| Why Florida? Posted: 5/28/2009 9:56:45 AM | Why Florida? Why not Florida? Born and raised in Missouri and Iowa. I lived in Iowa for 24 years until I got divorced after 21 years of marriage. Then lived in Tennessee for over 3 years. That totally sucked. Things were not working out at all. I had never been to Florida before until I moved here (long story). Didn't have a job and no friends down here either but after getting settled in after some time things started to change for the better. Even though my son and daughter and my 4 grandkids and all of the rest my family are still in Missouri and Iowa, all of the friends that I have made down here has become my extended family. Never in a million years would I have ever dreamed of living down here and be able to experience the the things that I've been able to. I'm doing things down here that I would never have been able to do had I stayed in the mid-west. | |

| Why Florida? Posted: 10/23/2009 12:08:17 PM | I was born and raised in rural central Alabama, far north of the Florida border (about halfway between Birmingham and Atlanta just south of I-20). It was a miserable, depressing experience to say the least. I could go on and on about it but I won't.
My parents took me on vacation to Disney World when I was 6 and it was the funnest experience I'd ever had up to that point, so my 6-year-old brain said that Florida must be the greatest place on earth. (Sort of like how around the same time I played my first season of organized baseball and the best guy in the league was the only lefty so my 6-year-old brain said that to be a great player, you must be left-handed, so I became a left-handed batter.)
At the time, I actually didn't realize just how bad life in rural Alabama was going to become, but as the years passed and things got worse and worse, I think I started romanticizing not only that vacation but the whole land that surrounded the vacation place. I became a fan of the University of Florida in a state where the Alabama-Auburn war ruled so it was pretty natural that I would eventually end up a Gator (thanks to a National Merit scholarship, because otherwise, I never would have been able to pay for the out-of-state tuition). After graduating from college, I returned to Alabama briefly and became outright miserable very quickly and did everything I could to get myself back into Sunshine State, despite the fact that I knew by then Florida was certainly no cure-all for my social plagues, but God knows it's 1000 times better than Alabama.
One thing was for certain: even had I not made that trip to Florida at 6, I would have been scrambling to get the hell out of Alabama and go somewhere not part of the deep South where I could live with less misery, but I think it was that Disney vacation that put Florida over the top some 12 years later.
Plus, I can't stand the cold (not even Alabama cold, much less true Northern cold) and was sick constantly growing up, so I knew I had to move to some place warmer, and Florida was closer to my family than California, Arizona and Hawaii. I've rarely had colds since I moved to Florida, so that theory must have paid off -- yet it's still too cold (had to run the heater earlier this week for God's sake!), so maybe my next move will be to Havana.
Ironically, I don't even care much for Disney itself anymore and have only been to it once since I moved to the state despite never living more than 2 hours from it.
But I'm still a left-handed batter, though.

| Why Florida? Posted: 10/23/2009 5:50:46 PM | | I was speaking to a local Baptist minister a few years ago and we were talking about me having relocated from the north. I had already been here over 20 years and I asked him how long before I'd be considered a southerner rather than a "yankee". He said "just standing in the garage doesn't make you a car" | |

| Why Florida? Posted: 10/26/2009 3:39:02 PM | Excellent post idea!
I grew up in the Milwaukee area and moved to South Florida as a single woman in '95. At that time it was still laid back and I love the weather and the ocean. It just does it for me. However, now that this area's grown and is no longer a place for a "nice girl from the midwest", I'm actually looking into relocating elsewhere in this state. The whole laid back atmosphere is long gone from this area.

| Why Florida? Posted: 10/26/2009 5:38:39 PM | I grew up in the burbs of Detroit, I got frostbitten going to high school and made plans then for "Some place Warmer and Greener" I went thru a Carpenters Apprentiship in Clearwater and have never looked back!! When jobs got scarce I went "Overseas",Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia, something about Fla. still brings me "Back Home" Retired a few years ago, but now am stuck with property, Chi, Ind and Mich, when it eventually sells, I plan to raise me some Tangerines, Straw Berries and Watermelons!! I hope to see if I really have a Green Thumb!!
I've loved the State since I moved here in 71, when I got out of the Army!! I did pick up Surfing while in the military and when the Huricanes blow in, I'm usually out on a wave, being screamed at by the Coast Guard to "GET OUT OF THE WATER!!" What a great RUSH!! I believe that "only the Rocks, live Forever" and what ever Fate has in store for an ending, I hope to meet it head on, with a "Smile from Ear to Ear!!" I want everyone to know I enjoyed every moment I had, while I was here and I did not have to many regrets!! Live live like you are dying and it won't surprise you when it comes!! OR Take your choice!!
