Whiskey Woman

I'm not a 12 year old. I just have a hard time with spelling some things. It doesn't make me stupid or anything. Why don't you learn a second language and spell everything correctly!!

Rice and beans is not only cheap, but a meal that provides fiber, complex carbs and protein which are all important elements of a healthy daily diet. Beans and brown rice are also lower on the glycemic index which means that you can control your insulin levels better and in a more natural way should you get gestational diabetes.

Most foodbanks have these dry staples. Depending on the state you live in and your income eligibility you can get these free at your local foodbank.

flavor variations for beans:
-add a smoked hamhock for great flavor
-add a can of crushed tomatoes
-a chopped red bell pepper adds nice sweetness and will disintergrate down into the beans.

To help with gas which some people suffer from when eating beans:
-Soak your beans in water overnight.
-Drain all the water and rinse beans.
-Refill your pot with fresh water
-Bring to boil and then turn down to gentle simmer. Froth will collect at the top. Skim off and discard any froth that is released. You will find that gas issues will dramatically decrease.

Lentils are also great for you and very cheap. However I find that they can be bland and most people tend to cook them with a lot of spices to add flavor. Strong aromas are often a real turnoff during pregnancy. Cinnamon and curry are commonly added.
You could try cooking in chicken strock.

Take care.

Child,If they had an ALDI supermarket in your area, it would help tremendously when it comes to saving money.I can save about $30.00 a trip there! And yes, they do have alot of good stuff, but it's just cheaper. In this economy, those of us who cannot afford to live high on the hog can learn to live good and feed ourselves while taking advantage of the bargians you find in your gorcery stores. They just recently plowed up up some sweet potato fields around here where I live, I have to go out there and get me some.My family loves sweet potatoes. We can get them for free right out of the fields, too.Everybody takes advantage of it.
Please look around in your local area and see what grocery stores are there and if they do have an ALDI store,GO! It will save you money!

Just about any bean, lentil, or split pea soup made from scratch. They are nutritious, proteinaceous, filling, and cheap. You get a lot of bang for your buck. You can make a big pot, freeze single serving portions, and pull them out for a quick & tasty meal. Also, the suggestion for rice & beans by a previous poster. Cheap, filling, and balanced.

Check out a copy of The Complete Tightwad Gazette from the library. It is a complete collection of six years of a newsletter that was devoted to frugal living. There are some very good suggestions in it and I particularly like the essays. Adopting the right attitude is just as important as having specific suggestions.

Make sure your meals are balanced and that you're getting adequate protein. You need good nutrition for both your health and the health of your baby.

Learn to cook if you don't already. Buying prepared food is more expensive.

BTW, also educate yourself about nutrition so you can get the most bang for your buck. While onion soup is nice, tasty, & cheap to make, it's not going to offer you much in the way of nutrition. You need to make sure you're getting decent quality protein. A lot of cheap food is high in carbs and offers little else. Eggs are an excellent, inexpensive form of high quality protein and coupled with something more filling could provide a fairly balanced meal.

Frozen vegetables are going to be a better source of vitamins than canned.

Really, find out what resources are available to you, including nutrition education.

Good luck.

Go to Costco or Sam's, and get beans and rice in bulk. Season 'em up, just not too much salt. Get your prenatal vitamins while you're there. A little fruit (buy and freeze in bulk), and get on WIC to get cereal, milk etc. if you qualify. Skinless chicken in bulk packs a punch too, freeze and divide. Same with greens, but cook em first. Skip the McD's and other fast food! Drink water, or dilute your juice at least 50%. No soda or fake "juice" (sugar water)!

Beans, rice, noodles, potatoes, oatmeal.

The vegetables are costly, but frozen ones should keep a well rounded meal under a dollar. Frozen fruit juice mix is great, too.

Maybe check out AFDC, or aid to families with dependent children, or WIC women/infant/children programs for more financial assistance. It's there. If you qualify, go for it! My brother said it was a godsend for him and his kids when he was injured.

As for getting a good bang for your buck, you can go to the grocery store first thing when they open and you can usually pick up meat from yesterday for half price or less, which would be no different than if you bought it last night and took it home and cooked it today...

Total cereal with milk. Go easy on the salty stuff. Drink mostly water. And you may qualify for WIC (Women, Infants and Children), the supplemental food program or something similar depending on where you live. (ask your doctor.) Don't be shy about dropping in for dinner with friends, too. I'm sure they will be happy to share - what better cause. If you have friends who work in food service, sometimes they can bring home leftovers. If you have time, you might even pick up a part-time job at a restaurant where one or more meals may be provided. Shop in bulk at Costco or Sam's, and divide and freeze portions. If you can, buy rice and other staples in large sizes too - much cheaper. Maybe you can plant a small garden too, indoors or out . And, food pantries are an option too. Good luck and I know you'll have a happy, healthy baby, if you don't already.

Also pick up the book America's Cheapest Family by Steve and Annette Economides. Many ways to save $$, not just on food. Those people are fanatics when it comes to saving money.

And ignore the evil posters who try to bring you down. I don't believe you're a fake or an attention seeker - and we call all use the good information in this thread - unless you're Donald Trump.
