While I don't think GSP intentionally greased, it wouldn't surprise me if his corner tried to pull a fast one. I have serious doubts whether the outcome would have been any different as GSP's dominance. However, if you look at the 1st and 2nd rounds when Penn was looking for a Triangle out of the rubber guard, you have to wonder if he couldn't have secured it without any vaseline on GSP's back. | |

Posted: 2/19/2009 2:33:16 PM | I actually missed the second round (touch of the flu lol), but I think I saw Penn through his legs up once during the fight, but he otherwise just laid there and tried in vain to maintain the half-guard ... in which a bit of vas on the chest and back is irrelevent.
George's corner men are a reflection on him, and he is a man of great integrity. If i was afighter like GSP and my corner tried to pull a fast one like that, I would lose it on them and kick their asses to the curb ASAP.
As it is Georges guys have stated their case, been cooperative, and offered suggestions to insure this kind of thing doesn't happen again. And, for better or worse, new rules have been implemented regarding the use of vaseline.
For GSP's part, he is more than willing to give Penn a rematch, but I'm sure the ultimate decision on that is not in his hands. Penn should focus on Florian. Although it seems that he is already doing that with his statement that Ken wrote him an email warning Penn that George greases up before his fights. Florian, who is supposed to start training with GSP's team, has gone on record saying that he has only communicated with Penn once, EVER, and that was a simple hello in passing.

Here's some closure:
BJ Penn will move down to lightweight and, at the very least, be a formidable contender if he isn't a semi-dominant champion for the rest of this year and possibly going in to '10.
GSP will, at best, get a slap on the wrist for the incident. Replace "down to lightweight" with "remain a welterweight," and copy the rest of my sentence for BJ Penn here.

"On Jan. 31, 2009, I was present at the UFC 94 event held at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas. The fighters in the main event were B.J. Penn vs. Georges St. Pierre for the welterweight title.
"I was sitting in the front row, near the entrance to the octagon cage, and clearly understood the seriousness of this fight that had been successfully marketed on prime time television.
"During the rounds that followed, I was shocked to see that B.J. appeared to be helpless, as well as defenseless in his attempts to grasp and hold Georges St. Pierre while on the ground. I silently kept screaming and asking myself, 'What is wrong? Why can't B.J. defend himself?'
"I was horrified with fear. My son was going to be seriously hurt because he could not defend himself.
"The match ended in the fourth round, and B.J. Penn lost by TKO when his corner stopped the fight. After the fight was over, I was led immediately to B.J.'s locker room. And knowing that B.J. was seriously hurt, when I reached the locker I heard loud voices yelling that GSP and his cornermen were caught by the Nevada (State) Athletic Commission for applying Vaseline on his body during the rounds and in violation of the rules.
"Although still in shock and fearful for my son, it then made sense to me why B.J. couldn't defend himself. Georges St. Pierre used a greasy substance on his body, therefore giving St. Pierre an unfair advantage over my son, B.J. Penn.
"While in the locker room, I couldn't understand why the fight was not stopped by the UFC's referee or the Nevada State Athletic Commission for the unfair advantage by St. Pierre and his cornerman after they realized the foul. How could this happen? Why was it allowed?
"It is officially documented that St. Pierre's team did in fact apply Vaseline to St. Pierre's body. It is documented that St. Pierre did have an unfair advantage against Penn because of greasing. The Nevada State Athletic Commission needs to do the right thing and find Georges St. Pierre and all others responsible for these unfair practices and punish them to the fullest extent of their authority.

LAS VEGAS - Two months after UFC lightweight champion B.J. Penn's filing of an official complaint with the Nevada State Athletic Commission regarding Georges St. Pierre and his camp ??" and three-and-a-half months after the pair's UFC 94 bout ??" "Greasegate" is still without resolution.
The NSAC briefly addressed the situation as part of today's NSAC hearing at the Grant Sawyer State Office Building in Las Vegas.
Penn's attorney, Raffi Nahabedian, as well as "The Prodigy's" mother, Lorraine Shin, represented the lightweight champion at the meeting.
The meeting was the latest chapter in an ongoing saga surrounding Penn's allegations that St. Pierre had an unfair advantage in their Jan. 31 fight. Penn, whose fighting style heavily incorporates Brazilian jiu-jitsu and ground fighting, said he was at a disadvantage because of Vaseline that was inappropriately applied to St. Pierre's body between rounds of the fight.
NSAC chairman Bill Brady made it clear before proceedings began that little progress would be made.
"This is a non-action, informational item, and therefore no formal action can be taken by the commission regarding this item," Brady said. | |
