Completely off topic and a twist.

While it is great to see more and more of us coming out of the Broom closet, there is a definate downside to it all. That downside being the Fluffies. The poor unfortunates who have no idea what Paganism is all about and are simply in for it for the magic or whatnot, you know the kinds, the people who run around with the tackiest Penticle they could find and carry around bags full of goodies and advertising that they have a coven and are looking for people to join it or what not...I must say that if I see one more gothed out 15 year old claim to be a pagan (or satanist for that matter), I'm going to scream.

Not to say of course that there aren't genuine goths who truely believe in their spiritual path, or that every teenager has no idea what's going on, but there are so many that aren't even thinking about the spiritual side of any of this, and that is the main point, isn't it? Yes, the extras are nice, yadda yadda, but to me, they really aren't important at all. The knowlege and the awareness and the spirituality of it all is what's important. Getting to know ones self as well as their path is the important part, in my opinion.

I myself tend to say that I'm an Eclectic Hedge Witch, more along the makeshift route, all of that, you know. Herbalism is my forte (thanks to my mother) and I'm continuously learning more and more as I go. But, especially here in Rochester, it's difficult to come across those of a like mind, or mentors for that matter, but if you're bound and determined, you can do anything.

I actually have been crafting a lot of Tree of Life shirts and such with my mother as of late, a lot of goddess symbols and have found a wonderful tree of life with the goddess as the trunk and working with that idea. I'm definately more into the idea of the earthen concept than mass amounts of dieties like some are, I've always grown up with the concept of loving the earth and such, so it was a very natural concept for me. But yes...dabbling in this and that, learning all I can learn from whoever I can, whether or not I apply it, or believe it is another matter. After all, no knowlege is bad knowlege.

By the way...Namaste is something my mother says as well, Serena...it's good to hear it.

It's all very strange to me, though I know there must be more than I ever can even dream about.

I'm attracted to sand, sandy paths, dunes, beaches and so on. Has that got anything to do with these religions?
Tell me more, but keep it simple, as I know nothing and I can't follow this thread.

Kitten and everyone,

I use that greeting because it reminds me of what I'm supposed to be doing...looking for the divine in others as well as within me. I'm glad you enjoy seeing it.

I can recommend some books if anyone is interested. Perhaps you have these already. If not, they are a good place to start:

The Great Cosmic Mother--Monica Sjöö, and Barbara Mor

The Great Goddess--Jean Markale

The Living Goddess--Marija Gimbutas

The Language of the Goddesses--Marija Gimbutas

The Chalice and the Blade--Riane Eisler

When God Was a Woman--Merlin Stone

There are many, many more resources. I can also suggest that if there is a Unitarian church in your area that there may be a UU Pagan group associated with them. They can offer resources and information too.

Namaste,

Serena

RabidKitten - you are on the right track here - the fluff are tools but definitely not required. The
awareness and spirituality
is indeed what we aspire to. The form it takes, in its many colours, leads us all down many paths, some more solitary than others. And yes, its that determination that keeps us on the path, regardless of comments from the peanut gallery. Stay true to your heart/hearth.

"God bless you Peagans!" Just kidding folks...I had to, it was a Homer Simpson remark.

Does being native american count as old time religion? I don't know what exactly I should identify as or how to refer to my path other than "walking the red road." When I'm around other natives, the issue never comes up because we all seem to be on the same page, but it kinda stumps when when people ask what religion I am.

Ehhh! I am me and that is all I need to be. ROCK ON!

Native Indian lore and culture....religion, if you will....very old...very spiritual. Not enough written about it, nor taught. I've known some who swear that it is the only path for them, because it brings them closer to the earth, nature, and the spirits that seem to guide us all through life. You are very lucky NB....enjoy the ride!

Thanx....now I need to go pay my respects at a casino! HA! If anyone is interested...I have posted a poem about one of my experiences being a native...it's a bit dark, but so was the experience. I participated in the "ghost dance" for 6 years...from when I was 9 to when I was 15. Hiking up a mountain to dance in an arbor for 4 nights in the cold bitter rain with no shoes and no rest is difficult for anyone and it creates bond and friendships that last a lifetime.

On-line buddy went to the casino last night and walked away richer. Dang him, he's lucky!!!

Thinking I may need to improve my luck a bit and work on that sometime soon when I have the place to myself.

good thread... i, myself, am starting to study this. i feel it is the only 'religion' (for lack of a better word) that does not penalize/judge someone for their beliefs or for doing something that comes natural to them.

Good point - as we now sit "above" the ground, rather than on/within it, we've lost touch with the natural realm, and even the basic rhythms of life.

I was down in New Orleans a few years ago, and this Tarot Card guy
came up to me and asked if I studied "The Craft". I said "Ah, no..."
He says "Well you should, you'd be good at it". LOL!

I do find it facinating... but I think I'm too much of a skeptic. I have a
hard time believing in things that aren't backed by science. Thats why
I don't believe in Christianity...

I admit I'd like to read more about the Wiccan Religion though...
I've always thought it was an empowering belief for women,
unlike lots of other organised religions.

im a practising shamon

Funny enough, although I know that pagan religions are the non-mainstream religions, I always considered native american spirituality to be mainstream.

i have been a pagan for a very long time. i'm originally from oklahoma, and am mostly cherokee/choctaw. i really miss my home stata. it's a different world, where it's considered cool by a significant number of people to NOT be christian, where almost nobody litters, where a lot of people still live off the land and refuse to use any more technology than they absolutely have to. "air-conditioned indian" is a really bad thing to call someone! i live in the deep south now and really hate it. there are very few peole sown here who are capable of practicing tolerance. most of them think that "tolerance" means towards other kinds of christians. people who are real nice to you change their attitude in a hurry if you let them know you don't go to church, let alone that you aren't a christian. i have never been "in the broom closet", but i don't get in people's faces with my beliefs either. always found that to be annoying, no matter who's doing it. the town i live in wants to make halloween illegal! it's nuts, and it sux. there are a few pagans down here but unfortunately, most of the ones i've met are the fluff type referred to earlier.
i don't subscribe to any particular path, and what i believe is a mix of indian shamanism, ancient druidism, and zen. i read a lot, and unfortunately much of what can be found in the new age section of a bookstore isn't much better than the national enquirer. it can be hard to read through the garbage.
some good books i have found: the mists of avalon, by marion zimmer bradley -fiction, but the lady did her research. i usually recommend this one to newbies, because it's informative and entertaining.
the crone:woman of age, wisdom, and power, by barbara walker
power of the witch, by laurie cabot - the "witch of salem", one of the "eye of newt, toe of frog"types, but this book does the best job i have ever seen of using quantum physics to explain how magick works. she teaches a science of witchcraft class in salem.
the witches' way, by janet and stewart farrar, intensely cool people.
the dancing wu li masters, by gary zukav - quantum physics for laypeople
the tao teh ching, by lao tzu
the art of war, by sun tzu

this is the first time i have gone into the religion forum. it's nice to see that i'm not alone in here.
blessed be.
