49ers were gold prospectors who joined the California gold rush in 1849 (and for a few years thereafter). I suppose the team name could have been different if the gold rush happened 20 years later. There's also the Philadelphia 76ers and a junior hockey team, the Ottawa 67s.
I always thought St. Louis Blues was a good team name. Its a type of music with a rich history and it comes with its own logo and colour. | |

MLS soccer had the Kansas City Wiz [after the broadway show based on Wizard of Oz]. They changed it to the Wizards after a year, I think. | |

If that is the case then they should be called the Zoo Bengals.
No the Bucs uniforms were with that puke orange as we used to call it back in the day. | |

Posted: 3/27/2009 6:24:38 AM | The whole NBA thing -and their penchant for never changing the names of teams that relocate- is something that my son actually brought up last night; we're both surprised that the Supersonics aren't playing in Oklahoma City...
...I remember when Vancouver was awarded a franchise; the original team name was to be the Mounties, but the RCMP objected, so Grizzlies was chosen...good thing too, because how much sense would the "Memphis Mounties" make? Possibly even less than the Utah Jazz. It seems like the only time this worked out favorably was when the Fort Wayne Pistons relocated to Detroit. | |
