| IM turns me off. Posted: 4/20/2009 11:49:45 PM | | I don't understand the big deal myself. That IM feature was a joke. Over half the time it didn't work right. Wouldn't open' It froze up all the time. You had to wait for the other person to stop typing before you could start because as soon as they hit send what ever you were typing stopped working. I won't miss it at all. Junk. Now that i know it was a AOL messenger it makes even better sense. Aim messenger is junk to. It doesn't hurt me one bit to go off site to yahoo messenger. Besides' As far as the ads on the POF page goes' I never see the first ad. Ad blocker plus takes care of that. So in other words it's not the 3rd party ads that make me come here. It's the friends i have made so far. Plus i do get dates here. | |

| IM turns me off. Posted: 4/21/2009 2:54:35 AM | I see a massive increase in site use and number of people using the site when there is no IM.
That is what ADMIN wrote which doesn't make sense. People did not use the site because it had IM? And they DO use the site because it DOES NOT HAVE IM? That's totally illogical.
Could it be that IM used too much bandwidth and the server and site hosting fees were too enormous? That would make more sense to me than saying more people use the site when there is no IM.
My other thought is a fear of some sort of legal problems if people were using IM to expose their genitals to unsuspecting people or minors. I could understand if this was the real issue.
Or maybe he got tired of hearing complaints that it didn't work right.
I don't understand the people threatening to leave and being so hostile to the owner of this site when they never paid a dime to use it. It was always free so you got something for nothing so I can't get too mad about anything here. But I will miss userplane a lot because when I had insomnia there was always someone I could talk to.

| IM turns me off. Posted: 4/21/2009 6:12:58 AM | Why are IM's turned off??????? It really turns me off. I'm thinking of deleting this system from my PC . Too bad because it is a good way of chatting to friends and family. I hope that the managers of this site reads these notes and does something to rectify this problem. | |

I would say that is the main reason why the owner is not in a huge hurry to find a new IM.
Chatting with friends and family is not the purpose of this site. Meeting new people and possibility finding a mate is.
People that are serious about this would careless if there is an IM feature, but people that just like to complain do, and if those are the people that are leaving then I say that is a good thing.
If anyone is blaming their lack of success because there is no IM, hey really need to look in the mirror.
Why are IM's turned off??????? p.s. After 351 post's, This is proof that people are to lazy to read.

Chatting with friends and family is not the purpose of this site. Meeting new people and possibility finding a mate is.
I respectfully disagree with the above statement. While outwardly that would appear to be the purpose of the site, in reality it is not. The true purpose of this site is to garner page visits and clicks as this is how revenue is generated for the sites owner.
People meeting and dating is a secondary goal. Yes, Marcus does like to tout the number of "relationships" formed via the site. However, that is just a marketing tool to attract and keep people on the site.
The above is why removing the IM function seems so counter intuitive. The IM feature brings people to the site to chat with each other rather than simply avoiding the site and going to an outside messenger service once you have connected with someone. Encouraging members to go outside of the site actually reduces visits and page views thus reducing revenue.
As previously mentioned by other posters, I do not believe this is a matter of cost. From what I have read and what is posted Userplane is a revenue sharing application that would actually provide POF with revenue. What I do believe is that this is the first step towards a tiered pay for functionality system. I strongly feel that IM will be back but it will be only available to paid members.

| IM turns me off. Posted: 4/21/2009 1:26:59 PM | Oooo look at rule #2 for forums! Ironic. IM on here was clunky and a bit rubbish at times, but it was popular and a good way to keep in touch with friends as well as make new ones. My vote is to replace it with a better one!! | |

| IM turns me off. Posted: 4/21/2009 1:58:41 PM | | POF is going to lose so many people - it may have not been the best but it was very popular. Please bring it back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! | |

| Instant Messenger Has Been Discontinued By 3rd party Vendor Posted: 4/21/2009 1:59:07 PM | Why did they remove the instant message? It was a nice way to connect with someone! Yes I realize they might say people could give their email addresses, but sometimes I feel more comfortable chatting here then to be giving people my email address just to with them. Plus when you send an email to someone who is on line now! They might log off by the time you send them a email! Please consider bringing back!!!!!!

I like the ability to chat with friends 1on1 before exchanging my msn address. Gives me a chance to screen & nuke the idiots before revealing info like my email address, etc.
i do the same, sad to see the IM go :(

| Is IM turned off for good. Posted: 4/21/2009 3:00:47 PM | I guess I joined the site very recently because a friend had spoken to a couple of people who told her how good it was. I'd heard of the site via online reviews a couple of years back, but the reviews had not been that glowing so I'd not bothered. Anyway I joined on a bit of an impulse as I was bored one evening and because it was free. I thought what the heck give it a try.
I didn't realise it had the IM feature until I started receiving lots of IMs everytime I logged on and to tell the truth I found it a really useful feature because had it not been for the IMs I'd probably have lost interest pretty quickly. It's always fun just to chat to people and most people who IMd were fairly nice and easy to chat to. So I guess a large part of the attraction of the site really was the free IM feature and the fact that people could randomly say hello when passing. Since I joined Ive been telling friends how much fun it is on here. I get all sorts of erm..interesting people contacting me to chat and it can be a great laugh. So the site basically sells on personal recommendation.
I think that if the IM feature is not restored the site won't be able to retain a large membership because at the end of the day it's built a rep on being a free site and that's what has drawn people in. The site infrastructure is not as sophisticated as paid sites so the way it differentiated itself was via the IM feature and the flexibility of easy informal contact using a very simple interface.
Based on the above, I will now end up saying to friends, don't bother joining because it's no longer fun & there's not much point. If the plan is to end up with tiered membership, then making it a pay site is basically going to cut it's nose off to spite its face because it will have lost it's main draw. All the sites have a free membership option, but fish was the only one that was supposed to be completely free. Someone else will just come along and fill the gap in the market it will leave behind.

| Is IM turned off for good. Posted: 4/21/2009 3:44:03 PM | I guess everything has already been said on both sides of the argument. But at the end of the day, if you didn't like IM you could simply switch it off.
My take on this, is if you're on a good thing, stick to it, why change a winning formula for whatever reason. Like many others, I preferred to get to know someone with IM rather than email and if it isn't brought back I will look elsewhere for another site. Anybody got any suggestions of sites suitable for Australians? I know there are plenty, but I would like to know where all of you people are going, because I enjoyed PoF so much.

| IM Posted: 4/21/2009 6:56:41 PM | You should bring it back. It was useful in a connection I have made and we are becoming attracted to each other because of IM messenger. The web suite should make the modifications to allow users who favorite each other in a connection to connect using messenger only if both people are connected in Favorites. It's not hard to do. Thanks for when it was available.

| IM turns me off. Posted: 4/21/2009 10:02:32 PM | Margus, Thank you for the best site on the internet. I am really bummed out that you took off the IM it is easy to contact someone without waiting for a day or 2 to get a reply to a email. I feel it is wrong to get rid of a major feature you always had. Please bring it back on the Premium and I will glady pay extra for it. | |

| POF web messenger' Glad it's gone' May it stay gone. Posted: 4/21/2009 11:58:13 PM | I came back over here to read this again and i can't believe how people are actually crying over this feature. A feature that rarely worked right' Was aggravating to use when it did work. I used it a few times. The few times i used it i found it cumbersome and more aggravating than useful. I can't believe that there are actually some on here that are willing to pay for it when yahoo messenger is free. I've met a few nuts over here that i gave my yahoo ID to so they could contact me there. When they got nutty with me i put them on the blocked list there on messenger. This one that POF had couldn't even do that. It was a sorry excuse for a messenger. I'm glad it's gone. If Markus gets another one that works better' That's fine' But as far as the old one it should have been shyt canned a long time ago. One other thing. If Markus does decide to bring back another messenger i hope it at least has some good features. The first one being you can't message someone unless you have some kind of permission from the the person your messaging. Me' I never liked getting IM messages from total strangers that i have never even spoken to the first time. There are to many ill mannered people on here that will just IM you without even a e-mail first to see if your interested in talking to them. They just bust in and put you on the spot. I'm glad it's gone.
Thank you Markus!! | |

| POF web messenger' Glad it's gone' May it stay gone. Posted: 4/22/2009 1:30:04 AM | There are mixed feelings regarding IM but there are many of us who enjoyed using it and personally if it doesn't come back I may look elsewhere,I certainly won't be here as often, those who don't like IM well the answer was simple, you could have disabled it.
I don't like to give out my MSN etc until I have communicated with someone for a while so for me IM function was a main attraction to this site.
