Folks, just because theres a pic of someone holding up a piece of paper with their username on it does not make it them.

Agreed, Ms Allison. But, perhaps it COULD help cut down on all the OLD photos that are displayed as profile pictures. I see that as a much bigger problem then the photo being of someone else entirely. The newest trend in false advertising I see lately is men using an OLD photo as their profile picture and then once you view them their recent photos show up.... now much older looking, heavier and grey/bald from age.

Just a thought.

That's FAR from a new trend AND women do it too. Using old photos on personals profiles has been going on since internet dating started. I've been on & off dating sites since '98 with a couple of nice LTR's in between. Over that time, nearly 60% of the women I've met in person had used old pictures on their profiles. I even went to one woman's home for a 1st date and when her mother answered the door, I asked if "xxxx" was home? She giggled & said, "I'm xxxx!" Her logic was that when men met her, they'd overlook her 10+ year old pictures because of her sparkling personality. However, her personality was anything but sparkling and I couldn't help but feel like I was deceived right from the start. Obviously, there was no 2nd date.

I fail to see the logic behind this - it makes absolutely NO sense to me at all.

Maybe I've been jaded because of so many women having old pictures, but at this point, I very rarely get excited or even expect much from a 1st meeting. If the woman actually looks like her pictures then I consider it a bonus...

BTW Miss_Allison, I like you much better with hair!

I think you're lulling yourself into a false sense of security if you accept this as evidence.

OMG... Great case in point...

I still see the only way to really be sure of who you are talking to is before the first meet of for that matter when you are interested ask very nicely to do a Webcam session. I also think it should be done with voice since that can also be faked.

Face it folks, if a person really wants to scam another in any way, shape,or form then they will. It is up to us to be a bit more wiser and cautious.

Navigator. I had a similiar first meet way back he was at least 25 years older and 100-150 pounds heavier..He really didn't see where he had done anything wrong since at my age I should be grateful for any man's interest.

Maybe I'm missing something but how could this cut down on old pics?
(unless you're gonna do like kidnappers do when they are trying to give proof of life and have them hold up a newspaper showing the current date on it too - and trust me, even that can be faked)

I dunno, but maybe I'm old school and think that if we are to force stuff like this, that it would be going to great extremes. I like to think of this as a dating site and not a super regulated institution. As it is we already have enough rules to follow. I also think there comes a point and time when we have to accept some personal responsibility and do some of the legwork ourselves instead of expecting POF to do it all for us by forcing users to go to extremes. As someone else mentioned, viewing someone live on webcam tells you instantly if the person is being real or not.

Additionally I think its best if we approach all things with online dating with caution. I think its dangerous if we rely on any type of filter, rule, etc to protect us and screen 100% for us. Just my 2 cents but I think its better to be overly cautious than to have a false sense of security.

well thank you - did you notice i've been tanning too!

Personally I like to have a telephone conversation with them as they are on cam so I can see em and hear em!

Fake profiles and images are identifiable with a knowledge of machine language
and the source of the "cookies" that emanate from them but the problem is to
discover who the "real McCoy' is and who is the circulator of the "fake".

The 'real' person responsible for the fake profiles uses them as 'bait' to see if
the viewer displays interest in the fake profiles as well as His/Her then discarding
the person who is interested in His/Her if interest is shown in the fake profiles as well.

There are some really "disturbed" individuals on this site just like any other site
and they manipulate the existing site conditions to their (disturbed) advantage.

Pretty sad really!

Navigator, I don't know how you overlooked the red flag flying high in the stiff breeze of the woman asking you to her house for the meet-and-greet.

Fake pictures are pretty easy to spot. Old pictures can be sussed out by asking the right questions. There are plenty of both on this site.

Stay away from the one picture, perfect lighting pictures altogether. And always ask for more pictures a few emails in if they only have a few pictures. This is the digital age. Everyone has more pictures than they're showing on their profile.

I agree Miss Alison...
I usually ask for their phone number and do a reverse directory on it so I know that checks out once I hear them on phone a couple of time. I like the webcam and voice.

I guess I have been fooled a few times too many and I am going to be sure since I do live so far away from most and I am the one that usually does the traveling.

You're kind of right. Normally I would have never meet a woman at her house for a 1st meet & greet - big red flag. However, it had started to snow during the day that we were going to meet and by the time evening rolled around there was about 3 inches on the ground. She text messaged me and said that she didn't want to drive. Since I have 4wd & she lived literally 3 minutes from my house, I figured I'd offer to pick her up.

Anyway, lesson learned. Next time I'll just postpone if there's snow & the girl can't make it to a public place.

I am the one that usually does the traveling.

*heavy sigh* I guess Pennsylvania is a little out of your traveling range, huh??

As you've cleared that up, I'd consider that an extenuating circumstance, Navigator. That was actually pretty nice of you.

Fake pic is one problem, I've seen people who showed me fake web cam as well. It's so hard to spot fakers nowadays.

What on how to fake a web cam session??

Well I could invite George Clooney or Brad Pitt over for a couple beers and have one of them sit at the computer and chat with ya on my web cam. (wink)

Hmmmm where did I leave Brads number anyway?? He loves Budweiser and I just bought a 12 pack.

Ok, so the point being that some ppl put up photos of a friend then have the same friend do the camming ... and all this before a meet when it will be eventually found out that it was all fake? Ridiculous!

some softwares allow you to send prerecorded videos through your messenger account. there's actually a website where people can download these videos. guess what? this means you don't have to have a camera to cam on messengers and you can virtually pretend to be anyone.

That would be really easy to spot as bogus though. When they are supposed to be responding to what you type and stuff. Might work great to have Pamela Anderson do a strip tease on web cam but ..... Hardly going to fool anyone sharp when they are supposed to be typing and responding to stuff in a chat session.

I think my idea of having Brad stop by would work better.

Ridiculous yes, but this has also WORKED. A while back a woman from the site said that she had been corresponding with a guy for a while and they eventually decided to meet. At the agreed upon meeting place "the" guy showed up looking just like his profile photos, but quickly explained that it was NOT his profile. In fact, it was his brother's, at which time a shorter, heavier, less attractive version of "the" guy walked up. The older brother explained that his younger brother was shy & not confident about his looks and that's why he used his older brothers picture on his profile. Now, at that point, most women would have said, game over. However, this woman was sympathetic to the younger brother's plight and agreed to have the date with him!

IMO, even though there was no 2nd date, she made a big mistake by agreeing to the 1st date. The guys weren't called out on their deceptive behavior and probably continued the bait & switch/trap.

What, that's not you miss allison? different lighting conditions? blue, maybe not your colour?

cripes... you are a funny little missy.

tough issues, if one wants to use an old or use someone else's photo, they are going to do it.
sounds like a heap of policing from POF to insure (not so possible) that the photo is current and the person attached to the profile.

a quick skype call with video... it just seems that a few like to show, or bear all on the cam... ohno. ohnothanks.

As my man TrappedonBayStreet noted, there are A LOT of dysfunctionals on here, with fake pics/profiles, you name it. Perverts who harass serious and mature users by sending them suggestive PM's....I really wish the site could get rid of all of those losers. Especially the ones who sign on again and again under new names/pics. Talk about nut jobs.
