IM turns me off.

Your site still states and I quote, "How Do I Message Other Users? You can use the instant message feature with any other users online for free. To find out who is currently online, click on ‘Online My City’ or ‘Online My State’ (you can only message users that are within 75 miles of you). You can instant message anyone on your favorites list, who is also online at the same time as you – simply click on the ‘instant message’ text." What happened to the help section being both helpful and truthful?

The site is more effective for whom? I loved that feature and it was a much better way to get to know someone than through emails. In IM one gets a more personal, natural feel for someone than through emails.

I hope it returns. Soon.

Banner Announcement for IM Disco Needed!
Posted: 4/22/2009 5:27:55 AM
I don't understand why there isn't a banner on the home page of PoF stating that the IM feature is no longer available.
That would save a lot of emails to "Admin" and posts on the forum.

Then too I think candor is something people who own and/or manage any kind of communications medium are organically incapable of.

I respect Markus' right to turn off the Webmessenger IM feature even if he is (IMO) being disingenuous for the reason which appears to be that in order to support an advert-free PoF for "serious" members either he'd have to pay a lot more for Userplane OR Userplane doesn't offer an advert-free version of its hosted product and Markus doesn't want to spend the money for additional servers, bandwidth and very expensive software licencing (Adobe Macromedia) to have an "internal" IM to replace Userplane.

Also the addition of the pay-for "serious" member feature tells me PoF's revenues have been falling perhaps to an extent Marcus needs to cut some costs in order to keep PoF "on the air"
If that's the real deal it's certainly better that there's no IM rather than no PoF.

If people switch to emails here as a replacement for IM watch for degradation of email performance - already PoF has reduced email retention from 30 to 20 days; I can see email send-quotas on the horizon.

10% increase in active users so far... No way i'm bringing back the IM now... There is a reason no other major dating site has an IM.

I loved IM!!! People don't always respond to email but if you catch them online to IM then I usually have better results starting up a conversation. I love when I am logged in and bored and someone IMs me.

Lady and Princess, You are so "RIGHT" !!! It was a Wonderful site until they keep changing things. IM was the wonderful part that also gave this site the charisma, honor and charm to challenge the liars and players on line... I know they can still be liars and players on IM and they give people like me a bad name that about what I think when I think it from my Heart on my sleeve!!! People like Cowboy who wants to hide behind his computer and and not open up to their true feeling, Men to be afraid of and not caring about anybodys feelings but his or their own :( Maybe there were too many "JERKS" on here they had to delete it... So, JERKS get a Life or go *$#@&*%#$^@* jerk-off in your closet or find some of your own kind. Get Lost

I agree I think the IM should be brought back. Thats was one of the advantages of being on this site versus the other dating websites, that I could talk to someone immediately without giving out my personal information and it was free. Normally you have to pay before you can recieve messages or IM plus I do some of my chatting while working so the IM feature was nice. Sometimes the delay between messages is so long that you think the other party may have lost interest even though both parties are showing "online."

IM is a useless tool for me.

IM is not a useful tool for me at all. When I first got on this site. I did not realize my IM was on. I had windows popping all over the place and I could not handle all the windows. I found the small talks of nonsense are not desirable.

I prefer someone who could/would WRITE a good email, that would prove that he has some brain at least. Since then, I have almost NEVER turned my IM on just to avoid junks or a big waste of my time.

[ Yes it counts for him. But you could of said hey whats your yahoo IM and been done in 10 minutes there rather then a half hour here?]

I'm sorry but I am a little confused, if the object was to have more traffic on this site why would you be suggesting that we use another site's im feature? Maybe it is just me but that seems counterproductive. Yes it is a free site and yes we should be grateful that it is so, but it would seem that as a free site offering a free im feature that would create more traffic.

Ok, some people are for, some against...but those against IM always have the option to opt out/block/etc.

How about looking at a free IM product such as Jabber there are plenty open source/free ones... and since the site doesnt charge for it... will probably comply with the licence agreements etc.

You DID have the option of only allowing those on your fave's list to IM you.

(to the below poster) You did. You had the option of only allowing faves and had the option of clicking 'no' instead of 'yes'. It's a moot point anyway, since there are no options now and not likely to be one any time soon.

you miss the point, it is not that we do not want IM, it is we would like to control who can and who cannot just as we can with email.

Frankly I enjoyed the IM Feature.

I have had a zillion men tell me to meet them at Yahoo, I log in there, they never show.

OH A message on the opening page would have been nice. I haven't used the site in a last couple of days because I figured the IM's were just not working.

Goodbye old friend, sad to see the I/M be taken away but maybe if POF asks for some GOVERNMENT BAILOUT ASSISTANCE they will bring it back. But don't you think it is funny that a man or company can make millions of dollars per year and have the best dating site, bar none, in the world and lose such an important option as Instant Messenger? Oh well, maybe after this the owner of POF can get a job as the CEO at General Motors. I am truly saddened by this.

I should say something is Rotten in Denmark!! As a person that is new to BC and still has a # of friends in Ont., this makes it sooo difficult to see a friend on line and you can't talk to them!! What was the reasoning behind this bright idea!! The whole reason for the site to me is to keep in communication with those you care for and to hopefully meet others.... dah.... now, how are we supposed to converse and see if the person is a prince or a frog. Sounds to me like this is going to become a "pay for use" site.... this is just the prelude!!

POF has it's advertisers too, which should over-ride the cost of IM!! This is what made the site so popular... take it away and you have "are you interested".... hope not.. then the demise of POF!!!
