I'm terrible at remembering the names of a lot of the asian horror/fantasy movies I've seen but have you seen The Host yet? One of the best monster movies I've seen in years. The special effects were pretty darn decent for a lower budget movie and the acting was pretty good too. The monster was even scary.
The Host was great fun.
As far as Machine Girl, I've heard of it, but now I'm wondering, did Tarantino rip off the machine gun/limb idea from that movie for his recent Grindhouse movie, Planet Terror, with Rose McGowan and her machine gun leg? (I actually liked the movie, but the theme did seem familiar)
Planet Terror was Robert Rodriguez's, and it came out before Machine Girl...not that Tarantino doesn't 'borrow' heavily from Asian cinema
As far as scary movies, does anyone remember the title of a movie that came out years ago that had a homicidal robot? The movie itself, was kind of slow, but due to the robot violently slicing/drilling up parts of various humans, I think it was one of the first movies to get an NC-17 rating? Wasn't it called Hardcore, or Hardwire or something? I can't for the life of me, remember the name of it.
Hardware. The same director also did a decent little horror film called Dust Devil.
I dig scary sci-fi movies too. (of course, the older ones are usually more funny then scary) Anyone remember Saturn 3 with Farrah Fawcett? The robot in that movie, scared the crap out of me the first time I saw it as a kid. (I guess I'm partial to movies with murdering robots)
I remember seeing Saturn 3 on the big screen when it came out.
Of course the greatest(in my opinion)killer robot movie is 'Westworld', Yul Brynner freaked me out as a kid. Still a great movie.
'Deadly Friend' and 'Chopping Mall' are good cheesy killer robot fun.

Deadly Friend.. bought it last Halloween.. that and Dr. Giggles.. say what you will.. they are bad cheesy flicks.. but FUN... same with Planet Terror.. it was the John Carpenter flick Carpenter WOULD have made post The Thing.. had Carpenter gotten around to it.. but.. Rodriguez did pretty good too.

| Last House on the Left - Movie Posted: 4/23/2009 3:55:31 PM | | I never did get to see Trancers 6.. heck.. it wasn't even Full Moon anymore was it? I HEARD that Thomerson did a cameo.. but I kinda had the same feeling.. no Jack Deth.. no Trancers.. no Tim Thomerson.. no Jack Deth.. although I was kinda let down with the last 2.. it felt like they were trying to go more of the Army of Darkness route with the series.. which I LOVE that flick.. but after 2 and 3.. was kinda hoping they would have fallen more in line with the original.. | |

Some of my favorite horror films are the cheesy ones.
And speaking of cheese, I've been watching some great Mexican cheese from the 80's/early 90's-
'Cementerio del terror '(1985, aka Cemetery of Terror) Group of teens messing around with a magic book raise the dead- Evil Dead meets Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things. Loads of fun.
Ladrones de tumbas (1990, aka Grave Robbers) Dead monk comes back to life and goes on gory rampage.
Dimensiones ocultas (1988, aka Don't Panic) Evil spirit released from Ouija board.
Vacaciones de terror (1989, aka Vacations of Terror) Little girl on vacation with her family finds a doll that turns out to be possessed by a witch.
Trampa infernal (1990, aka Hell's Trap) Group of friends in the woods are hunted by a crazed Vietnam vet.

| Last House on the Left - Movie Posted: 4/24/2009 4:05:53 PM | | oh dude.. sorry didn't read your whole post.. the flick you're thinking of was called "Hardware" this guy in a post apocalyptic future finds this robot out in the deasert.. and it boots back up.. and starts killing people off.. got rated NC17 for like a sex scene.. and.. the dude next door who made like lewd calls to the chick.. beyond that.. the flick really wasn't all that memorable in the pantheon of killer robot flicks.. I want to say. 92? maybe 93? | |

Ah, you're right. My bad. It was Rodrioguez's. I was thinking Machine Girl was an older movie for some reason. (I really need to look up stuff online before I post for accuracy!)
Hardware....that was it. I'll have to check that one out again, just for the heck of it. Along with Saturn 3. lol.
As far as zombie movies, the 21 Days Later movies were pretty good. I don't really care for zombie movies much because they just come across as corny to me, but the 21 Days/Weeks ones were pretty decent to me.
I've also enjoyed some of the horror movies based on video games like the (first) Resident Evil, and Silent Hill. But sometimes I like a bit of a "fantasy" element along with my horror.
What about werewolves and vampire horror movies? I have a thing for werewolves. I don't know why. lol. But An American Werewolf in Paris and the The Howling, are still good in my book. (not the sequels or remakes, those tend to be awful) The werewolves in The Howling truly scared the crap out of me. As far as vampire movies, I have yet to see one that's truly "scary". They are either campy, or "dark romances", etc. But I don't think I've seen a truly terrifying vampire movie, although I did recently see Let The Right One In about a Swedish boy who befriends a young girl vampire. That one was interesting.
As far as monster movies go, for horror....I know some folks hated the shaky camera work on Cloverfield but if you can get past that, that's another monster movie I really dug recently. One of the creepiest movie monsters I've seen in years. And The Mist? The giant insect things in that movie, were pretty spooky.
Lets see, what else...still love The Thing with Kurt Russell. I just watched it again recently and even years later, the special effects hold up pretty well. I notice I tend to enjoy horror movies that have more of a "creep" factor...then a gore factor.
Jeeze, I almost forgot, my all time favorite sci-fi horror movies of all time... Alien and Aliens. But I'm a huge H.R.Giger fan and Sigourney Weaver just rocks in those movies. Scariest movie monster...ever. (in my book) As far as Alien 3, and Alien Resurrection and the Alien Vs Predator movies...not too happy with those, but I watched them anyway since I'm an Alien nut.
Ok, sorry, I'm rambling now. I'm just really enjoying this thread! It's a good topic.

For werewolf movies- the best is still 'An American Werewolf in London'(Still the best transformation scene), also 'The Howling', 'Silver Bullet', I enjoyed the 'Ginger Snaps Trilogy'.
For vampires, I haven't really seen a truly scary one either, but I do have some favorites. 'Nosferatu' (the original and the 70's remake) George Romero's 'Martin' 'Fright Night' ('85) 'Vamp' ('86) 'The Last Man on Earth' ('64) 'Vampyr' ('32) 'Bram Stoker's Dracula' ('92) 'Lemora: A Child's Tale of the Supernatural' ('73) 'Salems Lot' ('79) 'Near Dark' ('87) 'The Reflecting Skin' ('90) 'The Hunger' ('83)
Monster movies, I also like 'Alien' and 'Aliens', enjoyed 'Pumpkinhead', 'Creature from the Black Lagoon', 'Humanoids From The Deep', 'The Boogens', 'The Strangeness' ('85), 'The Dark' ('94), Tremors , The Thing, and I did enjoy 'Cloverfield'(I've never been bothered by shaky-cam, I enjoyed Blair Witch, and Diary of the Dead, the only shaky cam I dislike is when used in action movies- it's hard to see what's happening, and it seems like they are trying to hide bad fight choreography) 'The Unnamable'('88) though an ultra-cheesy movie, has a really great monster. I also revisited 'Blood Beach' recently, it scared me back in the early 80's, but watching it again, not so much. The concept is still great(Burt Young is hilarious), and got to love the tagline- "Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water - you can't get to it."
One of my favorite 'guilty pleasure's' horror films is The Pit ('81), which is about a very disturbed 12 year old boy who talks to his Teddy bear(and the bear talks back), he befriends a group of creatures living in a pit out in the woods, and when he learns what they like to eat- the people he doesn't like begin to disappear
