Please someone tell me why this is ok, because its 'culture'?
not so long ago, children were stuffed up chimneys, most often falling to their deaths to clean them in Victorian England,.. until some people decided that was unacceptable and inhumane.
Anyone on here who thinks its ok to turn their back because its someone elses culture, or make peurile jokes about it, obviously has the freedoms and rights of free civilised society behind them.
Ladies,.. never forget that not long ago, this could have been us,.. or our daughters,.. and men on here, thinking its all a great big larff, well,.. try moving your family out to some of the so called cultured societies where this is common practice, and see how you like it then.

People often make light of a serious/incredulous situation because it helps us deal with it. No one is promoting selling children or stuffing them up chimneys. The people who are saying this is a cultural "thing" are not condoning the action, but pointing out what you are pointing out: barbarous acts used to be commonplace and accepted (and apparently, still are in some places).
As for the man in California trying to sell his daughter, it doesn't matter if it is a facet of his culture or not. He is in the US, and in the US, it is both illegal to sell another human being and for 14 year old children to marry. | |

no, devils daughter, not to the 'cultured' societies. The Imperialistic Nations are the cultured societies. And we have, indeed made our presence felt to nearly all people of other cultures.
The problem is that there is no respect, or attitude of live and let live for people of other ways and means of living. Often, their ways go back many many years...and while we may not agree with some of their ways...it is my feeling that we have done a damn good job of destroying life, than we have of 'understanding' it.
No man or woman, I'm sure in a modern civilized culture could conceive of selling a child to marriage, or stuffing a child up a chimney....and often what people fear, they laugh about. I honestly don't think anyone is making fun of cultures in a hateful way.
Now, a hateful way would be the way of the Christian Movement...plundering tribes and lands...and shedding more blood than all wars combined under the 'guise' of leading heathens to God.
Or, the taking of millions of Africans.....peaceful, earth and family loving people from their home country and importing them to be slaves to the 'cultured'
Or...the 'deal' that many Native Americans....or Aboriginal people overseas got....when we plundered their land...slaughtered them in droves...and in return, rounded them up and marched them to compounds called 'reservations', most of them in such dreary, cold god awful places that most of them died from the journey to their new prisons...not to mention the diseases we transferred to all of them.
Oh...it is always a nice thing to be PC and think of their way of life as being so oppressed, so wrong, in need of changing. We have successfully eradicated most of the ancient cultural families under the premise of leading them to 'freedom'
And just as you, and me, and many would not 'condone' selling a 14 year old off to marriage.....I say...maintain an attitude of laissez fair...it's none of our damn business.
Just as people from a third world nation would never, ever understand why an American Ceo, or shirt would spend 200,000 dollars on a wedding reception, that is 'our' way of sending a child off. Ask an Aboriginal person if he thinks it's ok to spend 20,000 dollars on flowers, 40 grand on a caterer, and 60 grand on booze.
they just might think that 'you' are crazy.

I am hoping that education gives us the right. I am hoping that our rights as humans are recognized.
The United States was founded on freedom of religion etc. not freedom to sell someone.
An adult is 18, a child is 14. A girl isn't normally capable of having children at 14 let alone fall in love with a man.

DD, I understand what you say, and it does bring on the helpless feelings similar to , "How can one person change World Hunger" just for an example.
while I don't feel complacent, not at all, I perhaps feel helpless, and sympathetic....
And, we don't always stand back and say....well, that is their way, who are we to decide', but perhaps we should. We still plunder in many ways...even today. Look at the recent debacle in the middle East. Yes, there was an attack on hallowed American Ground, and our Presidents popularity rose to an all time high after that, because he promised to get even. To plunder and pillage. Why, even Gr. Britain, and Tony Blair was joining in the let's get' 'em philosophy. Now, of course, we know that we once again destroyed homes, ancient temples, half of a country in the name of 'not being complacent.' But..oooops, it was the wrong country. And, it resulted in the trial and hanging of their President...ooops. But, at least we banded together, to destroy something in the name of non complacency, right?
I can't magically place myself into the Culture of the arranged marriage scenario...why? because it is not my culture. And if it was, then I wouldn't be me...and it may not seem that unusual.
I don't think a soul living could watch the world news and feel smug about anything that's happening out there. So maybe we're all trying to arrive at an answer to ...what is my purpose, in life then? What is it? How can one person start to effect positivity?
I know what I do, in my small way, to help those that are less fortunate...but how can we all band together? I am asking, seriously Is there something more we can do than respond to posts about 'why my girlfriend left me', and 'Im really a good guy", or, how come guys leave if you have sex with them on the first date.
What do you do to help the cause?

Butttt...ummmm this person was arrested for trying to buy someone. The US is trying to make sure that children are taken care of, it is up to the citizens to make sure that we do take care of our children. It is up to us to keep the government we voted in aware of what we think they should be doing.
Thankfully I don't see fear in my childrens' eyes. I do see my teen son talking to classmates about how we need to pick up some more socialized attitudes such as health care.
I can only hope and pray any culture that would allow a child to be wed that is under 18 is educated on what a child is and how they should be treated. That buying and selling of any human, no matter the age, should never be sanctioned for any excuse...
And no one ever said, "let them eat cake." You can't believe everything you read in history just as you can't believe everything you read today. | |

You are inherently contradictory. On one hand, you try to portray a persona that IS jaded and apathetic: "I sneer at EVERYTHING," not some things.
You label yourself the "Devil's Daughter," a name you chose for yourself, a name which aligns itself with dark forces (if one believes in such things, I don't), and the ultimate rebel who bucks ALL things sacred.
