IM Has Been Discontinued By 3rd party Vendor
Posted: 4/19/2009 7:43:40 AM
What a shame!!!... I like the ability to 'meet' people and chat before giving out my personal information.

There have been other posts with suggestions of alternative free IM software, PLEASE can we have one of them, we have always had the option to disable IM for those who don't want to use it but there are plenty of us who do.

I can't see me staying with POF without IM and I'm sure there will be lots of others who will leave to which will be a shame as it's been a great site.

Thank you. It is a pleasure to see No More IM. I always had to turn it off. It was to the point of being annoying . Your Email/Message functuion is truly more than adequate. It had the funtions to disallow unwanted contacts. The IM did not.

Again Thank you.

I Love IMs!
Posted: 4/19/2009 8:14:01 AM
Please find a way to bring IMs back. They're so useful in making your first introduction, and you can really get a flavor early about someone's personality. Just talking a few minutes "in person" can help you decide if you have anything in common and the chemistry to pursue it.

If people don't like IMs, they certainly have the ability to turn them off for themselves on the Mail Settings page. Why not give those who really like them the chance to keep them. I understand that the third-party vendor has discontinued them; however, there must be another source for this great feature.

Thanks! It's a great site.

Umm, message 1 and 12 are CLEAR explanations. You just didn't bother to read them.

Bring back IM!!!! BUT!

Get a better service...that system y'all had before sucked, and I mean royally. Every time the other party wrote and hit enter, one has to pause, reclick on what they were typing and start over.

That and the fact that there was a limit on how much one can type at once? I mean, how 90's is that?!

Drop the current, get something new.

I have to say I agree , it's a really easy way to chat to the friends I've made on here...I don't have to answer it for those I don't want to talk to. And email takes so long!!
MAYBE we should all look at other sites.since they do have IM

effective ?..ummm dude,,your site was good,,now its boring and almost useless..you need some way to be able to talk to people..the IM was a source..now you have to wait a period of time to receive emails,,because your system delivers emails slow..and half the time by the time you get the email that person is logged offline..you had a good thing here,,now it seems to be slipping,,and almost useless..you gave the people an option by using it or disabling it..its called a choice,,without the IM your users are gonna make a choice,,and find a new source to go to also..my suggestion is to not only bring IM back,,but to add user plane chatrooms,,you would draw more people here..and actually keep them..

Removal of the IM system
Posted: 4/19/2009 11:16:45 AM
Well Well...I wonder if the Admin (Markus) had a clue that removing some AD's with his new "Serious Member" idea would cause a trickle down effect to the "IM" usage eula. I think not.

"Paid Gifts", (He claimed he could make 500,000 per year. FAILED and REMOVED)

"Serious Member", (Give them FREE to Women Members, with the thought Men would buy them up. Failing Badly. Criticized widely. (Yet to be removed.)

"IM system". Its removal is a simple case of the IM usage Eula. Plain and simple. The Admin (Markus) will not be told what he can or cannot do. (Thats his right) Now he spins that the effect of removing it is a positive one.

Well whether you liked it (The IM service) or not does not matter. What matters is that the MEN on POF mostly liked it. Its clear to me that the ADMIN (Markus) bends over backwards (No pun intended lol) for the lady members on pof. But without men for the women, they will not support the site and vice a versa.

Men are different then women in that when they decide they have been abused or treated unfairly they will say the H E L L with this BS.

Only time will show if this IM debacle turns into strike 3 for the site, and a boom for other FREE DATING SITES offering IM etc. Site trackers are showing Up ticks on the other sites.

Removal of the IM system
Posted: 4/19/2009 1:42:42 PM
This site is no where as good without the IM system. As plenty of people have said already, the IMs are a great way to talk to people right away. If I send an e-mail, it takes way too long for the person to get it and sometimes they are no longer online.

I don't know anything about you personally Markus (Admin), but I have a feeling you are being stubborn about this. I am also a very stubborn person, so I know where you are coming from. But the IM system here is the backbone of the site. I told a few friends about this site and they decided to stay because of the IM system. I already know one of those friends will not be coming back.

Please, please, please, please bring it back.

I think the IM is a great idea, thats why I joined so I could talk to people.
But whats the point if you can't talk messenger style, sending emails back and forth is a pain.I think I will delete my profile and join a site where you can talk in real time, its worth paying for that feature,Way to go POF.

For those of you just tuning in, this is the recap...(so you don't have to search through 13 pages of replies)

1. You are probably here because you are looking for a technical reason why you don't see the IM links under user thumbnails anymore...

2. The site owner/admins disabled the IM feature a few days ago without even having the common courtesy to notify anyone.

3. The site owner/admins claim this was because:
a. AOL owns the chat client and is discontinuing it (lie)
b. The chat client was too expensive (also apparently a lie)
c. Site usage statistics are better without it (not necessarily true and perhaps out of context)

4. He has insulted us by claiming that "idiocy" among POF users is less common without it. (whatever that means)

5. Many users (mostly women) have replied that they are in favor of the change, as they were being harassed by unsolicited IM's (when they had the simple ability to disable them)

6. The site owner/admins have not commented since the first page of this post.

7. Many users are predicting that one or both of the following are about to happen:
a. The ol' "Pump and Dump"...boost the site usage statistics then sell it.
b. This is a step towards transitioning many or all features of this site for paid members only.

8. Those of us who are disgusted with this decision are leading the charge for, predicting, and hoping for a mass exodus of users to other free sites with better features and without the condescending attitude from their owners/admins.

Something is weird here, I saw the above post up an hour ago, then it was gone along with mine, now it is back?? Anyway, the IM feature is standard for any dating site, to try and say that it is "not wanted" by the members is really quite a stretch.

What's happening with PoF? It's not what it used to be which was free. Now you have to pay to be a premium or serious user. I thought the owner's motto was to keep it free. I read his profile on Wikipedia and it said that he made $10 million dollars from advertising in 2008. So why can't he keep this site free? Why? Having been a member a long time, I am seriously thinking of leaving for good. Too bad, I really miss the old PoF. It's a sad day

I miss IM
Posted: 4/19/2009 7:41:44 PM
I am very disappoint to see IMing is gone. I miss it already. Surfing the site just isnt the same anymore and the only reason I can see how usage would be up since it was disable is because people have to log on more to see if they have emails. LAME!! live chat is so much better then trying to email people back and forth. ALSO, I am on many other dating sites and always come here because of the free features. The other sites have IM features... PLEASE BRING SOME SORT OF IMing BACK!!!!!!!!!!

No. This is not a good thing. And it's pretty arrogant to just arbitrary decide the site is better without IM. That's just lame and transparent. The free spirit of this site has been destroyed with this shortsighted decision.

The "price went up"??? Exactly how many pazoozas did they want for it? Don't make me laugh.

Come effing on.

Twenty thousand dollars a day in ad revenue and there is no way to get a working chat server for PoF???

What unemployed script kiddie don't you know who wouldn't do it for weed money and a good gaming rig...seriously...what an effing cop out.

Although I never use the IM service, I liked the option of having it there. I keep mine turned off for the most part, mostly because it never worked that well, and because I found it to be a nuisance. But I do hope admin provides us with a new IM that will work properly.
