The Synchronous Fireflies of Elkmont
Each June in the Elkmont area of the Great Smoky Mountains, a natural phenomenon occurs that continues to baffle scientists.
During a two week window in late spring, thousands of lightning bugs flash in complete unison.
The synchronous firefly show, which researchers have identified as a rare form of “simultaneous bioluminescence”, is a popular and growing attraction for the Smoky Mountains. Each evening, several hundred park visitors begin arriving in Elmont with blankets, chairs and flashlights to witness the natural phenomenon that occurs after the park becomes pitch black.

Although the existence of synchronous fireflies at Elkmont was known to only a few prior to the early 1990s, synchronous fireflies have been known to visitors of Southeast Asia for centuries. In fact, Sir Francis Drake recorded the phenomenon during his exploration of the East Indies in 1577.
While Elkmont has become a popular and crowded spot to see the lightning bugs, similar glow-in-the-dark shows have also been reported in Cades Cove, Joyce Kilmer-Slickrock Wilderness Area, Hot Springs, Greenbrier and the Sugarlands in recent years.
Synchronous fireflies (Photinus carolinus) are one of 14 species of fireflies that live within the park boundaries. They’re the only species in America whose individuals can synchronize their flashing light patterns.
Fireflies take from one to two years to mature from larvae, but will live as adults for only about 21 days. Their light patterns are part of the adulthood mating display. Each species of firefly has a characteristic flash pattern that helps its male and female individuals recognize each other. The males fly and flash and the usually stationary females respond with a flash.
No one is quite sure why the fireflies flash synchronously. Competition between males may be one reason: they all want to be the first to flash. Or perhaps if the males all flash together they have a better chance of being noticed, and the females can make better comparisons. The fireflies do not always flash in unison. They may flash in waves across hillsides, and at other times will flash randomly. Synchrony occurs in short bursts that end with abrupt periods of darkness.
Peak flashing for synchronous fireflies in the park normally occurs within a two-week period in mid-June.
As in recent years, in order to control the crowds, the park will close the road to Elkmont (except to registered campers staying at Elkmont), and a trolley service from the Sugarlands Visitor Center will be provided for those wishing to see the fireflies in action.
Trolleys will run between the Sugarlands Visitor Center and Elkmont on June 7-14 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. (but will end earlier in the evening if the parking lot fills up). The last trolley back to the Visitor Center will leave Elkmont at 11:00 p.m.

Will be at Sugarland Vistor Center around 5:30 P.M. to take trolley at 6 P.M.!
Trolley service from the Sugarlands Visitor Center will be provided for those wishing to see the fireflies in action.
Trolleys will run between the Sugarlands Visitor Center and Elkmont on June 7-14 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. (but will end earlier in the evening if the parking lot fills up). The last trolley back to the Visitor Center will leave Elkmont at 11:00 p.m.

This is a costume party...so it is hopeful you will use your imagination and come dressed to have fun! a costume is not a requirement to attend the party...just a special element to add some extra fun for us adults. there will be a prize given for the best costume! Per request of the owner, full masks will not be permitted (ex. freddie kruger, michael myers). this same rule applies, when she has her own halloween party for the club. Don't want to give the thieves extra ability to rob the place...so no full masks, please. there are plenty of ideas on the internet that won't require a full mask...vampire, pirate, doctor, biker.

IT'S ON THE SC.SINGLE EVENT IF U LIKE SUNDAY RIDES.
Dragon Run for Cars & Bikes Sunday 11 October - the most fun you can have with your clothes on!!!
Fun Car / Bike run to the Dragon through the North Carolina mountains and the fall leaves.
Guys bring your cars, girls bring the “zams”
We meet at chiefs parking lot in the morning at 7am - yes 7 am !!!!
Guys drive the cars, and the girls choose a ride.
We pull out of the parking area at 7:15 - if you are late, go home and back to bed.
We will travel in convoy and stop every hour. Then the girls will get out and find another ride.
Girls may not ride with the same driver again.
We will travel to the small town of Deals Gap, where the dragon starts.
Here we will be able to base ourselves for a few hours while those that want to “run the dragon”
The dragon is 11 miles and 318 turns, or something like that, the most fun you can have with your clothes on.
From there we will return to chiefs, changing passengers every hour, so the ladies can get to their cars and those of us that would like to can have a drink or 3 at chiefs.
expect to be back around 7 or 8pm - hopefully in love
No drinking during the day while we are driving.
Guys :- you supply the car / bike (must have helmet for your passenger) and pay for all the gas
Any car is fine guys, big / small / fast / slow, and" if you don’t want to run the dragon you don’t have to," there will be a group of people at the “base camp”
Girls :- you supply the zams (sandwiches ), the way to a mans heart is through his taste buds
No store bought zams - make it yourself and bring enough
So this will be like speed dating without the speed
You will get to spend about an hour with about 10 different people
Plenty of time to find the great things about the other person - you know we all have our good points
So come make some new friends
BRING YOUR CAMERAS - THIS AREA IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PART OF THE WORLD DURING FALL

| Birthday Party --- Come one, come all.......just get together and have a blast!!
Posted: 10/25/2009 8:13:08 PM | I will be turning 37 on November the 4th and have talked to some of my friends on here about a birthday party at Cotton Eye Joe's on the 6th. I have been encouraged by many of you to share with the others, so that is what I am doing.................I am sharing the information.
I will be getting to Knoxville Friday evening around 6 and probably get to Joe's around 7 pm. No committments on this, if ya'll can come out, then head that way. Just thought that this would be a great way to get a few of us together and celebrate my birthday. I haven't had a birthday bash in such a long time and I think I am past due!
There is a Motel 6 right down the road to stay at if you drink too much and don't want to take the chance on driving home..........it is where I always stay and I have never had a problem there. If ya'll need anymore information or want to talk in private, send me an email. I hope to see a lot of my friends there!!!!!!!
