that...they both have lightning fast jabs...completely even there...BJ's hands might be slightly faster...but really now...there's much more to standup than boxing...that's where GSP has the slight edge on the feet...
....only guy I've ever seen throw a superman punch/leg kick combo and actually land it...he mixes it up better than BJ....and if BJ looks anything like he did in the Sherk fight, all GSP has to worry about is his jab...and perhaps a flying knee????
...GSP seems to have gained a ton of power in his hands judging on how many times he dropped Fitch....
|
| UFC : George St.Pierre vs BJ Penn 2 Posted: 1/18/2009 10:56:58 AM | | Well, I think that judging by their last fight, one would have to say that BJ's striking is better than GSP's. Look at their faces at the end of that fight! | |
|
| UFC : George St.Pierre vs BJ Penn 2 Posted: 1/18/2009 11:05:32 AM | The people in this post saying GSP's stand up is better than Penn's are simple fooling themselves. Penn's stand up is world class. Always has been. GSP might be more dynamic and flashy, but that does not mean it's of better quality.
Kenpoboy is 100% correct. Watch their first fight and how easily BJ dominated the stand up. It was only because GSP decided to take the fight to the ground, did the tide turn.
Still close and very controversial.
The chess match in this fight will be second to none. Both men are extremely well rounded. I don't see this fight going the distance. Someone will make a mistake and get KO'ed or submitted.
|
| UFC : George St.Pierre vs BJ Penn 2 Posted: 1/18/2009 12:37:05 PM | I watched the first fight five times...yes...BJ out stuck him in the first round...I wouldn't say dominated though...GSP landed his fair share...10-9 round...the only reason GSP was bloodied up was due to an eye poke and a grazing uppercut that caught the tip of his nose.....
...and think about that for a second...GSP was fighting a BJ that he could barely see for half the round...he didn't even take a moment to recover....
...then GSP...for what little striking there was in the last two rounds...out struck BJ...of course BJ gassed....so all things considered...eye poke...and inadequate conditioning....I'd say they're pretty even....
...but that was 3 years ago...considering what they've shown in their last fights... ...I still maintain...SLIGHT edge to GSP on the feet...
I think GSP might establish the wrestling early to tire out BJ...and then perhaps take the same rout he did with Fitch....go standing when he feels BJ start to slow down...
...my predictions...just as likely for EITHER guy to get a TKO on the feet... ...GSP by ground & pound....BJ by submission off his back...I hope it doesn't go to a decision....

| UFC : George St.Pierre vs BJ Penn 2 Posted: 1/21/2009 10:05:08 PM | Read thru a lot of replies... Love'n this post... here's my opinions,
If BJ's cardio is at his Apex... he will beat GSP... unless george smothers him and rides the clock, which is not at all george's style of fighting, in fact it's the exact opposite... BJ's hands are heavier, his timing is better, his Jiu Jitsu is WAY above the league of gsp's, bb or not... BJ beat the piss out of GSP the entire first round of there first fight..don't get me wrong, George fought thru it and came out on fire in the second, but BJ was out of gas ... as we all know...out of gas means out of fight...
GSP is a Phenom...no doubt, and his tenacity is furocious... his conditioning is rediculas and he has a skill set that is devistateing...all this is true... I still do not think his abilities as a fighter are at the level of BJ, and it's my opinion only BJ can beat BJ...for now...
I think it's going to be an amazeing fight... I can't wait to watch it

I think the only way bj loses is by tko after gassing out... so you may be right
