Are we a tad spoiled by POF and a bit ungrateful for its services? The time we spend clickety-clicking on this site, and the content we provide to it, puts the ice cream into the big fish's cone.
He built it, we came. He gets rich, we get entertained and distracted.
Now he wants more ice cream and is just trying to figure out a way to get it, is all. No mystery here.

| Serious Member / Paid Upgrade Thread - Are we a tad spoiled by POF and a bit ungrateful for its services? Posted: 3/13/2009 12:05:23 PM | My apologies it has taken this slipper wearer some time to find this true thread (and they wont lock this one, they are indeed fair and actually listen).
Upgrade
Point 1. Members make any/all sites….along with the creator. A simple poll would have established clearly if we would like to have seen a) a donation system b) upgrade option c) more or less good/bad ads
Point 2. Arbitrary people have been chosen, irrespective of time on site as being upgraded. This should have been handed out, if at all, to people who have been on the site 5-6 years as a way of thank you and trial basis for feedback, stats and figures. Or, indeed to those have contributed greatly and supported it vocally over a sustained period.
Upgrade - the point is proving being somewhat serious/real (which is a good theory as few sneak type will dish out bank details and defend it to their S.O.). The arbitrary part of point one negates/contradicts the whole purpose in a spurious fashion
Point 3 lack of knowledge say 1%ish were handed a free upgrade option thus fuelling an incorrect or percived demand. Secondly if I email a gold now, then I am almost certain I will think she had been given it free. However, outwith forum regulars and word of mouth most people will be unaware of this fact.
Thus anyone who upgrades or mails and upgraded member is never fully sure whether that person paid or begotten it free and therefore serious/real by its own initial definition.
Point 4 the gift sytem failed. Again if members were asked. It easy to tell why. As any guy will say he get almost no first contact email ever, or a reply rate of between 0-40% for good or bad emails.
Any website success is based on a simple formula. Girls get emails. (wickedshoe theorem touches on this). And guys go where the girls go. And girls go where they get most email(attention). Not subtle but a true hard fact for most.
Point 5. Tis too expensive, my 10 quid of muffin money might be equivalent to a rich persons 100
Point 6..there are only a handful of good true sites remaining that are free. In my eternal time online I have seen the simple demise of a couple of good uns. Point 7
Better minds than me will attest to all of the above
Perhaps she will add to this, be nice to see her here as her opinion carries much weight. And I bet she didn’t even get an upgrade.,,you can weigh in too witch ;)
Sorry me maam came in and whipped me 3-2 at wii golf I shall add no more ever but thread track so ran outa steam sorry

Just curious as to why that is.. I have no problem with the gold thing but why girls get it free and men have to pay... almost feels as if its a catch to get men to buy it

| Serious Member / Paid Upgrade Thread - Are we a tad spoiled by POF and a bit ungrateful for its services? Posted: 3/13/2009 1:00:28 PM | Awww, how sweet and loyal!
The issue is not really about the feature itself...it is the IMPLICATION that dishing out xx amount of dollars, makes one a "serious dater" or "serious member." (In it's conception, it was being referred to as "serious DATER." "Serious Member" IS LESS OFFENSIVE in my eyes!) All it DOES mean is that, someone forked out xx amount of dollars.
It's not so much about the annoying "POF Pox" in my mailbox, either! It's that that yellow dot does not mean JACK. For example...Markus has one. He is not here to seriously date...he has a girlfriend. Maybe he is the exception to the rule? Obviously, as the site owner....it is logical for him to host one.
I am only one single person, but I am sort of offended by the insinuation that *I* am less than a serious member/dater! I have shown my loyalties and "serious-ness" as a member by hosting huge events (some up to 600+people) in the St. Louis and surrounding areas and being responsible for large membership drives. It was once suggested that the regular hosts get some sort of "badge" or "recognition" on our profiles...not for the "pat on the back" aspect, but to identify us as knowledgeable, informed, and a support network for others who had questions about hosting. I have brought in other local hosts, as well.
Nope. No can do...hmmm...makes me wonder if I pay xx amount of dollars per month, if he would consider creating a little host icon?
Nope...not questioning MY LOYALTIES to this site. I give to it, as much as I get from it...probably give a lot more, actually.
Edit to Add: I think POSSIBLY the girls that get it "free" are just one of those Markus doled out some freebies to get the whole thing going...sort of prototype sorts? I am sure there are men who received such too! ;)

| Serious Member / Paid Upgrade Thread - Are we a tad spoiled by POF and a bit ungrateful for its services? Posted: 3/13/2009 1:02:09 PM | ok..here's the deal......
dudes will attest I'm sure.......there's more flakes then Kelloggs here!
Huge list's of demands, requirements and deal breakers, make it virtually impossible to contact any woman above say a 6!So many here are already in one way or anther "attached", yet still come here to "play", WHY????....just because they can! Cleavage, "teddies" on beds," bar stars ", ego stroking and plain old BS is rampant. 500 "favs" on a blank........all be it, bikini pic'd profile. People STIL posting "model" shots. 40 year old's, still looking for children from men that have no kids or never married????? (really??? seriously???? Good luck with THAT! Married dudes, "internet firemen", headless six packers , and the "look at me with my children" pics. JUST PHUCKIN SAD!
Bringggg, bringgggg, briingggggggg...........that's the Clue phone...........GET IT!
I do 100% believe people are entitled to their own choices, standards and requirements, but come on.............SERIOUSLY!!!!!!!!! I don't even bother sending out messages anymore, there just is no point.
In a manner, I understand where Markus is coming from. The above taints the waters here. There needs to be a way to weed out flakes (both genders). I could to a point agree to his premise of paying, I doubt I would personally, but I understand the logic. Even if it is a cash grab, SO WHAT. The point I don't understand, nor ever will, as posted before, was handing it out randomly or selectively to individuals. Sorry dude, but you shot yourself in the fin on that one.
now, I just call it like I see it, if you're offended, again........then you're probably here for the wrong reasons! I've been here for years now, and it just seems to be getting worse, not better.
*sigh

| Serious Member / Paid Upgrade Thread - Are we a tad spoiled by POF and a bit ungrateful for its services? Posted: 3/13/2009 2:27:43 PM | I didn't pay for the Yellow Icon that says I am "seriously" looking here! I have been serious from day ONE. I think my PROFILE states that well. Just how does a Yellow Icon tell others how serious one is? And I couldn't care less if I have advertisements on my profile. So what else does one get for ones money? How can you get more responses JUST because you have a Yellow Icon? Do they hold back emails and only give so many to ones without them? LOL And would you NOT look at the profiles without the Yellow Icon? If you are SERIOUSLY looking you will look at ALL the profiles from people in your area! But, people WILL fall for any new gimmick!
All in all, I am staying and doing as I did before. Hoping someone for me will come along and I can get OFF here!!
It is more than likely about making money! DUH! Isn't that what a business does? If it is greed or not, doesn't matter. I think though it wasn't a wise choice or way of doing things, but I guess businesses learn from their mistakes too. Mate 1 has Online Ambassadors (OA) that they give service free to members or pay them to email ones who don't keep coming back with the pretense of "helping them" through the site LOL.... So here they just might give the "upgrade" free to ones so it looks like some are actually buying into this so others will really buy into it. Other sites do similar things to draw people in. I think its gaming and false and should be beneath a good business to do such things, but that is my own opinion. Yahoo Personals has been accused of such things, so has American Singles and many others.
One way of the other, no matter what, they are doing it.
YOU each have a choice. Pay, or not! If they eliminate services and expect ones to pay they will be like all other pay dating sites. They will certainly have to change the bragging line how they are the biggest free site now, since they are not really totally free now. Other sites are half free for this or that, but they dont brag on being totally free. Some brag they are free to sign up (most are lol). Just not free from then forward, lol. These sites hook in the newbies continually to keep running, not the long term customer who leaves after paying and getting no where. I paid for a few sites in the beginning after my divorce. Never again. I will not do it ever again. It doesn't give you anything BETTER! Nada, nothing, zich! Liars pay to get fresh meat. Scammer, creaps, cheats and all the low life are on pay sites too. I ran into several. You need to be a good weeder and know the red flags, not be naive to think paying will make it all okay. It's plain stupid to think you won't find those types on pay sites!! You need to use your brain in your head! All the same people show up on the free ones, half free ones, and the pay sites. POF isn't the only free one. It however, has been the most successful one. I have NO idea why the owner wants to mess with that!
But, it IS his site and he can do anything he wants. AND it is YOUR choice to stay or go.
Like others I was pissed and upset that he did this, and as far as I am concerned it was for greed. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. But as I said, stay or go. It is his site to do what he will with! I chose to stay. I enjoy the forums and keep hoping to find the "one' for me. And I have been to a few meet and greets.
Best to everyone, and happy fishing here, or elsewhere!

| Serious Member / Paid Upgrade Thread - Are we a tad spoiled by POF and a bit ungrateful for its services? Posted: 3/13/2009 8:25:57 PM | My understanding is that no one that had the "serious member" badge a week ago when they were introduced had paid for the "upgrade".
I think it is currently "false advertising" to say these are "serious members" since they didn't have to pay but where offered having the logo on there profile to "fool" others into both noticing their profiles + "fool" some into paying money for the "upgrade".
Maybe the next badge will be "really serous members" when the dool out cold hard cash.

| Serious Member / Paid Upgrade Thread - Are we a tad spoiled by POF and a bit ungrateful for its services? Posted: 3/13/2009 10:37:35 PM | | If anyone was going to make an upgrade feature, it better actually provide something aside from a gold dot, it's not like the "serious members" are getting anything special aside from being bumped to the top of searches which really doesn't matter. The people I have seen who actually spent the money for the little dot I wouldn't call serious, more like desperate which is sad when you think about it. What a waste of money just to try and garner some attention to your profile, doesn't mean someone is going to contact you. | |

Billy Brennan: You have to believe me, this was a stupid decision but I did it with the best intentions. Dr. Grant: With the best intentions? Some of the worst things imaginable have been done with the best intentions! You know what, Billy? As far as I'm concerned, you're no better than the people that built this place.
Simple solution to the whole picture..........add the option to try the serious member badge for a month FREE. at the bottom of the 3 months, 6 months, and a year. A level playing field then.
POF wants to take on the role of Cupid and play match maker, I just might take on their challenge and buy a Serious member badge, so the advertisement that shows up while I'm on here, MEET LONELY MARRIED WOMEN will disappear, while I'm SERIOUSLY trying to find someone to talk with on here and some day in this life time meet in person.
Simple solution for that site too, get a D...I....V....O.....R.....C.....E, THEN go sleep around and not be a lonely married woman anymore.
I still don't seek out yellow dotted profiles. While driving, the yellow light means CAUTION!

| Are we a tad spoiled by POF and a bit ungrateful for its services? Posted: 3/14/2009 3:16:37 PM | the integrity of the principles at 6 years has never been compromised. I dont really understand the extremity of knocking it. And I am certain he dosnt have a gold bath :P.
Simple put we know no married/cheating person, save meagre handful, would dare explain to S.O. why they have a debit for a dating/friends.forums, networking site (that is its primary purpose, secondary being to rid bad ads).
Whilst I chose personally to pay, I would rather have donated. (no my email didnt go up, i am a bloke we get little email ever ;)..its just the way the net is. But if I was looking I would like to know who was really real...and would therefore favour upgrades firstly...perhaps even with an bona-fide sensible mail. And I dont doubt for a moment a girl would pay more attention to a gold mail thingie.
Again I feel supporters, exception of me, being here a long duration would be best rewarded. certainly not arbitrary hands outs...as i mentioned in earlier post.
Mods do have a hard job, they do it voluntary, and sure we dont always agree but that just the way it be. But they do actually listen I have found.
And in my lifetime ive prob sent a cpl hundred here...including my own twin sister Its still by far the best site (incidentally free) out there or in the UK.

| Are we a tad spoiled by POF and a bit ungrateful for its services? Posted: 3/15/2009 6:42:55 AM | Perhaps it's just me being cynical, perhaps I'm right, but most people I know struggle financially right now, so to suggest a site that has been free for so long needs cash when there is an income of several million dollars is quite frankly ridiculous. Greed does funny things to people and although I do see a need for weeding out the deadwood on the site, I really don't think getting people to pay makes that possible. How does the fact that I can't afford to waste my money on ifs and maybes that there is a snowball's chance in hell, that someone will take a blind bit of notice to the fact I'm going one better than the next person, by being idiotic enough to pay for something, that in fact doesn't really give me much. The reality, people is this - the only way to tell if someone is a serious member/dater/whatever you want to call them, is to talk to them, meet them, strike up some kind of relationship with them! It certainly isn't done by giving someone a gold star with a pat on the back while saying 'Well done, you opened your wallet, that makes you a better person than all the other people who haven't.' What constitutes a serious member? Money? I don't think so. | |

| Are we a tad spoiled by POF and a bit ungrateful for its services? Posted: 3/15/2009 6:57:45 AM | Did "Serious Member" just become "VIP Member"? I just looked at a profile which had a "VIP Member" badge. But then checked out another gold star and found a "Serious Member". Is there a difference? I would have expected all existing badges to cutover if the name was changing.

| Are we a tad spoiled by POF and a bit ungrateful for its services? Posted: 3/15/2009 7:10:50 AM | Have a look at the Admin thread in the Relationships Forum.
http://forums.plentyoffish.com/datingPosts11968938.aspx
For those who pay, you can choose to be known as either a VIP or a Serious member - same difference.
The Relationships thread is interesting because it looks like that is where Admin is testing the water on what features paying members would like.

| Serious Member / Paid Upgrade Thread - Are we a tad spoiled by POF and a bit ungrateful for its services? Posted: 3/15/2009 3:13:07 PM | | Just out of the curiosity of it i have messaged 15 of the women local to me that have that serious (joke) badge on there profiles just to see if it would make any difference when it comes to who answers messages and who doesn't. I personally will stick to writing the women who don't have the badge. I have had better luck with those. Out of the 15 only one answered and that was just to turn me down. I've been here for 2 years and women usually answer me. But so far the ones with the badge seem to be the ones who are the least serious instead of the most. It's almost like sticking a red flag on them that says "Don't waste your time". If this thread is still allowed to run without getting deleted' When i get to 100' I will come back over here and post how many answered and how many didn't that has the "Serious" badge. How can anyone be serious or be taken seriously that can't even muster up a answer? | |

How can anyone be serious or be taken seriously that can't even muster up a answer? Why would a "serious member" badge make anyone more likely to answer an email? The badge/money spent means they are serious about finding someone - the *right* someone, for *them*. Not keeping every happy who tries to email them.
In fact, I would suspect that serious members would be even more selective about who they are willing to communicate with, to avoid wasting their time with those contacts who are obvious (to them) mismatches from the get-go. But once they decide to meet someone, they would be less like to "flake" and disappear.
At least that's my take on how a true serious member would operate on here.

Unless there was a creditable news release or the owner of either establishment told you directly or made a public statement - then it's all hearsay from the forum gossip hounds.
