| 'There Probably No God, now stop worrying and enjoy your life' Posted: 3/6/2009 6:52:31 AM |
The Bible contains God's words and part of that is a moral code While I have read the Bible, and definitely believe in a higher power, I am not following my faith so blindly to lose sight of the fact that the Bible was written by men and edited by the early Catholic Church.
What makes you say that He is judgemental and picky? (Not attacking, just answering a question.) There are various points/stories in the Bible about God casting judgement on the population (the flood ring a bell to anyone?) Old and New Testaments.
I think both ads are great if they make people think and debate. I did go through a time where I did not believe. Any foundation I had crumbled beneath me. I have been building it step by step. Some of those steps included reading the entire King James Version of the Bible and attending religious services.

| 'There Probably No God, now stop worrying and enjoy your life' Posted: 3/6/2009 7:01:13 AM | Isn't the beauty of free will is that we get to choose what we want to believe in? I've made a choice, I'm pretty okay with my choice. I don't need to defend my choice to anyone just like most of you.
I agree the ads are controversial.. but they do open up discussions in which many people have not engaged in before and I have learned some things about people even in this forum I didn't know before.
Have a great weekend everyone!!! It's FRIDAY and I strongly believe in WEEKENDS.

| 'There Probably No God, now stop worrying and enjoy your life' Posted: 3/6/2009 7:46:02 AM | it seems to be a consenus that most people think god is bad because he cast judgement on evil people. yet when a man, casts a judgement and wipes out a people, hes hailed as a conqueror or an empire builder dont you kinda think that maybe, just maybe, that since (according to the bible.)he created us , that only he actually has the right to judge us and destroy or raise us up where exactly a puny little man gets the balls to actually place himself above gods judgement is actually quite funny. and actually theres an example in the bible of another guy that had the same idea. and we know what god said to him i dont know the exact spot, however it was something about god asking the little man if he can make it rain or command the wind to stop blowing. thats the good thing about the good book tho , in 99% of all debates held by anyone anywhere, theres an example of a similiar one within its pages.if you look for it.
morals i think are taught from childhood by parents.most morals and behaviour patterns however have their roots bound in one way or another to someones religious beliefs, be it the parents, neighbors, or grandparents. there hasnt yet been an example by anyone on this thread that told us how god had actually destroyed or limited their livesor made them worry so , so far, the bus advertisement is just a grandstanding attempt by some puny little group with a few dollars to spend

| 'There Probably No God, now stop worrying and enjoy your life' Posted: 3/6/2009 8:03:46 AM | It seems to be a consensus that you're consistently missing the point of the argument here.
So instead of holding god to a higher standard, you're comparing him to war-mongering leaders of the past who have gone to war and created empires.
I'll say this right now, if that's the moral standard you're setting for god, I'm well above that, and I'd wager that everyone involved in this debate would consider themselves is too.
You keep backtracking and moving the goalposts of your argument, so it's fairly safe to assume you'll just continue to do so, and make your own straw men and assumptions based on things no one here has ever claimed.
I'll say it again, just so I'm clear: I have never claimed that god ever did anything bad to me, or had any negative or positive direct influence on my life. If he had, that would be pretty great evidence of his existence, and as such, I wouldn't be an atheist.

it seems to be a consenus that most people think god is bad because he cast judgement on evil people I never said I believe God is bad or casts judgement on 'evil' people. I said the Bible portrays stories of this. My actual beliefs are entirely different.
yet when a man, casts a judgement and wipes out a people, hes hailed as a conqueror or an empire builder We have no right to judge whether it be good or bad. I have no more right to judge you than I have to judge Hitler, than I have to judge my parents, than I have to judge Ghandi, than I have to judge Mother Teresa, than I have to judge God. While many do it, no one has the right to... but that is my opinion only.
morals i think are taught from childhood by parents Morals are personal opinions. What is moral to you (eg. hunting or fishing for food) is not to me (vegetarian). We can have morals different from our parents and our children (eg. marriage and divorce).
Being raised Catholic, I used to worry about God's judgement. While I am quite the tame prude now, I wasn't always this way...
Now? I have gotten over my history and try to have no regrets.

| 'There Probably No God, now stop worrying and enjoy your life' Posted: 3/6/2009 9:50:58 AM | well ubber. you seem to assume things are aimed at you, well heres an idea. theey arent , general consensu refers to the vast majority of comments, . the thread isnt all about you or your personal opinion , and neither was my comment
as far as backtracking. well at least im making original comments, not just attacking someone elses , without actually saying anything that speaks about myself
I'll say it again, just so I'm clear: I have never claimed that god ever did anything bad to me, or had any negative or positive direct influence on my life. If he had, that would be pretty great evidence of his existence, and as such, I wouldn't be an atheist thats fine your an atheist, umm i dont really know what that has to do with or against anything ive said, as im not an atheist or a christian or a member of any organized religious doctrine. i just put a quote in there that talked about worrying, and yes atheists are an organized religion of sorts what exactly is clear about your comment tho?i read it 3 times and it says absolutely nothing in any language.
I have never claimed that god ever did anything bad to me, or had any negative or positive direct influence on my life. If he had, that would be pretty great evidence of his existence, and as such, I wouldn't be an atheist whats that supposed to mean?is that support for not believing in god or is that suppossed to offer me a reason to believe in atheism?
im still waiting for something or someone to validify the bus billboards. they arent even sure enough about the stupid banner to assert that "there isnt a god". they say that " there probably isnt a god" oooh these people must know something and really have alot of faith in there beliefs would you marry someone who " probably" loved you? im not arguing your right to not believe in god or mohammed or the tooth fairy im arguing the dumb billboard and the terminology it uses to say that anyone believing in god is misdirected and worrying and not enjoying their lives all one has to do is break down the sentence to realize how redundant it really is
there probably isnt a god ............ well there might be a god too ........., whats the point here?
now stop worrying and enjoy your life this is assuming all god fearing people are worried all the time and not enjoying their lives, which is in no way provable or accurate, i know lots of god fearing people who have great family lives, they go on holidays and are alot more family oriented and loving than alot of other people with no faith or beliefs
if this is the way atheists are trying to gain more members id have to tell them to go back to the drawing board and rethink their advertising ideas (assuming this billboard is being financed by atheists

morals arent personal opinions, they are behaviour patterns, patterns formed over time and thru experience and being taught

| 'There Probably No God, now stop worrying and enjoy your life' Posted: 3/6/2009 10:06:33 AM | It's funny that you're quoting a quote of mine and then saying that I "never say anything about myself"
You keep changing the subject of the argument and continuing to weasel out of actually conceding any points made, and instead keep bringing up new ones every time someone argues against them.
Adding to that, you're ignoring the whole point of the advertisement, which has been explained about ten times now in this thread.
It's pointless to attempt any sort of rational discussion with someone who is unwilling to consider an alternate viewpoint, especially when they refuse to directly confront any points brought against them.

| 'There Probably No God, now stop worrying and enjoy your life' Posted: 3/6/2009 10:29:52 AM | lol i quoted it , not because it made sense. but because i was merely asking you to explain it. apparently i didnt make the question mark big enough lol.
i watched that movie religulous, that was great( if you get a chance , you should watch it, its pro atheism), i loved the way the guy attacked and tried to disprove god. and it was hilarious watching so called religious teachers drop to the sides as they really had no explanations, biblical ones or any other sort. that however didnt mean or shgow that there wasnt a god, it merely showed how blank and unfamiliar those teachers were , when it came to defending their faith.i was more impressed with the atheist and his knowledge of the stories in the bible and the way they merged with stories from 200 yrs pre bible (mithra etc}
i dont see how ive even once changed the subject, in fact i only disected the subject and tried to figure it out using the words they use to push forth a statement.im not invested in any side of the topic. im just asking for someone to actually stand up and defend a side with something. just because i believe in god, doesnt mean he exists and just because you dont, doesnt mean he doesnt exist i can accept we are both wrong, however that shouldnt ruin the argument lol. cmon its -20 outside , not exactly sun tanning weather

| 'There Probably No God, now stop worrying and enjoy your life' Posted: 3/6/2009 10:50:43 AM | Actually, I did see Religulous back in October in theaters.
While I may disagree with some of the things Bill Maher says, I did like the movie for the point he was trying to make.
It would have been a bit better pulled off had he actually told them the point of his movie in the first place, and told them what the film was really going to be about, because otherwise, it's no better than the whole 'Expelled' movie debacle. I won't get into it here, but it helps to actually be honest about the point of the documentary at the outset, otherwise it comes off as offensive and intellectually dishonest.
As for my quote, what I was trying to counter was your statement about people blaming things on god, and the fact that I have never done so. Plain and simple.
As for the ad campaign: The words they used are used to fall in line with what has been done elsewhere in the world. They originally wanted it to say "There isn't a god... now stop worrying and enjoy your life" in the original ads in London, but the transit authority there wouldn't go with that, so they dulled it down a little, and it got accepted.
The point of the matter is that it's an ad, on a bus, that someone has decided to pay for. The fact that this particular ad is getting scrutiny, and outright banned in some cities, says a lot for the religious minded and their inability to accept criticism of their beliefs, or even to allow simple freedom of speech in this country, which is protected by law.
Is that enough of a defense for you?
|
| 'There Probably No God, now stop worrying and enjoy your life' Posted: 3/6/2009 5:03:44 PM | well i agree , the movie was a hoot tho , and i really enjoyed the banter and the funny way he went about semi exposing the zealots
are we tho,. going to entertain everyone when we allow one group to put forth provocative banners /advertising campaigns? what nect will be allowed. perhaps anti iraqui or anti black or anti muslim campaigns on busses, these things never end well no matter what the message and really is a bus or a public transportation vehicle the best spot to place these advertisements?. i dont find the ad to be a criticism of god.i do however find that it is a little bit of an attempt to get a reaction , and in this heated society . do we really want to get the religious zealots upset and on the warpath? nothing good will come of this ad campaign, it isnt meant to invoke deep thought or anything helpful. in its current stance, its meant to irritate and poke fun at a sensitive subject, even though i dont believe in the so called" holocaust" ideology, it isnt my right to billboard it and pay to advertise my opinions. which this ad plainly is
freedom of speech is fine, as long as it doesnt impinge on the rights of other groups. noone would allow a similiar message aimed at jews or muslims. so why are we to allow them to attack any other form of religion? christianity will sink itself, . it doesnt require bus billboards to help give them the ability to say they are being persecuted

To each his own, whatever makes your boat float, but are they stating that if I believe in God that I'm not enjoying my life? OP -- No one is stating anything...YOU are perceiving or interpreting your OWN conclusions from one simple sentence.
And then taking it on a tangent, and running with it.
My take is this is the smartest advertising move of my generation. It's only a pity that Edmonton isn't taking the opportunity to get involved as well. Probably the only time I'd give Calgary any props over Edmonton for anything.
The ad itself is a genius marketing ploy because it's not a statement as much as it is a call to action...a call to expand our collective minds and start questioning those that have force-fed us "truths" all our lives. I was ahead of the curve there, as I questioned these "truths" before I was a teen. So much in fact, that it got me kicked out of a "forced march" to Sunday School. If I had realized that questioning the "Bible" would see me being told to leave and never come back, I'd have done it years earlier.
That's the end result of calling BULLSHIT on someone, or something...you question their "truths", proving you have freedom of thought, and they simply won't stand for that nonsense at all.
Kinda puts the whole forgiveness and non-judgementalism into question, that these "believers" are all about, eh?
Guess I'll be goin' straight to Hell 'cause I questioned "God". Who knew exercising my brain would be so damning...
On the plus side though, at least I won't be among the many mindless drones out there that have people do the thinkin' for them...I won't be anywhere near their herd when the end of days gets here, and they're all sittin' around on the side of the eternal highway waitin' for a "God" that obviously doesn't know how to use MapQuest.
I'll always prefer free thought over being told what to think. I'll always prefer questioning "truths" instead of accepting them at face value, as-is, and avoid having to do any thinkin' for myself.
But if "God" wants to provide me the truths in person, as I'd expect Him to...He can always drop by and we'll go for coffee, and I'll write it off as a consultation. He does know where I live, right? Oh wait, nevermind...the MapQuest thing...my bad.
If anyone sees Him, tell him to get His people (I think they're referred to as Apostles) to call my people, and we'll do coffee.
In the meantime, I'll head back to enjoying my life without borders or brainwashing.

a call to expand our collective minds and start questioning those that have force-fed us "truths" all our lives lol it isnt a call to action, its merely an attempt of a single minded group to getpeopleto pay attention to them and another outdated idea how many people do you think aregoing to read that, then look deep within themselves and say" hmmm ya know what nigel, maybe we have beed misled, maybe we really did evolve from a monkey" and this great leap in understanding will do what? thats what i am curious to know. the same people claiming war and militaries have been here thru out history, and are necessity to us all are the same ones claiming faith in a creator is outdated and silly
kinda amusing how they are willing to throw out god and his actual"positive messages" and replace him with a monkey wielding a machine gun to usher in the new world order of man the ex monkey
as far as being a genius marketing ploy, hmm well marketing it is,id imagine its slightly plagiarized, as it isnt a new sentence, and it by no means is in any way impressive or in the least bit original id like to see the samepeople put that message on a bus in baghdad saying there is no uhammed see how quickly they get deevolved
Guess I'll be goin' straight to Hell 'cause I questioned "God"[/quote} well im afraid your knowledge of actual scripture is a tad off base,i highly doubt you actually went over to gods house and questioned him either questioning a person about god or his intentions isnt questioning god, posing silly statements isnt questioning god either actually , since you claim you dont believe in god....who exactly is it that you questioned? "regardless if you believe in god or not , just enjoy your life" that would have been a far better comment to be placed on a billboard or bus In the meantime, I'll head back to enjoying my life without borders or brainwashing. oh we all know evolutionists havent been brainwashed at all , neither have christians or scientologists or anyone else. no borders? what does that refer to?, id like to know what someone is able to do by not believing in god, that cant do by believing in him. murder, rape, pillage, divorce, all the vices are just as available to the faithful as they are to the faithless. really , there isnt any benefit to not believing in a creator. when an evolutionist gets married.............. do they hold it in a swamp?or maybe a tar pond. do they say there vows to an auto mechanic or perhaps an ex astronaut...im just a little curious to be honest.

Outdated? The writings and stories published about alternate theories are authored by people proven to exist, using fact as a basis, fact btw that is documented with proof. The writings on this train of thought go back a few hundred years at most, not the thousands of some other literature.
The long story short version is, that man needs to feel that he knows his origins, if one chooses to believe in creationism, that is no less valid than evolution, as neither has been proven beyond a doubt. The quest for answers has gone on throughout time, and will until there is a definitive one. Humans, by nature, require proof.
Ancient people have explained our origins in many ways. Christians, with the bible, Greeks with mythology, Natives with spirits and mother earth. Who can honestly say that they know who is right? Maybe the crazy wino on the streetcorner is the one that is right, and heaven is a purple bus with a monkey conductor that farts lollipops. When we find out, we are in no position to tell anyone.
