Bang the rabbit for 10 mins with a tenderizer
a .22 is quicker and a more humane way to put a rabbit down bro...just sayin

Shot gun work's well too, Hard to miss. Unless you really suck..
only trouble with a 12 guage tho is those damn pellets get stuck under my dentures...no matter how well you clean the squirrel theres usually one pellet that you miss

| Squirrel and Rabbit recipes? Posted: 6/15/2009 9:09:05 PM | yes i do whatsallthis...well i used to quite a bit when my son was younger and we used to do father/son things...now hes too independant for poor old pops... getting back on topic here...him and i used to hunt quite a bit too...i bought him a pellet rifle when he was 12ish or so just so he would feel like a hunter when we went out...did lots of target shooting and taught him a few lessons on how to have respect for whatever you are hunting...i popped a squirrel once and we ate it...just as a lesson not to kill anything you dont plan on eating...(or unless it really really pi$$es you off...lol)... he has his dads quirky sense of humor too...often times when we were out hunting and came back skunked...he would refer to it as..."hiking with rifles"... | |

I have 5 Squirrels in the freezer. Red, Fox and Gray. Each one has its own taste. I like BBQ and spicy. So I was wondering if there are any real men left who still hunt and fish that might have a good recipe?
Ahem... how about a 'real non man' who still hunts? lmao
Over here in the UK greys are vermin. Our Reds are being wiped out due to the squirrel pox carried by the greys - they are not natural to our country and seem to be immune to this pox but it is killing off our indigenous Reds at an awful rate - so much so that some counties in the UK have a bounty on greys.
I do my bit and hate waste but in my limited experience -
Fried Grey - Dry BBQ Grey - Dry Oven baked Grey - Dry Boiled Grey - Dry
I will be trying out the recipes already suggested though, they sound really tasty and if anyone has any tips for skinning them I'd be grateful too, after loose skinned rabbits I find them quite difficult.

Skin and clean the rabbit and squirrel, then wash in several changes of water. Cut into desired pieces for serving. Bring the 2 quarts of water to a boil and add the rabbit and squirrel. boil for 1 hour. Add salt, onion, lima beans, bacon, potatoes, tomatoes and pepper. Cover and cook slowly for another hour or until tender. Add the sugar and corn. Continue cooking for 15 minutes. Mix flour and butter into a paste and add to stew. adjust seasoning as desired. How many squirrels would it take just to make one family meal? I think I would rather take the life of one larger animal that will feed us all winter like a moose or elk then a whole bunch of squirrels for one meal.

| Squirrel and Rabbit recipes? Posted: 10/29/2009 6:14:42 PM | We have the small North American red squirrels and flying squirrels both not large enough to bother with from the lunch standpoint unless you are in survival mode. Now ferrel rabbits are over running the town. As it is in town I generally live trap them and give them live to friends about 10 miles from town who are tying to keep some on the yard in direct competition with the foxes
Our wild rabbits are snowshoe hares. Generally snare them on runs in the winter and they taste quite good.
Now grew up chasing jack rabbits on the prairies and could not find a way to cook them that was anything short of leathery. A few years ago I was over at a friends who had cured some rabbit in left over ham curing brine. Fried up tender and tasted great. Jacks are big enough that they are worth while hunting. Over 10 lbs live weight are not uncommon.

| Squirrel and Rabbit recipes? Posted: 11/1/2009 4:25:25 AM | A great trick is to pressure cook the squirrel or rabbit first, then flower and fry. It comes out real tender and you can still make gravy
Another good trick although tedious is to de-bone the little guy (meaning cut the rib bones out, leaving the flaps) and stuff the body cavity with deer burger/ italian sausage/ or ground beef, mixed with onions, peppers, herbs and spices, then bake in oven.
