We are not happy as a people about what is happening in Iraq or Iran or Afganistan we too want peace and love in our country and in the world

| Catholic vs. Protestant Posted: 6/28/2009 2:24:55 PM | | Not all of us carry guns in America. Like the rest of the world, there are always those bad apples in every town, village, country. Should it matter if your Catholic or Protestant, Irish or American, aren't we all the same inside? Maybe not. | |

Should it matter if your Catholic or Protestant, Irish or American, aren't we all the same inside? Truest thing ever said.
Unfortunately, many don't believe it, as should be obvious from this thread.

| Catholic vs. Protestant Posted: 7/31/2009 7:33:33 AM | I've just come back from Northern Ireland and will be visiting again in three weeks time.
It didn't change my views on the constitutional question (pro-Union) but it moderated my views somewhat. No matter what nationalists might wish, unionists aren't just going to go away. It's now up to unionists to show that Catholics are welcome in Northern Ireland. Making them feel welcome at their parades and disbanding the paramilitaries would be a start. Unfortunately there isn't the political will for that over there. The problems that NI has are not that dissimilar to other parts of the UK, they just come in different packaging.

| Catholic vs. Protestant Posted: 7/31/2009 12:48:41 PM | | This issue should not exist anymore. The whole divide of this country has done nothing but hold us all back and painted the image of blood thirsty savages in Ireland and/or Northern Ireland. I'm an atheist myself and have many Catholic and Protestant friends as well as Spiritualists, Wiccans etc. and i would never hold their religious preference or beliefs against them. We should all be free to go where ever we like in this country without the fear of being attacked just because of what kind of church you attend or which area you are from. I have been to so many countries where they hear my accent and the first thing they ask me is 'how bad it is in Ireland'. Even had this in parts of England and Wales too. I don't think we should forget our past, but we all have to move on from this bigotry, there is absolutely no need for it anymore. | |

In Ireland's history, the people of the north (Ulster, and yes, not all of Ulster is in N. Ireland) have always been "at odds" with people of the south (i.e. the rest of Ireland in the other three provinces). One of the oldest stories, "The Cattle Raid of Cooley" involves (how can it be simplified?! ),... involves a major cattle raid instigated by Queen Maebh with the "friendly thighs" against the King of Ulster. She wanted his bull (just the bull -- no by products). Anyway, there are many stories within the "Cattle Raid of Cooley", and it shows that the Ulster Irish and the other Irish have since before written history been "at odds" with each other. If it's not for one reason, it'll be for another reason.
The "battle" is more like native vs not-so-native Irish. Native Irish are popularly considered to be Roman Catholic, whereas the new interlopers (the Vikings, Anglo-Normans, Scottish and English) are non-native and/or "Protestant". The boundaries aren't as clear as people would like them to be.
I'm sorry "Ulster Born" but I have to call you on this post; it is a complete misrepresentation of the historical background to the Troubles.

| Catholic vs. Protestant Posted: 8/5/2009 4:16:29 AM | I can't decide if I'm flattered or scared that you are so dying to meet me but unfortunately my time is precious and cannot be wasted on one who first appeared with a bulbous nose, then a bulbous 'ahem' lunchbox and now just plain bulbous. As I said to one of your 'friends' recently, had I been a man, I wouldn't ride you into battle. That might indicate to you that our coffee date is not to be.
Ask Cartoonloon, he lives near me and you like him, you could get the essense of one who lives on the northside of Dublin without the agro of wondering who the burly lady is with the rangers shirt on. I could ask Liam Cunningham to join you perhaps, he lives near and I know his wife Colette.

| Catholic vs. Protestant Posted: 12/30/2009 5:24:24 PM | | Catholics and Protestants are both Christian. There is no hatred in Christianity. Jesus loathed hypocrasy. For true Christians, that should put an end to the problem. Holy war is an oxymoron. | |

Catholics and Protestants are both Christian. There is no hatred in Christianity. Jesus loathed hypocrasy. For true Christians, that should put an end to the problem. Holy war is an oxymoron.
Holy wars are a fact of history. Some of the most savage were launched by Popes. They were called the Crusades. Popes also launched wars on anyone who was even suspected of not agreeing with them. They were called the Inquisitions.
After invading Iraq George Bush claimed God told him to. Tony Blair when asked about all the suffering and death that resulted answered "god will be my judge".
Christianity has bred more hatred than anything else in the western world in the last 1700 years.
No one can say for sure what some itinerant preacher who allegedly lived in the Iron Age did or did not say. For all the show stopping miracles the wonder man/god is supposed to have performed no one at the time bothered to write about any of them. There could not possibly have been anyone who had a name beginning with the letter J before the middle ages.
You need help. Go to a shrink.

| Catholic vs. Protestant Posted: 1/4/2010 4:16:47 PM | I am an athiest. I was brought up in a poor working class family who were not from the Roman Catholic side of the fence. I was brought up on a housing estate where Catholic Protestant and athiests lived side by side. The housing estate was constantly visited by evangelical protestants who handed out sweeties to children. I was personally sexually assaulted by a c25 year old evangelical protestant so take that in mind when I state my opinion. It was not until I was about 11yrs old that I discovered why certain of my childhood freinds went to a different school. In Northern Ireland unlike the rest of the world there are state sponsored Roman Catholic Schools and state sponsored non roman catholic schools. ie they are not secular state schools but effectively protestant schools.
There is no question that the act of segregating children as early as 5 yrs old into Roman Catholic primary schools and state (protestant) schools lies completely in the hands of the Roman Catholic Church.
That devision leads eventually into a major division of Irish children into Irish and Catholic and Irish British and Protestant factions.
The twisted Northern Ireland state never set out to do this. It was clearly the Roman Catholic Church however well meaning that caused this major division.
Despite being a non christian and now a wholehearted athiest and despite being brought up by non religious parents I am always aware that there are two types of people in Belfast. I constantly think that Orla or Seamus or Naimh is a really nice peson for a Catholic. I should never think this but the sordid sectarian system has drummed that into all of us .
Clearly the cure for this sectarianism is for non divided secular schools like they have in France Germany Italy and Spain.

| Catholic vs. Protestant Posted: 1/5/2010 11:25:09 AM | | actually in the original hebrew it was "Thou shalt not murder." I was educated by Jesuits | |
|
| Catholic vs. Protestant Posted: 1/7/2010 9:21:54 PM | no,actualy it says thy shalt not kill which is bull shit.and you have every right to kill someone who is trying to murder you.as far as this topic,i dont take advice from a man who wears a dress and rapes kids.and if i want to talk to GOD,I dont need a man wearing a dress telling me that god only talks to a idiot wearing a dress and a dunce hat.GOD has talk to me plenty of times when he feels the need.GOD talks to us all,the only problem is most of us dont listen to him.there is a big difference between murder and killing | |

| Catholic vs. Protestant Posted: 1/21/2010 3:12:44 PM | < Proud southern Scotch/irish/english american if such a thing exists. Well anyway what i was going to say is that i do not feel it is the denomination that matters . The thing that really matters is faith in god and accepting jesus as your savior. Let me point out that i have not always thought this way and i used to be a non-believer but the more i thought about it the more i realized anyone who just thinks all of this came from nothing is only fooling themselves.
While i am non-catholic i admire them for the stances they take on abortion issues and while i do not follow catholicism i see them as allies as both us protestants and them belief in god. Catholics and protestants need to help each other instead of fighting amongst themselves.

So if all this came from some entity maybe you can answer some questions:
How big was/is the thing in terms of miles or volume? How complex was/is it? Does/did it have a willy? If it did why did it have one? Was it mechanical, artificial or biological? Is it still alive now and how old is it? Where does it live and what does it eat? Who or what invented it?
Why could a thing that invented billions of planets, cells, microbes, chemical reactions, millions of varying species not learn how to master the art of handwriting?
While i am non-catholic i admire them for the stances they take on abortion issues and while i do not follow catholicism i see them as allies as both us protestants and them belief in god. Catholics and protestants need to help each other instead of fighting amongst themselves.
Protestants are just a Catholic splinter group that parted company out of disgust with Rome and it's never ending hypocrisy. The Roman Catholic policy on abortion is based on a hatred of women and ancient ignorance. It's irrational.
|
| Catholic vs. Protestant Posted: 1/22/2010 12:58:16 PM | So where did it come from a leprechaun's a**?? Chief i did not come in here to argue religion with you. I am protestant not catholic and i was just pointing out a good thing about the catholic church and i do not agree with some priests fondling boys wankers. I know some decent catholics here and i don't want to group all catholics in the same group much as i would not put all protestants on the same level.
" The Roman Catholic policy on abortion is based on hatred of women and ancient ignorance" So i guess it is the woman who gets her brains scrapped out eh? In my book abortion is murder plain and simple after all that fetus is life and if it is'nt tell me what it is. Irrational you sound like the typical ignorant american liberal we have here.
