Chances are if the punnishment is severe enough then they will only reoffend once.

So why is it that in places like the USA where they have some of the highest incarceration rates in the world, in some not very nice places, the crime rate is not a lot lower? This is also true in states where capital punishment is still on the books.

it is not nice to be locked up 24/7 with no escape from other people ,noise, smells, and the same walls and faces day after day.

Well, including my travel to and from work - I spend at least 10 hours per day looking at the same faces every day, with the same noises, smells etc

Living in a falt I pay for the privilege of hearing my upstairs neighbour going for a pee at night or having one of her many "boyfriends" over.

Putting my telly on I have to pay for both TV License and electric.

I pay for my rubbish to be colleceted every Monday and I have to make sure to put it out on time.

I pay for the privilege of getting to/from work with my nose under some other commuter's (often unwashed) armpit.

I do not go to the gym as it is not on my doorstep, I am too tired after WORK to go there and I can not really afford it - not due to low pay but due to other expenses that creep up somehow every day.

I so often wish somoene would take care of the daily chores for me so I can stop worrying about things - just for a bit.

If anyone is interested in supporting me via their taxes or in cash - please feel free to contact me.

I will be happily locked up, have my food delivered, my clothes washed, my bills paid etc....

Considering it costs £28486 to imprison someone for a year i dont see how the "forced labour" arguement holds true.

Would be very easy to say they are working off thier debt for living costs. Gets round that pathetic aspect of the human rights convention.

pay them £0.50 an hour or something eqaully pathetic into an account available on release. That way it can be used both as a punnishment and provide a small amount of cash to set themselves up when they leave (especially important for those with no homes to go to, otherwise crime becomes immediately appealing again)

Doesnt have to be "breaking rocks" as some have said. how about assembling wheelchairs, renewing rubbers on crutches etc, make handmade furniture, wooden packing crates etc. I would say making post sacks but machines do that far better these days!!
