| No Grades in School!!?? Posted: 2/10/2009 10:43:17 AM | Haven't we already proven that this approach doesn't work ? By "this approach" I'm referring to the self-esteem movement in public schooling of course and that, after all, is where this idea's roots can be found.
I understand the basic idea here and at first blush it seems reasonable. Unfortunately , despite what certain academics have tried so hard to pound into the general public's collective head over the past twenty years or so , in removing every vestige of competition in public education they have also removed the will and desire for many children to do better (specifically , this affects boys) Aside from that , there's precious little evidence to suggest that self-esteem has been affected anyway. Basically we've not raised the standard but lowered it instead to make it more inclusive. This is folly because the whole point of having standards in public education which must be met is to ensure that every child has basic practical knowledge handy for his or her entry into the adult world. We are doing a disservice to our children with this pop-psychology flakiness. | |
