2001 Manics is decent. It's very cheesy but it has Robert Englund in it and I'll give any movie a chance that he is in. Cemetery Man is a cool movie. Some cool newer movies that I have liked are Behind The Mask The Rise Of Leslie Vernon , Hatchet and The Tripper.

Have you seen Jack Brooks Monsters Slayer? If anything check it out for Englund, you could tell he had fun hamming it up.

Leslie Vernon, and Hatchet were both good. I enjoyed The Tripper a lot more than I thought I would, I'll admit I was a little skeptical when I saw it was made by David Arquette.

My Name is Bruce is a fun, silly horror-comedy. Bruce was great at playing himself as a total jerk.

Though not a horror film, Brutal Massacre is a funny 'mockumentary' about making a horror film. Some slow bits, but Gunnar Hansen was hilarious as the town drunk.

I thought Diary of the Dead was good, and I'm looking forward to Romero's newest zombie flick.

Blood Car was really good, a guy invents a car that runs on human blood.

Sleepover Nightmare was a fun cheesy slasher, it took me back to the straight to video slashers of the late 80's

I've also liked Rest Stop, The Last Winter, Mulberry Street, Carver, Shrooms, Hack!, Timber Falls, Trespassers.

Yeah I have seen Jack Brooks. It was ok I may have to see it again to get the comedy of it though because it really didn't do anything for me the first time. But Englund was great in it. He does his horror comedy well I think. And he's a very funny person in person also.

Oh I left out The Signal and Severance I thought those two were good as well. The Tripper was a fun movie as was the other three. It just had that atmosphere that most new horror lacks because it tries too hard to be serious.

I liked Diary Of The Dead and can't wait to see Island Of The Dead. It should be interesting. I wish they would make movies based off the Brian Keene dead series.

Mulberry Street was decent. But I liked Borderland better in that series of the Horrorfest releases.

Severance was excellent, as was Borderland...the movie that disappointed me the most out of that year's Horrorfest was Rolfe Kanefsky's Nightmare Man, I'm a big fan of Rolfe's There's Nothing Out There, and The Hazing, but Nightmare Man was a big letdown.

The Tripper was a fun movie as was the other three. It just had that atmosphere that most new horror lacks because it tries too hard to be serious.

Plus you can't go wrong with Paul Rubens covered in poo

I still haven't seen The Signal yet, but it's sitting in my Netflix queue.

Is Island of the Dead the same as '...Of The Dead' ? That's how IMDB has it listed, I want to see it too. It's good to see Romero has some 'of the Dead' films left in him. John Russo on the other hand, yikes he has made some stinkers.

Another recent(4 years old) horror film I really liked was Dead Birds.

I'm also waiting to see the Norwegian horror film- Død snø (Dead Snow)

There's a lot of books out there that would make excellent horror films, too bad nobody's taking advantage of them- most of Richard Laymon's books would make for entertaining movies.

I actually bought Brutal Masscare.. not my smartest purchase ever.. but it was on the View Askew Boards because umm.. Brian O'Halloran from Clerks was in it.. he was.. like the.. AD or something.. but.. I mean. I was just curious to see David Naughton, who I hadn't seen since... American Werewolf?

I've been curious about the Jack Brooke.. ALMOST rented it today.. Didn't care for Hatchet, what I saw of it.. and I saw.. last year some time.. All the Boys Love Mandy Lane... they were making a HUGE deal of the flick.. which wasn't bad.. but its just a bad case of the whole.. just over hyping a flick? ya know..

I actually did like Behind the Mask.. thought it was pretty clever.. and had a good twist at the end.. actually enjoyed it quite a bit, ditto on Diary of the Dead... and definitely curious to see.. where or what they're planning with the next one..

I just read the greatest news

http://www.dreadcentral.com/news/31130/night-creeps-dvd-october

I can't wait for this to happen. Now only if they would stop making these horrible remakes. Already heard about the Nightmare On Elm Street plot line and it's horrible. Freddy killing kids at a rock band party ugh

That's excellent news.

Now if the 'Massacre at Central High' DVD would finally get an official release date....

Too bad Wes wasn't involved with the Elm Street remake like he was with 'Last House...' and 'Hills...'.

I didn't like The Hills Have Eyes remake. I thought the characters weren't real enough. I mean come on a whole mutant family didn't make me believe it. Wes does have something coming out soon it has a number for a name and a boy and dreams I think. I don't remember too much about it. I was at his panel back in July so all the info is pretty much gone.

I didn't hate it, but it still came nowhere close as the original which I consider my favorite Craven film. But if he was involved with the Elm Street remake, maybe we'd get something better than Freddy killing kids at a rock concert...but then again Craven is responsible for both versions of Hills Have Eyes 2.

25/8 or something like that?

It's not even a rock concert it's a rock band party where the kids are playing a video game. And Nancy is suppose to be some goth chick. The whole premises makes me want to puke.

I actually haven't a clue it was so long ago for me lol

Hatchet was a good cheesy horror homage to the cheesy 80's horror movies. The one thing that lacked in Diary Of The Dead was that Romero feel that you get with Night, Dawn and Day. It could be just the way it was filmed.

I read yesterday that the new Freddy may be played by Jackie Earle Haley (he played Rorschach in The Watchmen and he's the red head boy from Bad News Bears movies lol) Hopefully the movie will be watchable if he's Freddy. Although Englund will always be Freddy to me.

No means No when it comes to what Hollywood should say to themselves when they think of remaking more flicks.

I think Jackie Earle Haley is a good fit! I don't know if you heard but Billy Bob Thornton was rumored to have been approached to play Freddy! lol I think Jackie was a better pick! He's got a similar build to Freddy and if you saw the movie "Little Children" he's a great actor and can definitely do creepy!

If Billy Bob Thornton got the part I couldn't be paid to watch the movie. I think he would have made a horrible Freddy.

I agree with the no means no but Hollywood is making tons of money off these remakes even if they are a pile of poo.

awww.. c'mon.. Billy Bob would have made a WONDERFUL Freddy..

"see children.. I kill't 'em.. with a kaiser blade.. some people call it a sling blade.."

that's classic!!!

I have to admit.. haven't seen Watchmen, and I don't think that would be a good performance to bas on what we'd see with Freddy.. but you have to admit.. we're going to see some UPDATING to the characters.. and a rock band guitar hero party.. not unlikely..

I saw a video review of the draft of the new scrips.. and yeah.. on paper sounds pretty lame. the new Depp like character is a pod-caster.. oooh.. how cutting edge and exxxxxtremeeeeee! but one piece of casting that someone mentioned.. and I actually LIKED was Amanda Crewes in the "Nancy" role.. well whatever the name of the lead girl is.. I hadn't seen her before, aside from the film "Sex Drive".. but she doesn't come across as the skanky teen ho girls that we see in most of the flicks. which is the one thing that really defines her character type.. and personally don't know if its true, but that is who I am pulling for.

I don't know.. PERSONALLY I wanted to see the non supernatural PREQUEL film that was tossed around a few years back, with Englund to be directed by John Naughton (Henry: Portrait, Wild Things). It just sounded like a really creepy.. and fitting entry that would.. show some of the backstory, that has been talked abiut.. could have been HORRIBLE.. but I'd have more faith in that than from the guy who wrote the 90's remake of "The Saint".

If you haven't seen Watchmen then how can you say you can't base his performance on that?

She's not going to be playing Nancy it was a rumor. Well you can't get a prequel story since they basically covered the past in Freddy's Dead.

I am more excited about Ghostbusters 3 then this ridiculous remake lol

I'd see it for Haley, he was in some of the films I watched as a kid- besides Kelly Leak in the Bad News Bears movies, he was Moocher in Breaking Away(even reprised his role in the short lived series), Billy in Damnation Alley, and he was in the early 80's Tom Cruise teen sex comedy 'Losin' It'
And I thought he was excellent in the more recent 'Little Children'.

well.. as much as I DO know about Watchmen.. he is under a mask the whole movie.. which I guess in alot of ways.. would be the same for Nightmare..

hmm.. Kelly.. wasn't that the bad ass pitcher from Bad News Bears? wow.. He's been around for quite a while then... I still don't know about him.

and yeah.. I KNOW the Amanda Crwes was a RUMOR.. I just said it was a GOOD one.. I think it origniated with Bloody Disgusting who put forth the idea.. and.. I happen to agree with it..

fingers crosseed its GOOD.. but personally.. even with the whole backstore in Freddy's Dead.. there could have been more.. from the screipt review on Latina Review.. it seems that while Freddy WAS a child killer.. the question of whather or not he was actually a child molsester seems to be at part of the remake.. this could have been an interesting backstore.. and c'mon.. in the hands of John Naughton.. this could have been some great material.

Having just seen Watchmen, i think Jackie Earle Haley has great potential as Freddy - he definitely can do creepiness very well (also in Little Children which I thought he was fantastic in.

Don't forget Trancers, the Phantasm movies, Evil Dead, and all the other great corny 80's horror. Trancers, god those movies cracked me up.

I agree about Jackie Earle Haley. He was great in Watchman. Very creepy.

I can't see Last House On The Left because I don't stomach rape scenes in movies well anymore. I just don't need to see really graphic ones and I've heard this one is pretty bad.

I tend to prefer horror movies that more "haunting" then gory. (like The Ring for example, yes I'm a big p*ssy I know) I just can't stomach the "torture" scenes in current popular horror. So I suppose I won't be renting old classics like I Spit On Your Grave any time soon either. I've been more into the Japanese horror, since the gore factor seems to be less overall.

I did like The Devils Rejects. Do I get points for that one at least? And I still like some of the original slasher films like Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Halloween, etc.

But one of my all time favorite classic horror movies, which gave me nightmares as a kid, is The Shining. Still love that movie. I dig psychological terror more then just slasher flicks.

Interesting thread though.

Good to see another fan of the Trancers films, though I disliked Trancers 6 which had Jack Deth wake up in his daughter's body....lame, no Tim Thomerson = no Jack Deth. I also like Thomerson in other Empire/Full Moon flicks like Doll Man and Zone Troopers.
Phantasm films are great- though I do prefer parts 1 and 2 over 3 and 4, a couple of years ago I bought the Phantasm films DVD set which came with a silver sphere.

Asian horror is excellent. Though the 'ghost child' movies did get a little old after awhile, but I did enjoy the Ringu Trilogy, and A Chinese Ghost Story is really good. I liked Suicide Club, Audition, and films like Battle Royale and Versus. 2LDK is a great Japanese movie about 2 actresses who when finding out they are up for the same film role have a battle to the death.
And House(Hausu) is a very entertaining 70's Japanese horror comedy.
I also enjoy some of the 60's/70's Japanese exploitation flicks(Pinky Violence) like Terrifying Girls' High School: Lynch Law Classroom(Kyôfu joshikôkô: bôkô rinchi kyôshitsu )
My current favorite Asian horror film is Machine Girl(Kataude mashin gâru ) , what's not to like about about a Japanese schoolgirl with a machine gun arm.

I'm terrible at remembering the names of a lot of the asian horror/fantasy movies I've seen but have you seen The Host yet? One of the best monster movies I've seen in years. The special effects were pretty darn decent for a lower budget movie and the acting was pretty good too. The monster was even scary.

As far as Machine Girl, I've heard of it, but now I'm wondering, did Tarantino rip off the machine gun/limb idea from that movie for his recent Grindhouse movie, Planet Terror, with Rose McGowan and her machine gun leg? (I actually liked the movie, but the theme did seem familiar)

As far as scary movies, does anyone remember the title of a movie that came out years ago that had a homicidal robot? The movie itself, was kind of slow, but due to the robot violently slicing/drilling up parts of various humans, I think it was one of the first movies to get an NC-17 rating? Wasn't it called Hardcore, or Hardwire or something? I can't for the life of me, remember the name of it.

I dig scary sci-fi movies too. (of course, the older ones are usually more funny then scary) Anyone remember Saturn 3 with Farrah Fawcett? The robot in that movie, scared the crap out of me the first time I saw it as a kid. (I guess I'm partial to movies with murdering robots)
