| POF starting the long slow slide to a Pay-only site? Posted: 4/8/2009 11:58:04 AM | Never going to happen. I'm a webmaster and I know a thing or 2. This site would need to be completely redesigned. That's months and months of coding and design.
Not to offend anyone but 80% of the people are here because it's free and if it came down to money they would join one of the bigger sites... Yes that's right. There are much bigger sites then this one.
I don't know how many members are here but there are a lot. POF would have to let them all go in order to make this a pay site.
This is a nice little cash cow. They done a great job on it and I don't see any reason for them to change it now. If anything, they would design another site. Make it a pay site and advertise it from here. Your option to join or stay here.
But they could charge a small fee for your own personal blog. Something that you can change the colors and have larger pics... that would work out just fine and I think people would pay for something like that.
If I was given the option to pay and be allowed to edit my own profile any way I see fit. I would probly pay for it no problem. It gives me a little bit more to do and blogs are so very popular now days... That's a winning idea.

| POF starting the long slow slide to a Pay-only site? Posted: 4/8/2009 3:19:11 PM | I sometimes flip through forums, but this one struck a nerve...
The site is free. From everything I understand, it was started as a fun thing, expanded to a greater area, and thanks to advertisements, turned into a little bit of profit... To make it a pay site will have most members turn away, losing the revenue stream created through advertisements. Very few new members would join, as it is missing the polish and appearance of a paid site. There would also be the general animosity towards something that was free becoming pay-per-use, turning away additional people.
I can't read Markus's mind, but I don't see that happening (Another site as a side project, "partnering" with PoF, maybe, but other than that? Bad business sense to flip it).
Being a "serious member", yes, it is a fee, HOWEVER, there should be a general sense of "This isn't some shmoe who's sending out hundreds of email, hoping to get a bite... this [guy/gal] is (more?) honest and is trying harder, more sincere". Should isn't always though.
For every person who pays for a gold-sticker to show they're serious, there's an idiot out there who's sending mass emails and creating issues... Somewhere in the middle is the rest of us, wondering "Would it make a difference?", or "My words speak to my intentions, I don't need to pay to get that across"...

There's other free dating sites. Both of them offer free blogs, one you can only post 2 blogs a day and the other I believe no restrict. One has forums, the other doesn't. Both are better than here for features. You have to login twice, once to get into my account and if I choose to post into the forums I have to log in again. It gets annoying when you get automatically logged out in a short duration.

| POF starting the long slow slide to a Pay-only site? Posted: 4/18/2009 10:05:56 AM | | They sign you out to speed up the server. Otherwise it would be drawing to much bandwidth. Having you signed out makes things run faster. Some very busy sites even give you a 404 page saying that the server is too busy. That's why they do it that way by having you signed out. It's kinda' sloppy for them to handle it like that tho. They could get a better server. But even Deviant Art has this problem. Millions of people all signed in at once can put a beating on a drive. Think of it like this. 100 people trying to use your computer at the same time. What would happen ? ... lol | |

| POF starting the long slow slide to a Pay-only site? Posted: 4/18/2009 3:50:48 PM | I am one of the 'serious' members. I was emailed and told that it was 'free' for a year. I'm not sure why I was given it, as I have only been on the site since Dec 2008. Do I see any difference? NO. There is no more advertising when I log in.
So how many of the 'serious' memebers are actually paying? Because I have not heard from anyone so far who has paid!!! Perhaps Markus is testing the waters - so to speak????

| POF starting the long slow slide to a Pay-only site? Posted: 4/18/2009 4:00:09 PM | I don't know what you mean by "Serious". I'm "serious" .... Sometimes : ) I don't know what you are saying at all ! Free for a year ? I been here for 5 years and was never asked to pay. Are you saying that you are paying for this site ? Or did someone give it to you for free ? This site IS free as far as I know... Did I miss something ?
I missed something , I just know it !
Awwww !! I see it now !! I didn't know what the hell you were saying... LMAO ! Sorry Doll !

| POF starting the long slow slide to a Pay-only site? Posted: 4/18/2009 4:10:43 PM | I'm rarely serious - which is probably the biggest joke around! Perhaps the gold circle - and why is it a gold circle [there are no references to fish at all about that??]
So I don't know how to answer you 'residentevil' - as I did not pay for anything, did not request any 'serious member' designation - but I do have it next to my profile now. And the email from Markus said this 'free' - serious member gold circle would be next to my name for a year?????? I have not paid anything - nor would I. So, back to my original question - who is paying?????

| POF starting the long slow slide to a Pay-only site? Posted: 4/19/2009 7:37:51 PM | i was confused also when i seen that section, i thought it was just a part that was more intense and more questions for serious serious users, then when the credit card popped up i was like hot damn!,
i really don't care if he has a section for payed members as long as the free section stays here. we all have to survive economically, hell if i could have a dating site and make money i would do it. but i did not like the intro about when you pay people think you are more serious etc, when you STILL have the FREE section sitting right here. a bit condescending.

| POF starting the long slow slide to a Pay-only site? Posted: 4/20/2009 12:50:41 PM | I must admit that I didn't know anything about that "Gold Serious Member Stamp".. It's kinda like saying those who don't have it are not serious (Just kick them aside)... Give me a break. I been here for a long time. I went to all the parties that promoted this site and even took photos that were featured here .... So where is my Gold Stamp ??
I don't really want the stamp and I don't think I would take anyone more serious if they had one. Not to bash this place but everyone I use to know here are all gone. The posting rules are way out of line. It use to be fun to post here but if I don't say everything I need to say in the one post then I may not get a chance to reply for days or not at all if the thread is not popular...
They say it's to cut down on chats... hell , That's the most fun and they took it away.
It's easy to see by looking at the forum threads that not much posting goes on here anymore... At one time you could make a post and within a few hours it would be on page 3.... Now threads stay on page one for days or even weeks. They screwed up and I'd like to see someone admit it !
There are people who use to be on this site that worked hard on putting together HUGE parties and promotion POF but they got nothing for all their work and some of them are even banned from this site today. That's bad blood and bad business ...
See that poster above "Firmbear8" who posted all the smilies ? I know people who were given strict warning not to do that. I can't be sure but I think some of them were even banned for it . He's been here forever and he knows what I'm talking about. Sorry for draging you into this Firmbear... hehe. But where is his gold stamp ????

i am SO glad that you are not bringing this piss-poor attitude to the dance next month.
some of us DO care about what happens to this site - because some of us are lucky enough to have found value in it.
and that's something you'll never understand...

everyone I use to know here are all gone
ResidentEvil..........there are more of the "old timers" left here than you know.......they just don't participate in the threads anymore because of the restrictions
events are tame now because one has to watch what you do......but having said that i'm still here for some of the events and for the friends i've made and still making
just because i don't have a gold stamp on my profile does not mean i am not serious about dating......but i can express that in my own way thank you very much

| POF starting the long slow slide to a Pay-only site? Posted: 4/22/2009 6:47:17 PM | | Hmmm...I'm a tad puzzled by all the pay site talk...I saw Markus (POf's founder) on the CBC a couple of weeks ago and when asked what he thought the future of online dating was he replied more free dating sites...in other words he sees the future of dating sites having more free sites so why would he contemplate doing himself in by doing the opposite of where the future market trend is going....by keeping it free and getting "per click" advertising, he gets more traffic and therefore more clicks than anyone else with pay sites and therefore more revenue so he's onto something with that. It's like the basic sales rule - the more doors you knock on the more sales you get and by being free he allows his advertisers more door knocks which allows him to receive maximum return from advertisers....teepeeone | |

| POF starting the long slow slide to a Pay-only site? Posted: 4/24/2009 9:57:19 PM | | Too bad he can't make this site decent with proper searching and matching features as well as other things that the paysites have which could be provided and in turn draw more people to this site because it would be free with lots of good features. | |

| POF starting the long slow slide to a Pay-only site? Posted: 5/12/2009 5:30:02 AM | I agree with you it happens frequently. The sadest part of this is the women are usually still alowed free everything but the men have to pay. Lavalife I was a member for over 2 years and even paying didn't guarantee you an answer to your reply. I think many of these dating services are a scam. The women because they get to join for free you see as a man what choices you have and are expected to pay for it.
If POF goes pay see ya Im outta here I won't waste my hard earned money on this. Maybe a good idea would be if you could find honest people is that if someone met due to POF then they be requested to give something in return for the chance of the introduction.

| POF starting the long slow slide to a Pay-only site? Posted: 6/12/2009 6:04:47 AM | Now that's soooooo funny!!!! No wonder you're always smiling :)
This dating site should be fun and being able to feel at ease interacting with others. A paid site is not going to change peoples' attitudes. Hmmm.......a gold star.....what we're back in school again. LOL :)

| POF starting the long slow slide to a Pay-only site? Posted: 6/12/2009 6:44:02 AM | How do I get rid of this silly gold star? I fell for it thought it would help, sometimes it does. But I like the rest of you hate having to pay thats why I joined this site. One of the few things in life that is FREE. One day I'll meet someone and I won't have to use things again paying or not.
