The Smothers Bros..Burl Ives and others hundreds of others....Has anyone out there heard of Matthew Lindahl? He was on Nashville Star awhile back and I think he's a fine folk singer got one of his cd's too had to send away for it...That's what they get for selling me a shitty washing machine...

I'm a pretty big Phil Ochs fan. That's some good stuff. I was also listening to bluegrassradio.org a tonne before they shut down, so I love bluegrass, even though I don't really know any names, haha.

I'm also a huge folk music fan. Both classic folk, and modern. Some of my favorite shows are the smaller ones, with local folk groups -- you never really know what to expect, and because of that they generally tend to blow me away with their sweet tunes... and nothing beats chillin around a campfire jamming with the musicians afterwards.

Some new neighbors moved in recently a bunch of kids..Anyway I heard one of them say the "N" word three times real loud so I treated him and his roomates to some of my music at well over a hundred watts per channel I started with the triple cd set "How the West was Won" Led Zepplin, then switched to Pete Seager, Woody Guthrie, John Lee Hooker, then to some Smothers Brothers, GrateFul Dead, and I finished them off with the Dixie Chicks...Haven't heard another word..I decided that the next time he does that I can do voices pretty good and I'm gonna talk shit to him like I'm Black.....Really freak his sh*t.

Peter Paul and Mary - Absolutely
Dylan - Of course he's Dylan his son is quite good , actually a better singer
Emmylou ..an angelic voice and timeless beauty
Joan Baez - at the very least she gave Dylan his break and has a pretty voice
Woody and Arlo - very much
Throw in Joni Mitchell, Shawn Colvin, Jennifer Daniels too as well as James McMurtry .

While I love many forms of music and art , for me a lot of it started with Folk way back in the late 50's.

I love the Bluegrass and the festivals. Nothing like singing and playing all night and seeing the SUN break thru the clouds at daybreak.
I have met a lot of the old country ones and had the pleasure of entertaining some of todays Top Stars when they where just kids, learning. And the music, the lyrics and the harmony of insturments and voices are one of the greatest things I have ever experienced in life. I do love the old stuff, and the 80 and 90 rockers who crossed over, but then it is the HISTORIANS that hold the heart. Country Gentlemen, John Duffy, Done Reno, Marty Stewart, EmmyLou, Wilma Lee, Jimmy Martin, Jody Rainwater, Dolly before she ever made it to Nashville, and Rhonda Vincent, as a very young mom, Alison Krause before she learned to play her fiddle....Oh those Memories....
Nothing is finer, than being in Carolina in the Festival Season!!!!
Love the thread!!! Keep on picking and grinnin!!!!

I play folk or whatever that means to someone else. In my mind folk is music played by the people as opposed to professional musicians playing folk style. There is as much talent in the parking lot as on stage at a festival. I spent ten years of labor day weekends volunteering at a Cajun and Bluegrass fest and at others. The Newport Folk Festival is in my city.
I love roots music of all kinds and cultures.

We have alot of concerts here also I would not mind seeing some but I hardly go out at night as I'm a cat dad and those cats are spoiled by their slave, me..I think I'm going to try and make the concerts we have in the park more cultural than folk but earlier in the evening...Gordon Lightfoot was one of the better artists I have seen..

Hi all,

I just noticed this old thread. And loving this music as I do, thought it might be worth mentioning some of the festivals where perhaps some singles gather :) Falcon Ridge www.falconridgefolk.com in the NY Berkshires is in a few short weeks. Always some great songwriters and jams. Can't wait :)

If anyone's going and interested in a POF meeting spot, just lemme know!
Peace and smiles,
Susan

You are aware that Falcon Ridge is decidedly lesbo-centric. I went there once and the man bashing from the stage by militant dykes get to be a real drag. I respect Mary Daub and the staff puts on a good fest but I would never go again. When we pulled in to tbeh campground I remember thinking "wow look at all the women this is great" wha wha wha wha, nope they're al holding hands. You must be the proverbial single straight woman we heard about. There is another fest in Rhode Island called Rythm and Roots put on by the same gang that is right at the beach with a great crowd.

love this stuff (actually wish I had been born a little earlier so that I could have enjoyed it it its heyday...)!

Saw James Taylor rock out last year at the Ottawa Bluesfest, but the best folk music festival I have ever been to was in Winnipeg...definitely worth a look. I was there once and saw a band battle between Moxy Fruvus and the Bare Naked Ladies. Don't really know who won, don't care, it was AWESOME music.

katarina witt's interpretation of where have all the flowers gone? still gives me chills. she said that seeger actually spoke with her about the choreography and preparation.

a truly great musician and songwriter finds his work in all arrangements, settings and applications. that makes a true artist as opposed to a 'pop star.'

I lived in suburban Boston for 23 years and often went to Johnny D's, a music club in Somerville, and Club Passim, originally Club 47, where Dylan and Baez and jug bands all got their start. It is a shame, however, that your index of folk musicians is still those commercial people from the early days.

If you are a folk music fan, you can listen to streaming on the web through WUMB and hear what people are doing now. You can also explore YouTube, last.fm and the Black Cab Sessions.

Here are some of the "newer" artists with links:

Kate Campbell http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wrmVNNFvwrs

James Keelagan http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wt7K6r3Ttf8

The Imagined Village http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qc7I5GLRz3I

Capercaillie http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWLZ4T8QqHo

and here are some long time favorites:

Paul Brady http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CD4eS2Xb6Ls

Garnet Rogers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0c3gA76uPQ

Garnet's long dead brother Stan http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqGv2l5bJr4

Richard Thompson http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdrG4tZf4uw

Gabriel Yacoub in his Malicorne days http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZR1rAWWH9OY

Christy Moore http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8J-X0TBZ0sM

Ralph McTell http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RUhiBvqIg4U

Fairport Convention http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jy3ihk205ew

Silly Wizard http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIseNLGKaY4

and, last but far from least, Steeleye Span http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZzmPbzwZ1o

This should take you close to an hour to listen to but it will be an hour well spent!

Can't resist. This is from Old School Freight Train and you will recognize the song from a completely different genre but what fun.

In..I found the Smiths, Jack Johnson. some Pink Floyd, some others in a dumpster the other day..I think I'm going to send some of my cd's to my Mommy She loves Folk, too..Cheers!

I like all the music you like (but not a great John Denver fan). I have to disagree about Grand Theft Parsons being a great movie. I thought it was horrible; made a joke of Gram's death.

I just realized I'm responding, like, five months later. :-) Guess this forum isn't too popular....

I love folk music, especially Peter, Paul and Mary, the Chad Mitchell Trio, the early Joan Baez, and I like some country, though I am pickier there. I like Denver's folk music, but didn't go in for his country music quite so much. I long Woody Guthrie's and Bob Dylan's songs more than I like their voices. I have quite a large folk collection, but rarely run into people who actually like folk or grew up with as I did.

While I haven't heard all the artists you mention, I am already particularly taken with Steeleye Span, Fairport Convention (in its original incarnations), and Richard Thompson (as well as his work with his wife Linda Thompson). I also have some Silly Wizard and Capercallie, as well as The Chieftains, Boys in the Lough, and some other British and Irish folk. I also enjoy The Washington Squares, Peter, Paul and Mary, and many others. Thanks for all the links.

Hey Byrf and other Folk lovers! Just thought I'd point out that the Woody Guthrie Festival started in Okemah OK today. I realize Byrd can't make it but thought some others who are closer might be interested.

Concerning "Grand Theft Parsons" Gram sure looked like he was enjoying the ride..Rather end up a joke than a stiff anyday..Yes, Folk music isn't that popular that's cause only 100 percent real Folks listen to Folk music...I love that Woody Guthrie movie, "Bound for Glory." that movie makes my feet move every Friday when I pick up left over bread from one of the food banks here in town and pass it out the best I can...Looks like I'll be back to pushing a grocery cart this week, exercise..Ever since I've seen that movie I've been looking for books on the Dust Bowl years, The Great Depression...How real Folks helped each other out, and listened to FOLK music...That's my story and I'm stickin to it. I've really enjoyed folk since I was a kid...I've been playin' it on guitar for years...there's a special feeling that I think I get from the songs I write and play that take me back to that time...

Someone said earlier there was difference between playin' folk and folk style...I simply couldn't agree more...it really has to come from the heart and its experiences...just an opinion...

Lots o' great things said here...

BTW I'm John, glad to be here...

Welcome John, I've been busy awhile but I'm checking in too bad about Mary Travers she will be missed. I just sent my Mother the Peter, Paul, and Mary greatest hits CD Acouple weeks ago. I'm working now and listening to John Denver, and Carol King, nice. Cheers!
