Lol, I think a DDoS would fit perfectly right now.

It'd be very easy too. Because everyone's on the damn site, hitting refresh ...

Here's an idea!

STOP DOING IT.

You're screwing with his servers' processing capabilities when it has to deal with your requests that it cannot process either way.

Just leave it alone, check back every half hour or something.

Go outside, for a walk. Do whatever, just come back "later" lol

Lol, I think a DDoS would fit perfectly right now.

Don't give the kiddies a stupid idea :P

But yeah, I'm sure that the constant slamming isn't helping... can't even imagine how much its being hit right now, with the number increasing as more people try to get on here to see their emails. I feel for the hard/soft -ware when the site does get up... guess it'd be a good stress test though.

So far, I've taken a nap, watched 3 movies, reprogrammed 1400 lines of nightmarish script code, walked the dog, pet the cat. But I do hit refresh ever so often... maybe 30-45 minutes apart.

Is there a place for forum games? :) LOL

Added to the list of care package contents for admins/mods dealing with this:

several kegs.

One person has made useful comment in the past 2 days, thank you. Ok, maybe one or two other persons did too. Gees, the rest of you? READ THE THREADS! If someone said the same thing as you, then you include that in your post. OH I know "I don't have time to read a whole thread". OK, lazy ash (make sure you let us know that in your profile description too), then just READ THE FIRST PAGE, until you find someone who does say the same thing your about to waiste our time with.

Thanks ARE in order .. but it is also an opportunity
Posted: 3/1/2009 9:28:50 AM
I agree that thanks are in order but just MAYBE it is time to re-examine the site's infrastructure and/or architecture. If you have only had one major outage in 5 years you are astoundingly lucky and with the size of the community here you will inevitably have more.

I am sure that you have failover and redundant servers and all of that good stuff but if you don't it is probably time to start pondering it. In most shops where I have worked we looked at a system failure as an opportunity to see if we could improve something. It was always a good exercise, even if we didn't find that there was anything that could have been done to prevent the outage at least we felt good that we understood our systems a little better.

Just offering a thought from someone who has been there.

is this POF's birthday??? I was actually looking for that info this morning, when the site was started...as in the very first day of operation! See if I can find it in search, now that we are running again.

ps...did a thread search, but came up with nothing about pof beginnings...any suggestions where to look? OK...found the fact sheet...started 2003, but no month or day listed there.

It'll be back...the mods who are working on this will know IM isn't yet back as they will see the same as you..they are also members of the site.

Emails are working.
You can send an email..and then go to MSN.

so I suspect POF's day of creation is around then, if not that day...
and how wonderful too to bring together so many people in so many ways!

Thank you for working so hard and diligently. Glad it appears to be a hardware issue which is usually easier to resolve than a software problem.

Now please... go and "try" to enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Bet the Admin has had very little sleep trying to fix the issues.
That's a computer for you. Temperamental machines. Live and learn eh?

Thanks and hey this is a good time to get off our butts and explore the world on the other side of our front door. Who knows some of you may meet your

POF is 6 years old today...

Let me know if there are any other issues. To fix the software issue yesterday I had to delete all my replicated databases and start over. So lots of wierd issues are possible that will take weeks to track down.
