No matter what stress is in my life, I sit down at the piano and it's gone
I feel the same way when I pick up my guitar and play some Pink Floyd...it just takes me to a world in itself. I have been playing for 33 years but still find myself learning something new everytime I pick it up.

I haven't done so for 25 years, but I was so amazing at it back then that I reckon if I picked it up tomorrow and started hitting it, no one would ever notice my lack of practice. I really am a natural talent.
Seriously, though, I had horrible music teachers at school and that kind of put me off.

Music is such a passion for me. I was not graced with any talent. I didn't start playing until 2001 (age 25). It is such a part of me now, that I can't imagine what my life would be like if I had not started. It is my Mental Health, it is was gets me through certain days.

Studied piano for 5 years, a little guitar, and 4 years of music theory. It's my passion - I can't not do it. I'm usually with 4 or 5 bands each year. I love it. I hope to keep playing as long as possible.

| So why don't you play an instrument? (or do you?) Posted: 3/5/2009 3:55:12 PM | I played percussion in junior high. It was a prerequisite for marching band in high school. I had absolutely no desire to play an instrument...it is not my thing...but i had to because i wanted to be a majorette. So I chose drums...at the time girls were not allowed to play percussion at the school I attended. My mom actually had to go to school board to have them allow me to play. This was 1978. Now girls playing percussion is pretty common.
As soon as I got to high school, I ditched the drums altogether and twirled away.

| So why don't you play an instrument? (or do you?) Posted: 3/9/2009 4:26:38 PM | | I do play an instrument- classical piano-but I guess I understand why a lot of people don't. It's the same reason I don't participate in team sports or the visual arts. Just nothing going on there. I've run into so many people who were forced to practice an instrument when they had no aptitude or desire, and it bothers me that they felt they were forced to. I'm not sure what that accomplishes. I still feel I enjoyed playing the piano more because I had to beg to get lessons, not because my parents felt I needed them (although they did, they were just good at hiding it, lol) | |

I'm a terribly slow learner but one thing I did learn is that if you sit there playing the instrument for long enough it all eventually sinks in. You've just got to be stubborn. lol.
